Internet connection problem

Anyone here can help?
Yesterday I was downloading some files of Shareza (not porn either oddly enough) and one file, instead of being what I wanted, started trying to install and run a whole raft of spyware, webtools, toolbars and other assorted annoying shite.
Luckily I have Giant Antispyware installed. It kicked into action and startedm blocking and deleting these programs.
Unfortunately - and I can only assume it was because so many files were trying to install at once - my internet connection seized up. When I restarted Windows I could no longer get into the internet.
I can connect ok, but it just sits there. I send 200 bytes and receive 231 bytes back. Nearly always those numbers.
I've done a system restore and have re-installed Windows XP (bloody hard work as it's a Chinese version I've got) but I still can't load up any pages. It's not the browser, as neither IE or Firefox work.
I've even uninstalled and then re-installed my Ethernet card, but to no avail. Except when I did it the first time, the connection very slowly sent and received information - after 10 minutes it had received 28kb. But again, when I disconnected and re-connected I got the usual 200/231 bytes sent/recieved.

The only other option I have right now is reformatting the drive and re-installing everything. But I really don't want to do this, as I'll lose all my files (including 2 gig of music I've downloaded).

So, anyone out there with other suggestions?

(And before anyone says it, I'm using work computer at the moment, which is why I can post this).

Is your network card activated? Does your comp have it's proper name? Is the workgroup correct?

Disconnect and reconnect any cables that connect you to the internet.

Modems, DSL, anything you have, reset them.

That saved my own ass a couple of times.

Anti-Virus scan, perhaps?

Yeah. You should treat him to some soda. Just pour it into the cooler opening.

Also, don't be afraid to call your ISP tech support. It may feel like banging your head against the wall for awhile, but they can run dianostics no one here can.

This has happened to some of my friends before, but usually with them it was able to connect again after restting their modem and such and restarting the computer.

I have ISDN and have resetted it. Also virus scanned it too. But it still doesn't work.
But I can always try everything again.
Can't make it worse at any rate.
Thanks for the advice. I'll have to try it when I get home again.
Bloody annoying. I couldn't get into my Darkthrone account for a day and have lost all that money and men!
