Lag

I was wondering if anyone could help me out with a little advice or problem solver :)

I seem to get a hell of alot of lag when I play multiplayer games such as Counterstrike source and Soldier of fortune 2 online.

I have a high speed broadband connection and a wireless network, but methinks it is the wireless network is causing the problem.

Does anyone know anything about this, or anyway to fix this ?

Thank you in advance :)

Is it just you getting the lag? Because I play Dark Age of Camelot - and that lags like hell sometimes!!

It could be, but surely there would be some explanation to why that is !

It could be the gaming servers...

A wireless network will slow you down a lot, especially with encryption.

First thing to do is make sure that the server your connecting to has a ping/latency of under 150ms. If it's a wireless network, the Windows wireless network thingy should give you an indicator of the signal strength. If it's a 54G network, then the signal should ideally be between -60/0 and -40/0.

Sorry, wait where do I see this.

I have the windows wireless network thingy up, by clicking my the icon on my start bar.

It says the signal is very good, 4/5 bars.

My thoughts exactly .. guess i'll have to install the games on my wired computer.

The wireless really shouldn't be slowing it down. Your broadband connection is what, 1mbit? The LAN is probably operating at about 8mbit, so the limiting factor is your internet connection speed.

I've found that with Source-based games, latency under 50ms is the only way to play lag-free. Preferably if the server has lag of 50ms when nearly full. This usually severely limits your choice of servers, but in all other ways ensures a perfectly smooth game.
