Ok - what do you guys think is the best RPG game ever.

I'll make a poll with the ones which I think are the best. Keep in mind this is for computer games.

Baldurs Gate. NWN doesn't have the same depth...Diablo is an action game, NOT an RPG (I'm on your side Kusarii :D)...Final Fantasy is alright I guess...and haven't played World of Warcraft.

Though the Ultima games from IV to VII (and underworlds) rocked. Ultima VII especially, it was so free-form for it's time (over 10 years old now). I mean, you could even bake bread. Betrayal at Krondor wasn't bad either.

Though I wanna play Daggerfall, Morrowind and Arx Fatalis.

I much preferred baldurs gate 2 to Baldurs Gate, they are among the best RPG's I've played. Unfortunately, returning to it after playing NWN, the graphical niceties make it harder to play than it used to.

Eitherway, I can agree and say that I actually struggled to complete NWN, nearer the end chapters I can remember thinking, jeez this thing STILL isn't over.

Never had that once with BG or BG2, including TotSC and ToB.

Oh yeah, BG2 kicks so much ass over BG1. I had the best character. A Ranger dual wielding the Equalizer sword and Crom Faer. :D

I bought NWN just a month ago, and i'm pretty bored of it. It's basically the same thing over and over again, clear out cave, get gold, sell gold, rescue ugly peasant who doesn't reward you, etc. I'm only up to the end of Chapter 3...Haven't even started on the expansion packs.

I have to say as well that I prefer the graphics of Baldurs Gate- the handdrawn backgrounds are way better than the 3D of NWN, which really feels random and cheapened. Better for customisability I suppose. Though it's cool zooming in on your character and stuff.

Oh yeah...and Nethack, T.O.M.E/Angband and ADOM make my list. If you don't know them, they're freeware, so you have no excuse :p

Hard to say, I dont know of many RPGs that involve f*cking.

World of Warcraft can involve fucking if you meet the right (or wrong) people. ;)

Baldur's Gate is the best on the list in my opinion. In its day it set new standards for a playable D&D universe on the PC. I've played them all and I don't think Diablo is much of an RPG either but it was a fun game nonetheless. I currently play World of Warcraft on a roleplaying server and I absolutely love it although the "roleplaying" is rather sparse. I'm not sure about the fucking, but playing a female Night Elf I get hit on all the time. :D

I agree with Hawklandia. None of those games make even my top 20 list. And I also agree that Diablo 2 isn't an RPG, just a hack and slash... It's still a great game, but it really doesn't qualify as an RPG, and it wasn't even marketed as such.

The tops on my list in no particular order:

Lufia 2: Rise of the Sinistrals (SNES)
Final Fantasy 6 (or 3 for those who never played the REAL FF 3 for NES)
Planescape: Torment (PC, uses the Infinity Engine like Baldur's Gate but is a little more story-driven than BG)

Ooh, I LOVED Planescape: Torment, which I didn't expect to since it looked so much like Baldur's Gate, which I absolutely didn't like. Chrono Trigger is one of the best RPGs ever, but my all time favorite is Star Ocean 2 (PS1). Also, I'm a huge fan of Might and Magic 6-8 (PC).

The FF series is so hard to rate because they vary a lot. 5, 7, and 8 are my favorites, though.

The only FF game I played was 7, it was alright but I wasn't too fussed with it - I don't like the overly turn based style of combat, its "too" stats heavy.

As for planescape, I'm pretty sure that would be top of my list from what I heard about it. Unfortunately it crashed as soon as I entered a building right at the start of the game. A bug I could never get past so...

RPG stands for as you know, role playing game.

Many games give you a roleplaying element via the use of dialogue options or actions the affect the outcome of various parts of the game.

Usually this is pretty simplistic as in, choose between good evil or neutral, some games such as VTM:Bloodlines take roleplaying elements much further.

To me, diablo 2 which is just the repetetive destruction of hordes of creatures and monsters... well.. its just not an RPG...

