No, little over a half of the total school was involved in a romantic or sexual relationship...573 in total. Within that 573, it doesn't define who had sex, or who was just in a romantic relationship. Nonetheless, even if they were just sucking face (or other things...sometimes that doesn't get defined as sex by kids) STDs are still an issue.

Which group would that be exactly? If you notice, many of the people in that big chain had only one partner.

nah. hell, being the stoner punk rock kid meant that i got to date a few of the 'popular' girls. but high school relations (social and romantic) don't seem all that mysterious to me. in general, 'popular' kids all date each other, with the occassional foray into other groups for a few of the girls. then you have the smaller cliques. and then there are the people who rarely date anyone or who are in a high school 'long-term' relationship, who can be part of any group.

(i put popular in scare quotes because it always seemed to me that not many of the popular kids actually like each other or are even popular in any real sense, other than by association)

I'm sure they can. However, the chart doesn't say that...only that the girl had three separate partners within 18 months. I see a guy on there with 7 different female partners...would you say "gangbang" in that context?

I was going to make some comment about the graph being misleading... but then it says it was compiled from romantic (sexual?) relations in the period 6 months before the interview...

I look at the one in the top left and think - wft?

sorry, that was sloppy reading on my part. i think we can figure out the approximate numbers from the associated article though.

"Researchers interviewed 832 of the approximately 1,000 students at the school. Students were asked to identify their sexual and romantic partners in the past 18 months from a roster of other students attending their school. (Romantic relationships were ones in which the students named the other as a romantic partner. Non-romantic sexual partners were those in which the participants said they had sexual intercourse, but were not dating).

Slightly more than half of all students reported having sexual intercourse, a rate comparable to the national average. The researchers mapped the network structure of the 573 students involved in a romantic or sexual relationship."

half of 832 is 416. add in the fuzzy "slightly more than half" part, and there are probably about 120-150 of those relations that weren't sexual.

hmm, i think i'm going to go to the university library and find the actual journal article. be interesting to see what they have to say.

I also saw at least 2 groups of fags in the big link ( I guess some guys in the "popular" crowd got their own little secrets eh? im only seeing the les in their own circle. Reevaluate the quarterback at ur school

I wonder if that big cluster is the theater department or the football team.

Our school didn't have that big 'chicks dig the atheletes' thing, so even though that seems natural (They where in the best shape) it always feels like a myth to me. But theater people, they're like bunnies...

Theater == drama? (I'm in Australia, we call a subject drama)

The people who do or have done drama have sex like anything o.O... It's utterly ridiculous - in a good way.
