Would You Believe This Guy?

This is a hypothetical situation for you to think over.

Imagine that someone came to Earth and announced that in exactly one hundred years, the Sun will go nova and Earth will be destroyed. This person has the technology and the methods to ensure that every person in the world can be safely moved to another, safer planet almost exactly like Earth, and wants to help humanity use this knowledge to save itself.

Could humanity actually band together and move to another planet? Or would we be stuck debating whether this person was legitimate, whether this was the right course of action, or even who should go?

Would he bring verifiable proof with him, or just expect humanity to go on blind faith?

no, they would be locked up in an insane asylum... unless, they had proof of their other-planetness

interesting, is it all or none? if not, i think those in power would stay here whilst everyone else would go for a fresh start on new earth, similar to the euro exodus to america in 1700's. undoubtedly, there would be petty arguing in which one group takes the opposite position of another out of principle (see 2-party politics).

Then they would be imprisoned, studied, and ultimately dissected.

I think sterile people would just stay here and enjoy the rest of their petty lives as rich mofos.

We'd lock him up and any evidense he has will propably be nicked by the US government and everybody will just forget it.

...until we all blow up, of course.

If he was a naked homeless man holding a large sign saying "The End is Near", while raving about something called flying llamas, it might prove that he is a mad prophet, but advanced technology requires a display before I can leap into his ship

I would prudently believe him. As in, I would believe him until he told me the only way for his technology to work would be for me to give him all my money and credit cards and then cut my throat. if said something like that I would...walk away..

If they can know so precisely, they must have irrefutable proof.

I'd ask to see it, check it against what I know, and if it seemed to make sense, heck why not.

No point hanging around this dirt ball forever :P

What if they're not sterile but just don't want kids? What if they're poor sterile people?

Even if there was complete and utter truth to what this guy was saying people would waste their time bitching and arguing. There probably would be some attempt to keep some countries on Earth so their would be no problems on the new planet. But I think I would go and make my own country

Certainly would be a boost for us humans to realise that our differences are insignificant and do what's better for mankind as a whole, not just for our own religion, culture, nation etc.. And although that's what I would hope would happen, it most likely wouldn't and we would kill ourselves fighting so our own group to have the planet to ourselves. Exclusive Intolerance - The true enemy of humanity.
