Conformist thinking

Right, now I would like lots of people to explain to one very stupid person how wrong he is. Redy Yellow Flames thinks that if you stand somewhere and watch everyone walking in the same direction, it proves that everyone thinks in the same way. Please help me here, this person is very obstinate and needs a large number of people to patiently explain this to him.

well, as I said in the last thread; even if it's true that because they were all wqlaking that way means that they all think the same, Wally's argument was "EVERYBODY thinks the same", so his argument wouldn't work because you DO get skivers

This person was having an argument with me, saying that everyone thinks the same. Later that day, as we were standing somewhere, he pointed out that most people around us were walking in the same direction, which proved his point. I have been trying very hard since then to show him the error of his logic.

I really don't think it matters whther it's conformist or not.

If there's a bomb in the theatre, and everyone is running for the exits, it's a pretty good example of the benefits of conformity. ;)

People misinterpret nonconformity. Nonconformity is not about avoiding the mainstream. It's about marching to your own drummer regardless of the mainstream's approval.

that bomb scenario isn't conformity, it's instinct

everybody could be walking in the same direction for different reasons. like one person's going somewhere, and another is going somewhere near there, etc

Not necessarily. Nonconformity would be to grab the bomb and run the OTHER way. :D

I didn't mention non-conformity, I merely said the fact everybody would want to avoid certain death isn't an act of conforming, is it? Just because they are all doing it, they're not first saying 'shall we run like hell, or get blown up?'

[QUOTE=Cressland]that bomb scenario isn't conformity, it's instinct[/QUO

That's true, the way to tell if an action is conformist or not is to see if the same action would be taken if all the other people were not there, since, by definition, you cannot be conformist when you are alone. As anyone would run out of a building if there was a bomb in it regardless of whether they were alone or in a crowd, that cannot be a conformist action.

you could be conformist when you're alone in an indirect way, it might not be taking action at the tiem as everyone else, but it certainly is still conformist to listen to some music everybody likes purely because it's popular, regardless of your own opinion of it, for example

Conformity on a grand social scale is mythology.
Counterculture is mythology.

If you guys are in a fucking mall discussing conformity, you're rebel consumers, at best.
As all "alternative" "subcultures" are.

The point is that whether someone runs because everyone else is, or runs regardless of what everyone else does is really irrelevant if everyone is running.

So one can't say that everyone moving in the same direction is conformity or not.

On the other hand, if one goes to class because it's expected of him or if one goes to class because it is advantageous to him is not relevant if everyone is going to class.

No, if you listen to music on you're own then the reason you listen to it is that you're familiar with it and that means you like it more. You may start to listen to a particular style of music to be conformist, but if later you listen to it when alone that is a totally independant desicion on your part.

yes yes, I understabd and agree with the concept, all I'm saying is that wasn't a great example, as it's instinct, thus more primal, yadda yadda

I consider myself a nonconformist. That doesn't mean I'm unable or unwilling to accept the benefits of conformity. It just means that I don't conform to conform.

There's a difference between coincedence and conformity. A large group of people traveling in the same direction subconsciously is not the same as conformity. To be a conformist you must make the decision to be like those around you, the placement of a classroom is an accident, not intentional. :)
