I've been there twice, and it always amazes me. Right from stepping out of the plane the vacation starts. And it only gets better with every day.

North Island. North of Auckland to the North Cape (East up, West down), and then south to Tongariro, Rotorua, Wanganui(?). It's been over 10 years ago.
On both times I only had three weeks, so I didn't go to the South Island.

Stuck on a 'kin dairy farm just north of Invercargill for the tail end of winter. Toasty warm it was not.

Not, if you take the back-country roads where the speed limit is often 30.

If I want to use a highway for fast driving, I'd probably go to Germany. But that I wouldn't call a vacation.

Well, all I have to do this is book than flight south from Australia :)
But then I don't have any real interest in NZ apart from maybe finding some LOTR props left behind.

Aha, I can sympathise, I've only had 3 decades in NZ so I have not made it down to the South Island either... ;)

If I go down to the coast, I can see the south island on a clear day and I've managed to make the ferry trip a few times. Actually I flew down to dunedin for a week last year.

Only if there's roadworks, which there always is as they tend to start them on backroads and take forever to getting round to finishing them. It's 100 on the open road though.

Aren't the fast roads in NZ all 100km/h? (That's 60 and a bit for people who use real speeds)

EDIT: and post is obsolete. dammit

100km/h isn't exactly fast. Not that anyone sticks to it

Meh, no idea. During the hockey season I make the drive up north to palmy every week or so, and there was one bit of road that had the 30km sign out for about 4 weeks. I think they were resealing.

Well really!

How dare you insinuate we allow flightless birds to set the speed limit on our roads, that is going a bit far. I for one am insulted that you would imply that our speed limits are set by birds.....

....just what the heck did you think all those sheep were for? Wool?! ;)

(For the record the speed limit on the 'open road' is normatively 100kmph.)

Well of course it would be silly, quite apart from the sensible point you raise, having read animal farm, I would never trust kiwis to do any job that might be given to sheep instead. It is a well known fact that kiwis only have 2 legs, where-as sheep normatively have 4... ;)

Or maybe the real philosophy was:

Hooves, wings and clawed feet good.
More than two multi-digited extremities bad

basically if you've got a tail you're safe (what? no marsupials in Orwell's world)

New Zealand is fantastic - I've been there about 6 times in the last 7 years and haven't even made it off the South Island yet.

And there's a bar in Christchurch that serves the best blueberry margaritas in the southern hemisphere.

Yes, the fast roads are fast. But what's the point of taking a fast road, if you want to see something? I'd rather take the gravel roads. And gravel roads become like slippery ice if you go more than 40. That can be fun, if you don't drive on the edge between mountain and ravine. You also meet more people, especially people who have time for a talk - or invite you for a beer for coming from far away.
