Bah. That's a nice day in January in New England.
Hmm. Haven't really seen anything like that since '98.

How do you people actually survive? :D

Hmm. Never would'a thunk it. NC has some pretty brutal ice storms. The last one sent our power to hades for a week. :(

Yes it is. But just imagine trying to live with that! ICK!

Heh, do you realise that the warmest day of your summer is probably equivalent to a slightly chilly winters day here? :p

Don't be so sure! Where I'm from in Canada is stereotyped this way a lot, people think that because we have cold winters in the Shuswap we must have cold summers too. The fact is we have hotter summers than some tropical locales, being in the rain belt its very humid, and not at all uncommon to have temeratures well into the mid 40C range in the peak summer months. I'm not entirely sure how things are in the east - but I can imagine that it gets pretty hot over there too! :)

You mean here? Yes. There were so many lines down that they called in linesmen from five other States.
If you're refering to the photo, I have no idea; it was taken in Switzerland. I would imagine they're better prepared for that sort of thing.

Yeah, we're used to that kind of weather up here too. I don't know. The picture just doesn't seem like it's all that bad, at least according to what I'm used to.

Well, today is actually a really good temperature. It would be about 20C, I think (too lazy to do conversion). It's overcast now but the sun was out this morning. I hate the extreme heat but you'd probably find our winter pretty comfortable. :)

From what my Sastarad told me, its the duration of heat that makes it impossible to stand the heat in the summer. One large relatively flat surface, that has the capacity to retain a lot of heat = Australia in a nutshell. Your daytime high lasts a lot longer through and into the night - it does still cool off a lot at night here, which is good or bad depending on how you look at it. Some places, like Vancouver, dont have much temperature flux at all - the average summer temp down here is only around 25-30C, and in the winter it doesnt commonly get very far below 5-8C. I miss the Shuswap winters though, I actually quite enjoy it when it gets down around the 10-15C below mark, it creates the perfect riding conditions for snowboarding and sledding. If theres a lot of snow (which except for this year there usually is) you can ride well into April or even May in higher elevations, then come down and go wakeboarding the same day.
For some very strange reason, this year has been quite temperate throughout BC, and snowpacks which need to be built up for alot of Western North American freshwater supply are drastically lower than they need to be. Its been a horrible year for riding as well, at least at this point.
If I'm not mistaken there are a lot of good snow mountains in Victoria, and not even terribly far from Melbourne aren't there? I can't recall, I know that like our summer, your winter is very short. I'm curious though, as to how much snow you might actually see there in an average winter at higher elevation?

Oh, not a whole lot. That area is only a couple of hours in the car away, but i've never been (I will, one day...). New Zealand has it a lot better than we do. Our snowfields generally rely on artificial snow to make them half-decent skiing areas.
And yes, our day is definitely very long...and it won't cool down much at night. During the summer at least, our nights are pretty damn hot (Which is an annoyance...I like cold nights. :()

Yeah, thats kind of what I thought. I like cold nights too, but not when youre on the lake. We go out to Annesty Arm, a remote location, at least once a year for a few days of nice unbothered glass riding. Its always awesome, and super hot during the day, but being on the water it can get damned cold at night -right down from the mid forties to high single digit tempratures! Its not so bad if youre prepared, but the thing is, its hard to tell your body that such a drastic change in temprature is normal! :p

What's the average down there? 15C [59F] or something for winter? I'd die in that... so I can't think of how I'd be in New England.
It was about an about 19C [66F] last winter here in Sydney, which was one of the warmest ever.
It hit 29C [84F] here today

Heh, right now in New England it is 0F, which is -17C. Not sure how cold that is for you, but 0F is getting cold enough that us New Englanders start commenting about how cold it's getting. About -15F is when we start bitching about it being too cold (-26C).

That's about -17C colder than i've ever experienced. I wouldn't be able to handle it.
And Yammo, the average temp is probably a little higher than that.

Every time only reaches about 11-12C (low 50's), it's the top story of the day... that's how we are with the cold...hehe
Kanabia- ah... I thought 15 was a little cold.

Yeah. We're actually not much colder than Sydney. It rains a little more but the temperatures aren't a whole lot different.