Forever be cursed the person who first thought that a game with developing characters = RPG

If that's how you view it, then, say, Jagged Alliance series would be much more of a RPG than Diablo

However, and RPG is a roleplaying game, meaning you play a role, get in that role and act accordingly. Beating the living crap out of everything that moves whilst gaining levels for it hardly counts as such

An RPG is an RPG. A hack'n'slash with developing characters is still just a hacn'n'slash with developing characters

Edit: Decided to add here, it's probably a surprise to anyone that adding genuine roleplaying to a computer game and make it still be enjoyable is a very difficult task. Some hardcore roleplayers wouldn't want to give the title 'RPG' even to the likes of Baldur's Gate, which IMHO, is among the games that take it farthest by the means of computer gaming. Still not quite reaching the level of Fallout, though
Roma Moon

i define an rpg as something where the story actually matters. In Diablo, the story exists only as an excuse to allow you to fight the devil. An RPG is a game that if it were written into a book, you wouldn't throw it into the fireplace because it consisted mainly of "Zamuel the Wizard went to Floor X of Dungeon Y and killed numerous skeleton archers. Zamuel the Wizard then teleported back to Town Z to be healed, then continued to the next floor of Dungeon Y and killed skeleton warriors of a different color. Oh, and eventually, he killed some random Lesser Demon on his search for Diablo. But that's not so important."

Like I said, I do like the game. It just has no real relevant story, thus there is no real Role you are assuming. You can call games like Duke Nukem 3d rpgs if you can call Diablo 2 one.

As has been said, I think there is a need for strong dialogue and subplots, etc. As much of a non-linear approach as possible while carrying depth.

Forever be cursed the person who first thought that a game with developing characters = RPG

So in theory both Deus Ex games could be classed as RPGs. They have an interesting storyline, dialogue options, what you do in them affects events during the game and the ending.

If that is the case, I would vote for Deus Ex: Invisible War.

A lot of people do class Deus Ex as an RPG, It was classed as one in pczone, anyway, and I certainly consider it one. As for best RPG, I've just got round the D&D system, which hurt the hell out of me the first time. (Diablo2 does not = skill at a true RPG...) And so the only ones I've played are KOTOR and NWN. NWN beats it, to me.

(I don't believe KOTOR uses a D&D ruleset, I just remembered it at that moment.)

I believe Deus Ex is an FPS/RPG/Adventure game. It's uniqueness is part of what makes it so damn good, but I definitely wouldnt dispute the RPG classification. System Shock is also pretty close, it has strong character development, even though no dialogue to speak of :)

Please note that:

Character Development does not, in fact, equate to "kill mosters get levels, buy new skill."

Character development means the same thing that it does in writing. There is no character development whatsoever at all in games like Diablo.

Also note that:

This is not directed towards everyone.

Yeah it is awesome. It really makes you think too...I remember when I first started playing without savefile copying it was a real eye-opening experience. Once you get better at it and can beat tougher enemies using your wits, the feeling is great :D

As for the horse in BG, I guess it's because you spend a lot of time underground or in urban areas.

Baldurs gate 1 and 2 were excellent games... the areas were so expansive, and there are so many hidden quests that you have to play it several times to get to them all, and each time you play it will be different.

Its unforunate that another good RPG like baldurs hasnt come out lately...

Definitely Dungeons and Dragons 3.5 edition, including the following supplements: Complete Divine, Complete Warrior (minus the Asian classes in both, as those are certifiably stupid to have in the Western fantasy context; if you're doing an Asian campaign, great, but otherwise no Asian classes), Book of Vile Darkness, Book of Exalted Deeds, Fiend Folio and all three Monster Manuals, plus either Draconomicon or Libris Mortis (not both). Definitely no psionics, as psionics can suck my genitals and go back to Sci-Fi where they belong.

DM'd by me, of course.

... oh, OH! You meant shitty computer RPGs. In that case... well... I far prefer Dungeon Siege to Diablo, but neither are really RPGs since there's no... you know... role playing. Morrowind was in depth, but on the boring side. Baldur's Gate was fun, but used the god-awful 2nd edition AD&D rules, rendering it stupid (sorry Gandalf, wizards can't hold swords!). What else have I played all the way through... few of the Final Fantasy games, those were fun, but the ones late in the series started to become formulaic. Chrono Trigger... now that's a CRPG. Good shit. Dragon Warrior... that game was amazingly fun. Not particularly good plot-wise, but so much fun... 1, 4, 5 and 6, anyway. 2, 3 and 7 were balls.

This has been another episode of "the RPG fan insults things he doesn't like." Tune in next time, when he raves about the default Diplomacy rule in 3.5, or how stupid his players are sometimes.

