These remind me of the propaganda methods I learned in school just today.

Why should we let facts and logic ruin a good argument? :)

Logic is a tool of the weak.

I find that statement highly illogical.

The purpose in my linking to the site (and many thanks to my colleagues here on NS for providing additional links to other sites!) was to allow those interested to improve their skills at arguing and supporting an argument rather than resorting to the all-too-familiar "I'm right and you're wrong, and nothing you say will change that because I'm right!" ;)

Theres a lot to learn on that page you've linked. Its really interesting, thanks Katganistan. I must admit I've been known to use the "I'm right and you're wrong, and nothing you say will change that because I'm right!" approach.

Schopenhauer has a great essay called "The Art of Controversy." The basic premise is that logic's fine if you want to know the truth, but you're not going to win any debates with it.

Stephen's Guide to Logical Fallacies:

Nice link. I've got a few like it. Unfortunatley, this one you gave doesn't give the latin names to the fallacies, and I think it's really cool to be able to give the latin names when calling a fallacy. Ad hoc, post hoc ergo prompter hoc, et tu quoque, etc.

Sadly, debating has almost become a waste of time.
No one is going to change their view if they are arguing that its correct.
Thanks to the media, two generations have grown up with their heads full of propaganda from all sides, thus skewing their true beliefs.

that would be a complete failure of education then

in the formative years it is important for people to accept things or they will never learn

in the summative years it is important for people to be able to think critically.

Debate is rarely for the purpose of swaying the other party. The purpose is to sway the undecided audience.

The purpose of debating without an audience is give each bag of wind a chance to yammer on for hours to feel better about themselves. :D

But seriously, in debate club the judges job was not to decide which side's point of view they agree with, but who utilized the best and most complete logical argument to prove their point of view. If only all audiences were as impartial and objective when listening to a debate.
