The Virus Competition!

I'm running a virus scan on my computer following the virus alert. My current total is about 471. This is still after about 10'000 files, so a lot more to come I fear. How many viruses do you have? Lets see who, if anyone can top my total.

Also worth noting is that in the end my AVG anti-virus thing will heal about three of the 471 viruses.

I've actually never found a virus on my computer. However, my virus scanner is all screwed up. It takes half an hour to scan, comes up with nothing, then when I look at the log it says it only scanned one file...

me: YES! Great job AVG.
3 viruses healed.

Easiest method:
Reformat your hard drive.

Well, reformatting is a last-ditch effort, because it will wipe out all your data. Sometimes it ends up being the only choice, but in your situation it sounds like a really really bad idea.

Firewall + Anti Virus.

400,000 files.

0 virii.

And Norton's squelched the few that appear from time to time.

Heh heh. First ditch effort for me. All the useful files on my computer are in one folder, so I just copy that onto a CD, then make sure that I can find the CDs for all my programs.

For some reason, whenever I download a Windows XP update, it completely screws up my internet access. So, I have to reformat it whenever I absent-mindedly download an update. I guess there's probably some way of uninstalling them, but reformatting is much easier. :)

Also go to the Test Center and under Test on the tool bar make sure that the scanners are actually activated....and what they should do when they encounter a virus...

I *do* have a collection of historic viruses, but they're all safely within passworded zips, in an encrypted archive...

...on a hard drive that I crashed when I accidentally figured out they weren't all historic viruses, and one was a fairly potent WinXP virus that I inadvertantly ran, which proceeded to wipe out windows to the point of being unable to boot.

AVG has reached all new lows.

I've no idea if this is relevant, but while you might call them all 'viruses', and that's the commonly used term, there's a distinction between true Viruses (code/script snippets that insert themselves into compatible files) and Trojans (self-contained executables that do not need to infect 'innocent' files).

It could be that all the items found on your system are the latter, and so your virus scanner cannot 'clean out' the malicious code and 'heal' the good parts. You need to check if there are options to allowed it to (if no 'healing' is practical, because the entire file is the bad guy) delete the files completely, or at least quarantine them. You also need to check it looks at and deals with registry entries and .INI entries.

(To further confuse the matter, there's also a distinction between regular Trojans and Worms and Snakes, but that's another story... :)

OUch!!!! NO NO NO!!!!!

You must always run your updates on a regular basis...the app might pic up that there is a virus there but is not able to clean it as it does not have the latest AV definitions....

You also should run adaware and spybot S&D....and update these on a regular basisi as well!!!

AV & Firewall, It's like wearing a seatbelt and having the brakes checked, Only important when you need them, then you really need them.
Some of the newer AV & Firewall packages also detect spyware, but as both Adaware and Spybot do good fre versions you can skimp here if you want to.

Vonners, I try and update it but it just tells me my internet connection failed:(...something that some examples of Malware does is add in an entry into your 'hosts' file that effectively blocks traffic to common AV Vendor sites...

Check that file ('hosts', no extension, somewhere in or under the C:\WINDOWS directory, or equivalent, according to your particular OS and installation options, frexample mine is "C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC\HOSTS") and see if you have a series of entries that say "127.0.0.1 <various.av.vendor.urls>".

You may or may not have legitimate entries in there, but certainly any one(s) relating to your AV vendor and redirecting to the above IP are superfluous to requirements and causing the connection to fail. Delete such as that, or at least comment them out with a '#' at the start of the line.

(That soundslike your problem, seeing as you appear to be able to connect to here, at least, so if it is the same machine you have an otherwise workable connection. If not, then... well, maybe something else...)

and yeah I checked my hosts file .... and my firewall logs on a regular basis :)

Well, if you're rocking Linux, that explains why you have no viruses, because Linux so happens to rock that way.

With the new batch of worms, you can get viruses simply off accessing webpages, without doing anything yourself.

if you are having trouble with your current antivirus program or *gasp* dont have one (like having promiscuous sex without using condoms!)

go to trend microsystems and run their FREE online housecall antivirus program. excellent program runs the scan, fixes whats fixable then tries to sell you a permanent version (which is not a bad choice of av program)

then GET A GOOD ANTIVIRUS PROGRAM!

and while you are at it, get a firewall. i use the free version of zonealarm from zonelabs. there are others.

