How long do you survive on an American-style appetizer?

Once, when I was in the US, I just ordered that, since I heard about those supersize main dishes. After half of the appetizer I was full.

I'm American, and I like to say I'm a healty weight. My BMI is somewhere between 19 and 21--I haven't checked in a while. I eat plenty, but I do lots of sports.

That's probably because appetizers are meant to be shared by 2 or more people, not just one person.

What he said.

And as an American, I can safely advise that any forgeiner must stay away from apetizers. Even I can't handle sharing one without going full.

Well, I'm a pretty big guy ... 6'4" and weigh 215 lbs. In most American restaurants, I can eat my fill of appetizers and main course and save room for dessert.

granted i live in canada, but have you ever been to italy? man, you want to see people eat a lot, go there. i went on an exchange with school and all the italian exchange students ate so much. of course when we went to italy, we discovered that they walk everywhere, which would explain the trim figures despite so much food.

oh, but when i go to rastaurants, depending on what i order, that's about two to three meals usually.

I hate appetizers. That's why I never order them. I skip and go straight to the meal :)

I probably shouldn't post this since it's true but enviable, but I don't gain weight.
I weigh 165 (5'11") and eat all day. I'd like to gain weight, but can't.

I usually eat the appetizer, main course, dessert, and then everyone else's leftovers in the fridge.

Ditto. And I'm only 6'2" and 230. :D

BTW ... I've decided to try the beard thing again.

Sometimes I go for bigger appetizers, but mostly I just want something to munch on beore the food arrives, so a salad, a bowl of soup, or even some bread works for me. Then after the meal, I usually don't have room for dessert.

Although a few times at Applebee's, I would get together with my fiancee and her mom and eat nothing but appetizers, since they were half price. We ordered five or six appetizers and ate them as a meal. It was dirt cheap and it kicked major ass, since mozzarella sticks and potato skins are good food.

serving sizes (how much food is "customary" to eat at any given meal) in america are 3, and sometimes up to 5 times the amount of a normal (suggested to be healthy) serving size.

That's why America is fat.

I find the problem with appetizers is that they're generally deep fried, completely unhealthy snack food...and if it isn't deep fried, it's too expensive.

Yup. But if you get enough exercise and usually eat only two meals a day ...! :D

I always ate whatever I pleased in college and lost weight because I walked everywhere I went. I am all for eating right, but physical activity seems to me to be more important than diet in terms of keeping a healthy weight. That and not eating right before you go to bed.

Actually, not all appitizers served in the US are massive meals by themselves. Once you get out of the Dennys and Cracker Barrel price range, you find that many appitizers are small and well prepared dishes designed to stimulate the palate.

To find out more about this I recommend the Peninsula Grill in Charleston SC, or Pasquale's Rigoletto in NYC. Either of those places will change your mind about american eating habits.

Of course some people like the all you can eat shrimp at red lobster. Choice that's what the US is about really.

lol yeah...I made my edit in my last reply.

But honestly....we eat more. For example. When Mc'd's set up shop...Adults were completely satisfied with what we now serve CHILDREN. A decent meal back in the day was a happy meal's worth of food....

but we're lazy too....

not eating right before bed....(god I suck at that.) and people wouldn't BELIEVE how fast the weight comes off if they stop the pop intake. seriously. for every pop you drink...drink water...it peels off.

EDIT: not to mention....I used to drink alot. As in...vodka alot. I used to drink away on average, 700 calories a day. Add that onto my normal diet...and holy shit!!! That took up about a third of my intake!!!!! So yeah. all those empty calories..

MMMMMMMMM Is there anything better than all you can eat shrimp??

I love me some all you can eat buffets. I'm one of those people that can eat whatever and pretty much not gain weight. I'm 6'5" and 175. I usually don't get appetizers, but that's because they cost too much usually. But I also almost never have leftovers when I go out to eat. Dessert is my favorite part of the meal-- I'd rather have that than an appetizer. Damn, now I'm hungry again.

I have issues with the food quality at those places though. I value quality over quantity. I did used to like Mrs. Wilkes in Savanah though. That was all you could eat, and it was all good southern comfort food. I haven't been there for a few years though, and I hear Mrs Wilkes died since then.

I'll make a meal out of the appetizer, and the main course comes home with me to make two meals. But thats not good for me as I'm underweight. My appetite has been very poor over the last couple of years.

I stay away from the 'all you can eat' places. I can't see paying $8 to $12 when I won't eat near that much. And yes often the food quality is poor.

I'll gladly pay for top quality food and savor every bite.