[edit: I forgot about ADOM! Man, that is a good game. So much fun. Major thumbs up from me]

There's really no way that you can compare these games with each other. They all seem to do something different. I think that this poll is inaccurate.

1. When was the game released? You must discard graphics if you are going to make a good judgement call. A game released as a 2D game in the 90s would have no chance against a game in the late 90s early 2000s. Also, I plan to purchase WOW, but I can't make a judgement call on it. It has too soon of a release date.

2. The more entries a game has, the more likely it is to be picked. FF has over 15 entries (not necessarily on the computer, but in general). Baulder's Gate has at least 4, that's including the expansion packs. Neverwinter Nights has 1 followed by a few expansions. That throws of the kilter a bit more. Diablo has 4 (?) 2 games and 2 expansions. World of Warcraft has 1 entry. Etc.

3. Battle preference is also a consideration. Some people prefer the ATB (Active Time Battle) System, others prefer the turn-based system. And some prefer a blend as with Septerra Core. Yes I know its not listed.

4. What do you consider an RPG? Any game that requires you to level up, or place attributes to a character? In that definition Terminator : Redeption was an RPG. Diablo, as it seems to be a consensus, is not an RPG. While I think that it is a lot closer to being an RPG than most others that try to pose as them, for the sake of argument I'll agree.

5. For classification purposes, lets say that any RPG with more than ONE stand alone game is a series. World of Warcraft is not a series. Deus Ex is a series. Baulders Gate (as far as I know, do correct me if I'm wrong) is the only choice out of the poll that offers some degree of fluidity between stand alone games. I would include Neverwinter Nights, but BG is compatible with it to some extent.

6. Game intent is important as well. A great deal of effort went into createing NWN's world creation engine. WOW was created as a presistant online universe. Baulder's Gate was created (primarily) as a single player campaign. Final Fantasy was created to keep monkeys entertained. (I like FF8, and FF7)

In summary, there's not really any comparison between them. One has what another lacks, they're all great games because they fill a void that no other game can or has. As far as worlds go, Septerra Core has the best world ever made. But that's just my opinion.

For the single-player campaign, there's no doubt that Baldur's Gate, and specifically Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn and its expansion Throne of Bhaal are the cream of the crop. I just recently beat it for the fourth time, still doing things totally different. Its amazing. Each time i play, I'm consumed. The depth and story are amazing.

I don't know a lot about playing multiplayer RPGs (go ahead, make your "newbie" jokes), but I would take a guess that NeverWinter Nights is pretty good. After all, you get to build the world from the ground up, right? That's gotta count for something.

It kind of annoys me how these ADVENTURE games these days get called RPGs (role playing games). Real pen & paper RPGs bear little resemblance to a prepackaged adventure game for the PC...the "role playing" seems to be limited to what race and class you chose for your character, and then clicking on the mouse to move him around the countryside/dungeon.

Maybe there is more actual roleplaying in online games where people interact with other humans over the net...

I guess the thread is in reference to a series...so i suppose i would have to choose....M&M...poor choices in the polls, neverwinter nights is perhaps the lamest game i have ever played. if i wanted a linear experience, i would go read a book instead!

Oh yeah! I love Diablo and Dungeon Seige! They are like, sooooo kewl! You can click on things and the character kills them! And it happens again and again and again and again and again...

Ahem, enough sarcasm.

Seriously though, I never encountered any actual role-playing when I play Dungeon Seige, and I'm not even gonna try Diablo, as I have been reliably informed it is no different.

Baldur's gate is best of the selection, but Planescape: Torment kills all else, and like Icewind Dale too.

Fallout 2 = Humor + sci-fi setting + tactics + Interplay goodness
Morrowind = Graphics + interactivity + Bethesda magic
Fallout 2 + Morrowind = Best RPG ever.

The Fallout series was my absolute favorite for years. Then, I bought Morrowind, and discovered what Bethesda could do with an RPG. I'm still in the early part of Morrowind, but I can't wait until Bethesda makes Fallout 3 (http://www.bethsoft.com/news/pressrelease_071204.htm)

Deus Ex was great for a number of reasons, non-lethal weapons among them. Invisible War was superior in terms of interacting with the world, but horribly inferior in terms of the changed user interface and other matters. That's what happens when you try to make the sequel to a PC game on a console. I want my click-and-drop inventory back!
