I wasn't the Mod who handled your case, but if your signature was changed, then it was changed by a Moderator.
General advice to everyone: If your signature has been changed and you don't know why, then post in "Moderation" first. Do not change your signature back without asking first as you can be officially warned.

What would happen if there was, like, a fission after a power struggle and they split into two unions, and one was Local 8976 and the other was 8796, but people would forget which one they belonged to, or they where wearing the others tag to spy but then forgot which was which, and they'd be all confused and end up trying to foil things they started and.....
