do you admire those men (and a few women) who make tons of money playing PROFESSIONAL sports? im not talking olympic athletes im talking about the guys who get massive amount of money for kicking a ball down a field or tossing a ball into a hoop or hitting a ball over a net or hitting a ball into a hole with a stick.

are these guys your heros? why? do you admire them for something more than making big money? what is it?

I admire them (where applicable) for taking an innate talent and honing it into something special, as I do for people in any field. I suppose you could say that it's their commitment which I find truly admirable. Wouldn't go as far as calling them heroes, though.

I admire and respect their talent because i am not athletically inclined at all, so they do things i couldn't. I love sports, but they aren't my heroes, not just for that. Like anyone, they can do heroic things, such as saving someone's life or changing the world, and something like that would make them a hero.

i recognize that it takes both innate talent and hard work to get into professional sports and that IS admirable. its just that the job is so ...... stupid.

The short answer? No. I actually respect olympic athletes far more. When I was younger, I was a "national level" gymnist. I enjoyed the sport so I participated in it and achieved a high standard of preformance.

If I just wanted a lot of money, I would have become a businessman, a banker or a lawyer.

There's a line in the movie Gran Prix where a car owner tells Garner, "There's only 17 people in the world who are good enough to do this."

And so we admire that skill, and watching them test it entertains us. We pay for that entertainment and they get the bucks. It would be great if teachers got that money-imagine the quality of teachers we'd get....

But they get the money they generate. And only they can do it as well as they do.

The admiration you are alluding to, some of them desirve it. Lance Armstrong not only overcame what he did, but has used his success to help people in the same boat. That is admirable.

I admire Lance Armstrong, Youri Djorkaeff and Mia Hamm and a few other pro atheletes, but not for their money.

Money, fame, talent- yes, I envy them. Lance Armstrong- now there's an athlete I can respect, not envy.

Only one, and he's dead.

Ooooh! A guessing game! Do we get to play 20 questions? :)

Let's see ... you said "he", so it's a male athelete.

American sport or international?
Was he an Olympiad?
