I like a lot of European Metal, but it's difficult for me to keep track...I have a friend who is OBSESSED with it, and every time I meet him, he's spouting off the names of a half dozen bands I've never heard him mention, and I've never heard of before...

That being said...I love In Flames!!! :)

Try some Arch Enemy. They're from Sweden :D
You'll probably be amazed to find, after listening to them, that their vocalist is a girl.

And then there's Lacuna Coil of Italy....I don't really see them as metal, but most call them that.

Oh, and let's not forget Germany! Of course you've heard Rammstein, but they have lots more...just visit www.herzeleid.com and look around, its a Rammstein site, but it has alot of links to other German bands.

Austria has Stahlhammer..

Enjoy! :)

*Edit* And then there's Britain's Cradle of Filth, but I don't like them.....I like my music to be faily audible....

try getting hold of one of the 'Beauty in Darkness' cd's - there were at least 5 volumes out, last time I checked (don't buy cd's anymore, overpriced) - it's basically a European Metal compilation - some old bands, some new ones, some Goth, some Metal, some Industrial, nice combo. I thought it was pretty good.

Also try http://www.nuclearblast.com

Personally, I favour HIM (Finland, love metal), Apocalyptica (Finland, uhh... no idea what the genre would be -- metal I guess), Nightwish (Finland, gothic), Within Temptation (Holland, used to be gothic rock... now I'm not sure), Elis (Luxembourg, gothic), Womb of Maggots (Greece, nu, with some doom influences), Negura Bunget (Romania, black/doom), Iris (Romania, classic), Burzum (Norway, black), Cradle of Filth (UK, gothic/black), Crematory (Germany, heavy), Darkthrone (Norway, heavy) and Lacrimosa (Germany, gotic). In no particular order :)

Also, if you don't mind crappy samples (hehe), the European metal tracking scene is pretty big (by which I mean, a bunch of really pissed off dudes record samples and write their music on computers). Check out the disks at http://www.trackedaggression.com/ (http://www.trackedaggression.com). I recommend tARANTULa's and CADAVER's songs -- those guys kick so much ass!

Oh, and the best part? All disks are free ;)

Some mentioned above: Opeth is good, just metal.
If you want some evil stuff I would recommend the following:
Amon Amarth(death/black), Dissection(black), Finntroll(can't categorize).
And for all your rock n roll needs: Zebulon(swedish) and Rollerball(australian, but still the shit)

Enjoy:)

Once record companies realised that metal is the way to go, the music exports became a bit one-sided. There are lots of good bands like Tenhi that get less publicity because "louder" stuff sells well. That's a shame, really, since many metal fans who liked HIM and Sonata might find Tenhi cool as well.

I'm guessing it's because a lot of really good bands hail from Finland, all of them metal bands. So, if you tell anyone, "Hey, did you hear about {insert band here}? They're from Finland." they're prone to ask "Oh? Are they a metal band?". *

I'm actually trying to think of a single Finnish non-metal band, but no names come to mind.

* I could be wrong, though. I'm not a Finn, so wtf do I know, right? :)

Correct. The very reason there is so much Finnish metal is that we only get a couple of hours of sunlight a day in winter. In summer, there's so much light that it's difficult to get sleep, so sleep deprivated songwriters work around the clock and pass out from insomnia or booze. In rock festival season, the only way to get some sleep is to drink yourself unconscious. Waking hours spent in various states of hangover produce the unique sound of Scandinavian metal.

Correction, Black Sabbath are the grandfathers of Stoner. Kyuss is the son that they should be especially proud of. :D

I can't get over how good Zebulon are though, especially the song "Funeral Trip". I'm going to have to buy their albums from ebay or something.

Hehe, I guess opinions differ here, Black Sabbath truly began the work but Kyuss would be the band that defined the genre, even if they didn't start it:)
Zebulon are really good, I have three of their albums, they all rock although I think Volume One from 2001 is their best peice.

EDIT: Maybe a stonerrock-thread would be of use? We're getting awfully off topic here;)

Well sure... the great metal does come from the north. And Germany, when they try really hard.

Ever hear Japanese "Metal"? It is a little sad....it can't happen....it simply can't happen.

Sweden produces lots and lots of music, of course some of it is going to be crap. Still, we produce a great deal of music that rocks. I think my favorite group here is Therion.

Other great groups of Europe are Rhapsody and Nightwish, and Within Temptation is pretty good too.

mandartia; it seems a lot of cool ppl originate frae Ohio.
mmm...music.rite now I'm listenin to Technical Ecstacy -name the group to prove how cool u r.
but hav any of u heard of:

Thin Lizzy (who I shall be witnessin on the 5th of Feb.)
UFO
Whitesnake
Tygers of Pan Tang
or even visited and posted on the www.endymion.tk message board?this group are pretty good altho the lead guitarist Marty has a tendancy to spunk over Iron Maiden too much and harbours a silly desire to cover more of their material while the singer Pete needs to grow a mullet and the bassist should be locked up for bein far too liberal with his plucking abilities apparently.4eyed,long haired hippy rocker that he is,he dont seem to realize that his kind are virtually non eggsistant in middle Blingland these days.indeed he is part of a dying race of hirsute beings better left unfed the food of love.

what about some stoner rock like erm, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, or Blob Dylan (Zimmerman)
or some crazy ravin sh!t like Guns n Roses who are just hilarious.incidently Velvet Revolver aint nowhere near as good (as GnR)
and i should be revisin for some russian language tests but dont really care.

hey, dont forget the Zutons who sound remarkably like the Rolling Stones, or Joe Satriani who is a foking awesome guitarist, and then there's ACDC,they're pretty funny altho they r aussie, and what about Gary Moore or the Datsuns -arent they homegrown New Land of Zeal'ers, Interesting Slums?
then there's erm Zed Leppelin who are bluddy amoizin' and then I hav to include www.Intraverse.co.uk(or .com,whichever) -they totally kick ass and piss all over Incubus from on high, and the chili peppers...

but hey,not all o' this is metal becoz I find that i can only listen to that in small doses without larfing.some of it is a bit sh!t you gotta admit.

oh,yeah, listen to Blue Oyster Cult (radio's appear, lol) and Montrose too.

www.endymion.tk -feel free to abuse band members on the massage board as much as you like,Marty could probably defeat you in any argument and together we play the best concoction of metal this side of the 1980s

I also encourage readers to play guitar whenever you get the hopportunity and advocate the burning of the U.S flag just becoz it brings some light relief to our day.hell,I'll even go as far as to say we should start a nukey war with Korea simply becoz democracy needs a red hot pok'er up the arse rite now.

New Zealand has no slums, hence the interest in them, i still cant figure out how a country can have a big population of people unable to afford to eat when the economy is relatively strong.
But its a great place to visit, nice people and lovely scenary. The train ride that goes past my house is rated one of the top 5 in the world

Since nobody mentioned them yet, Blind Guardian from Germany is cool if you like melodic metal.

I especially recommend the songs "Mirror Mirror", "Welcome to Dying", and the entire "Imaginations from the Other Side" album. :)

Also, since it seems no one else has mentioned them, check out Gamma Ray, another awesome German band.

Could very well be. If such is the case, it just goes to prove that North America should butt out, stop making bad metal, and import it from Europe. :p