Free is good, but for under £30 for AV, why not buy a copy?

I used to have Norton (ok technically i didn't buy it but meh, same program), i changed when it failed to detect a virus which corrupted Windows and forced me to reformat.
I now use AVG and it works brilliantly.

One thing i have noticed - and this may be of interest to other AVG users - is that occationally AVG will pop up with a 'Virus Found' warning, but a scan won't detect anything. If this happens the likelihood is that it's a virus in your System Restore files, and can either be manually deleted by accessing the (hidden) folder (c:/system volume information? something like that) or deleted by deleting all your system restore files.
Far as i'm aware teh virus poses no threat in a resotre file unless the file is restored, but it's bloody annoying for AVG to keep reporting it.

I'd sooner set fire to my computer. System restore has saved my computer more than once. Plus I make money part time by ministering to other peoples computers. Restore is the only thing that works in those "6387 viruses detected" moments. It ranks as the most mythical of beasts: A useful windows product

DrunkenDove - I've never used it in the 3 years i've had an XP computer. People who know how to use a computer shouldn't really have to. Even so, i still keep it running and only delete points if they become infected.

So yeah, perhaps i should have added a disclaimer or soemthing, but personally i have no qualms about deleting them.

Alas, a lot of people on computers don't really know how to use it. Which is good for my finances.

It was the "all" that shocked me. Deleting useless points is great. But I might have to do some serious work if one of my customers told me they were all gone.

AVG anti-virus

There's your problem. It produces about 12 Virii every day around four AM.

I had no problems, downloaded it just because it was recommended. Restart my computers, I get five "Application failed to initialize at (memadress)" messages, and it finds two viruses immediately. No real problems for the rest of the day, shut down monitor and go to sleep... Wake up to find "AVG has located a virus" message (and The Cleaner Active Process Monitor notes several changes in AVG). I close it, both come back about a dozen times. I get the "application failed to initialize" problem every time I restart my computer. After three days of this, I re-activate Symantec. The Virii keep coming, but Symantec finds and deletes them immediately, whereas AVG now says "file does not exist" when I tell it to delete (as they're already gone)/clean/quarantine/show me the file.

A month later, I remove AVG, manually delete all traces, sick Security Task Manager and The Cleaner on it's remains. No problems since.

Edit: By the by- I have three firewalls, 4 trojan/spyware killers, and two anti-virus programs running all at once, plus manually checking with Hijack This whenever I feel like something's off. Almost anything's toast before it touched my comp, even if it originates there. To all hackers- yeah, you could get through, but it'd take you hours, and everything worthwhile's on I2hub anyway. It's nothing but an endurance trial if you like.

It's strange that of the many many AVG users i know you're the only person i've ever heard have this problem. Kinda sugggests it was a problem with your setup?

My Theory, supported by the OP, is merely that the other don't layer their security enough to pick up on it. Notice he had over 450 Virii. If I scanned once a month, at the rate I was gaining them, that's be about right.

Good stuff...

http://auditmypc.com is good as well...

But...

the problem here is that the AVG has not been updating properly

Well, that problem made me download and install AVG just to find out if there was a sollution... AND THERE IS! :D

1 - Go here: http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_updt7.php
2 - Download the differential upgrade (the only one u can use for the free version) to any folder on your pc
3 - Open AVG Control Center
4 - Click on Upgrade Manager
5 - Click on Properties
6 - UNCHECH where it says: Do not ask for upgrade source / OK
7 - Click on Update
8 - Chose to install from a folder instead from the web, search for your folder, blah blah blah, and that should do the trick! :p

They must have some kind of problem with the server when they launch new upgrades, so you can't upgrade with the automatic wizard  ... but u can upgrade using the old fashioned way!

Great! Now i have a new Anti-Virus... :headbang:

Seeing as this thread is still alive, I'd like to report my latest findings. 497 viruses found, and I didn't even let it get to the end of the search!
