Cricket looks slow and boring..

But it can fucking hurt. Twice in 4 days I've been hit in the face by a cricket ball, the first on a game in the weekend where I was wicket keeping and the ball bounced off the top of the stumps and nailed me in the cheek and the second tonight at practice when I played a glorious back foot drive only to have the ball deflect off one of the poles that makes up the frame of the practice nets and hit me in the nose. I now have 2 bruises, swelling and dried blood up my nose. Cricket's awesome.

Excuse me? Are you telling me that orthopterans look slow? They're pretty damn fast. And if you ever, godforbid, say that any insect is...is...boring, then driver ants will come and leave nothing lef to fyour said corpse than the bones. And probably some tendons.

Maybe you should wear a helmet mate, or maybe even catch that ball in those gloves your wearing, or actually hit it with the bat your holding, silly kiwi's :)

Geez mate, anyone would think you've been facing some deliveries from Brett Lee. ;)

Hehe, cricket is brilliant. I got 50 on debut for 2nd 11. Not bad for a 5th Former :)
But yea, cricket balls hurt like fuck. At practise on tuesday mis-timed a pull shot and ball went straight into the ribs.. Damn the pain was amazing.

It deflected off the stumps, and the other one came out of the middle of my bat, deflected off a pole holding up the net and came back at me. I don't ever wear a helmet because niether the pitches nor the nets have any real bounce in them, and the bowlers are all slow anyway.

The one-dayers should be. I'm sorta expecting us to get done in the tests. Oram and Vettori are supposed to be ok for the games, so that's good. NZ without vettori is... not much, although Wiseman (!) took 9-13 in a first class innings the other week.

I tend to agree, havnt heard of Wiseman before I dont, think pretty impressive figures though, Vettori is going to be very important, hows Shane Bond going?

Paul Wiseman is NZ's #2 spinner, and has played a few tests. I think about 75% of them have been on the subcontinent which are spinner friendly. He played in the test against australia at adelaide last year as well, and took a few wickets. Bond is playing club cricket atm, but I think has ruled himself out of a quick comeback and therefore the series. I don't think the NZ test batting lineup will be up to it, although the bowlers might do ok on the seaming NZ wickets.

Thats the one I was there for the first day and a half, I think I was Langers 200 and Lehmanns 50, left just before lunch. This year it will hopefully be more competitive.

why doesnt Vettori wear contacts?

No idea. Apparently his mother has had several ladies come up to her in the supermarket and things saying that because of Daniel, their kid is now happy to wear their glasses.

As far as role models go they could do worse, ie Warne

Or Andre Nel. That just just doesn't know when to shut up. England looked slightly out of sorts in South Africa - not as convincing as against West Indies or New Zealand. Better opposition yes, but improvements need to be made if they are to challenge for the Ashes this summer.

Australia is the weakest it has been for some time at the moment. If it wasnt for the rain we would have lost that game to the West Indies

The Aussie batsmen will make mincemeat out of Hoggard, Harmison and Jones. Giles is on a par with Nathan Hauritz and Flinotff is very hot and cold IMO. McGrath and Warne have never had issues running through English lineups, and when they've been out, Gillespie and MacGill haven't struggled either.

I think the Ashes is safe for another decade :D

Didn't think the Ashes were anyone's in particular.. maybe one of the participating nations' cricket-governing-boards.

I believe it refers to the ashes of english cricket, It was written in an English tabloid after Australia blitzed them, It soon became popular, and I guess it stuck

I see. Well, no one believes the English Tabloids anyway. That includes The Times (no, it's not a compact broadsheet, it's a tabloid).

"The Ashes" are the burnt remains of a set of bails. Probably the result of a combination of copious amounts of beer and the notoriously dry (fire-inducing) Australian summer. But I can't back that up..

7 runs... not exactly blitzed then.

Didn't know that story and can think of other times when England cricket has died a more emphatic death than that. Oh well

Hmm.. didn't old Warney use to play for Hampshire? And they got rid of him for being old, fat and lazy?

"1938: England squared the series at the Oval, and the match belonged to Hutton, who batted for over 11 hours for his record-breaking 364.
The home side notched up a record 903 in the first innings and went on to win by an innings and a massive 579 runs. "

now that's a blitzing!!

They're certainly not at their best, but England's big defeat in Cape Town did come as a shock to me. We can't expect to challenge for the Ashes with performances like that - even on an off day. The Australians are still too good for such mistakes to be made.
