science disregards the blatantly obvious and more important things to donate their time to studying the blatantly obvious and proving it scientifically, or thats what they are paid to do usually

OMG!!! Obesity has to do with laziness? Well now that we know this, we can help everyone get lean again! Who would've though that fat people dont lose weight when watching tv!
On a serious note, are these people kidding or just extremely stupid.

On a serious note, are these people kidding or just extremely stupid. There's a better article in the NY Times:
http://www.nytimes.com/aponline/national/AP-FIT-Fidgety-Couch-Potatoes.html?oref=login
The point isn't simply that obese people sit down more often. It's that people who fidget - pace around, can't hold still, etc. - tend to stay thinner.
"Researchers at the Mayo Clinic believe it's not the trips to the gym, but the everyday pacing, fidgeting and restlessness that may play a bigger role in whether someone's fat or thin, according to a small study of self-described couch potatoes."
And also, it seems to be a predisposition:
"The activity deficit in the overweight subjects didn't reflect a lack of motivation, Levine said. Instead, he said, it probably indicates a difference in brain chemistry because even when the obese volunteers lost weight, they didn't sit still any less. Conversely, he said, when the lean subjects gained weight, they didn't sit around any more."
So it's actually a more interesting finding than it appears. :)

"In unusual research involving uniquely designed underwear, researchers found that obese people stand or move about much less during waking hours than lean people do, and therefore burn an average 350 fewer calories per day.
Even more intriguing, the study found this tendency to stay seated remained unchanged in the obese people even after they dieted down to a healthy weight. "
ahh, good to see my tax dollars hard at work. i don't know what is most appalling:
1. that this project was funded
2. uniquely designed underwear was needed
3. that this was done at the mayo clinic, #2 hospital in the world
4. or that this actually got published in science
for me, #4, as science is the premier journal to publish scientific work (regardless of area of study), publishing <1% of all submissions.

no, its not. the study is this, even with your addition: people who move around more, stay thinner. please do not tell me you needed a scientific study costing tons of money was needed for that?

I put my computer by my bed in order to keep from having to go to all of the trouble and bother of sitting on my ass. I fidget non-stop and frequently get up to pace around randomly. I drink boatloads of coffee, and that makes me fidget and pace more. I faint at the mere thought of actual excercise. Somehow, I am a skinny little fuck. Yup.
If it's related to brain chemistry, perhaps this could be a big step toward helping people who are unhappy with their weight. A magic pill that actually works, perhaps.

Well, I lost a lot of weight by beeing a couch-potato.
It's really easy. Eat less than what your body burns and you will loose weight...
No need for pills, expensive diet plans, lo-carb shitty stuff.. Eat less than what your body needs.

Its like that great study that was done when people started noticing that French people eat largely unhealthy food but had a low obesity rate. After an extensive study, they found out that they actually eat less. I mean, who would have thought that eating less crappy food makes you less likely to be fat?

There's also been a revolution in new weight-loss diets! It's called the "eat less food you fat idiot!" diet
i freaked out on my gramps because he was pacing around
the next day he called and told me that on the news they said that people that pace around and figit and thinner
fine
Lets hear it for ADHD. Can't sit still, but my butt will never get to big to fit in the chair. Somehow I feel vindicated.
Seriously it is quite legitimate to have a scientific study linking not specifically excercise with thinness but rather fidgetyness with thinness. Now I wonder if moving around while I sleep burns calories too?
