The last few years I've gotten her a variety of stuff, usually for something we could do together.

This year though, its gonna be the standard flowers and chocolates with a card.

Boycott Valentines Day. It is the least romantic day of the year and runs counter to everything that makes love wonderful.

I don't think this is true...

Valentines Day is as romantic as you and your significant other make it. Do something special together and make it romantic.

What is romantic about another socially sanctioned holiday built around buying things? The giving is predicated upon the expectation that something must be given. This is the day you must buy: 1) flowers, 2) candy, 3) balloons. Love=consumerism.

Crap.

You want to be romantic? Do something for him or her on a day when society isn't telling you that is what you are supposed to do. Be spontaneous. Be unexpected. Be romantic.

Valentines Day is all hype and big expectations that very rarely live up to the promise.

Because I am a romantic I hate this artificial, manufactured "holiday."

yup, its another valentines day alone for me, third year running!! and even if i had someone to buy a present for, its unrealistic to expect anything as i'm flat broke and will be until i win the lottery.

I do do those things, we both do for each other.

On the flipside though, you'd just as soon ban christmas because it's been consumerised throughout the years?

We should give freely all year and boycot that right?

No of course not, we can be generous all year, we can be romantic all year, having a day that gives you an excuse to make that little extra bit special isn't a bad thing in my mind.

It's only really consumerised if you place all of the emphasis on presents and cards and the like. Valentines day to my fiancé and I are about spending time together, and taking the time to go and do some things that we otherwise wouldn't do.

If you need someone to tell it is time to be romantic then go ahead and knock yourself out.

Pshaw.

Last time I had a Valentine's Day sans valentine, I organized a group of my friends and we did a "yankee trader" (everyone brings an inexpensive gift - something fun, interesting, or funny - and the first person chooses and unwraps, then the second person either steals the first person's gift - in which case the first person gets to choose a new one - or chooses a new gift and unwraps it... and so on).

And one year a couple of my friends got together to do an Anti-Valentine's Day... they dressed all in black, went to a couple-un-friendly movie, and rejoiced in their singlehood.
