Cancelling job interviews

So, I had to delay my first ever job interview because my ride never showed up (Mom was at the hospital with my younger brother, who's recovering from jaw surgery).

So that gets me wondering, have you ever had to delay or cancel an interview for reasons OTHER than getting a job offer from a separate company?

No. It's one of the prime "no-nos." Whenever I use to interview prospective employess for either GE or Exxon, being late or not showing up at all ( regardless of the reason ) was almost always grounds for rejection.

I'd have grabbed a cab, car service, bus or goat cart before missing an interview.

So I'm screwed?

EDIT: Crap! I forgot to say "cancelling OR delay an inteview"

Did they offer an alternate date when you cancelled? I guess how screwed you are depends on the job you're looking for. If you are a standout in your field, call the hiring manager and ask for another appointment. If you aren't that unique, you might be able to get another appointment, but I'd say it's unlikely.

When we schedule interviews, we usually try to get the candidates sequenced one after another. That allows the managers to make a better comparison. If there aren't that many candidates, then it isn't that big of a deal to have someone come in late.

I'm applying for a job at Princeton's (Minnesota) local retail stores, as a stocker. When I cancelled (delayed, rather), I said that I would be able to make it on friday. However, my mom says that "there's a new face there every week," so I'm thinking my chances are pretty slim. Although I did volunteer to stock videos there for a school thing in my senior year at High school.

Yeah, that's not one of those "Jack Welch at GE" kind of fits. Wouldn't hurt to head over to the store and see if they are still interested. The worst thing that could happen is they would ban you for life, but that's not too likely.

When I was looking for summer work in college, I did carpentry work. I spent a lot of time driving from one site to another. Every time I asked if they were hiring and got a negative response, I'd ask, "Do you know anyone who is?". Finally did find a decent job from one of those requests.

Good Luck.

Thanks.

BTW, my ride is on her way home, so, if she's willing to take me, that is, I could still go over to the store today, and see if the manager has enough time for an interview. Or would it be better to wait 'till the scheduled appointment on friday?

I misunderstood. I thought you had cancelled the interview and were trying to reschedule. If you have a firm appointment, keep it. Otherwise, if you want the job, go beg.

I had to reschedule a job interview this past fall because my step-daughter came home and told me she was getting married in two days, the same day as the interview. I called the company and explained that I had to put together a wedding in two days and wouldn't be available for the interview and they rescheduled it for the following week. I still got the job. :)

@Myrmidonisia
I plan to keep friday's appointment. :) (Just hope my mom {my ride} doesn't lose it for she seems to have a short temper. I haven't told her yet :eek: )

@Purple
That's nice to hear! :)
