If you are a volunteer, post who you volunteer for and what you do.
I'm about to become a Volunteer Paramedic for St. John's (http://www.stjohn.org.nz) in Wellington.

I volunteer, but rarely for an organisation. I clean up mmy local area the best I can, and have spent quite a bit of time doing that. It really depresses me just how much people litter...it seems that they have to go out of their way sometimes to do what they do...
Edit: I also volunteer at the Baptist home near my house. Forgot about that.

I'm volunteering - I'm volunteerng my time to answer threads! :D
I've both given to charity, and have received lots of it in the past.
I see it as a sharing thing.
I may have been young when I went, but the responsibility is always there.
I don't see giving on my part as commendable, just returning the favor.

Yes. Volunteered at the childrens hospital.
I plan to be working at a hospital in a couple of years.
May volunteer in the future but that's looking further ahead than I can envision at the moment. Landing a stable job after college is my first concern.

Me, too. Different things, though. Helping with this food-distribution program in our area, helping out at uni with random projects, organizing scouts camps, that kind of stuff :)

I've volunteered to go to Iraq several times, first with the military ( who told me I was too old and had too high a disability rating ), then with several NGOs, and most lately with a subcontractor who trains Iraqui military. Still havene't heard back from that one.
I also volunteered to go to SE Asia to help with the Tsunami disaster, but no one was interested. :(

I volunteer at the local no-kill animal shelter. I used to voluteer at the Baptist hospital. And I just signed up to be an e-activist for the ACLU. Plus I'm a sucker for every animal welfare and enviromental group out there. Just ten bucks here, ten bucks there, but I must have memberships in about twenty different groups. And I have absolutely no ability to turn down the kids selling candy for band or senior trip. SUCKER!
I volunteer with a community distress/suicide line. I teach school kids guitar on the side as well (for free, so yes, it's volunteer work). I volunteer with a national and international advocacy group helping immigrants through the process of immigrating to Canada. I am also involved in a Chiapas solidarity group.

Yes, I do volunteer.
Since I'm a Satanist, I got to help my fellow Satanist. If you want to donate here's the link. http://www.churchofsatan.org/
Since I'm a soldier, I also help the Wounded Warrior Project. I got to help my fellow soldiers. Here's a link to that. http://www.woundedwarriorproject.org/
Since I hate the ACLU I help the TMLC=Thomas More Law Center
Interested in fighting the ACLU? Support the Thomas More Law Center, whose mission is to defend a traditional America. Here's a link. http://www.thomasmore.org/
Since I really hate the ACLU I also help the ADF. The Alliance Defense Fund (ADF) is another organization that fights for traditional values. Here's a link. http://www.alliancedefensefund.org/
And that's about it... And I do volunteer and donate money to all these things.

I volunteer at the local no-kill animal shelter.
The only problem with those is because of the no kill policy, they fill up with unadoptable animals really quickly, thus turning away adoptable animals to kill shelters, so it's counterproductive. The local kill shelters have more adoptions than the no kill shelters for this reason alone.

I will give blood when I'm old enough, and if its possible join the R.N.L.I.

Hence my support of organizations such as Alley Cat Allies and their trap/neuter/release programs. If feral cat colonies are controlled in this manner there is no reason to clog shelters with unadoptable feral cats. Each colony is assigned a volunteer caretaker to provide food. When trapped each animal is neutered, they are given a health check including feline leukemia check. Healthy animals are returned to the colony. Since they are sterilized, the feral colony ceases to grow. It's a humane way to control stray population.

the vet I volunteer at does that.
It's not only the cats, it's the dogs too. Cause they take up more space then the cats, and they more then likely need special care

I didn't know that cats took any effort. I have three, and aside from shoveling cat crap out of the litter box, putting food and water out, and letting them sleep on me whenever I sit down or lay down, it isn't any effort at all.
Dogs, on the other hand, are a lot of work. A lot like having a three-year old that won't take no for an answer.
Bitchkitten
26-01-2005, 11:10
Well, not that any cat I've had took no for an answer.
I tend to do a lot of cat rescues. Take in strays, pay vet bills, find them homes. I feel sorry for stray dogs I see, but I don't have the room to rescue dogs. Besides, my cats would organize a coup if I did.

I have done work before with the elderly, worked in clinics, retirement homes, etc. I really have never worked with the poor, probably for a number of reasons. I'm not setting foot into an inner city unless absolutely necessary, I'm not staying any longer than I have to. Probably the biggest reason though, is that as a Social Darwinist, helping the poor goes contrary to everything I believe in.
People that are poor, are mostly so because of the fact they are quite likely biologically unfit to make it in the real world. Welfare and other such programs just keep alive those who are genetically unfit to live and prosper in our world.
If an animal cannot make it on its own, most other animals will just leave it to its own devices.
Although helping the older folks gives me a rather good feeling since most old folks are of the good generations. They are the types that made America great, and they've earned and deserve our help.
Most poor people are the types that are dragging our country down.
I'm going to be volunteering at a senior center...

Troll, troll, troll, troll.
Actually, that's the argument for leaving disabled people to their own devices. The poor are no less biologically fit to contribute to society than the rich. They just have a much worse starting position.

I volunteer by giving constructive advice. Seriously, I know few people who actually listen to someones problems and then try and offer a viable solution that isn't 'awwww you're over-reacting' or 'awww things will get better'. I'm brutally honest too.
Oh and I gave $1 to the tsunami collection guy outside the warehouse. Everytime I walk past one of those guys (or a busker in town) my loose change tends to end up there.
Right so I don't really do any volunteering then.

How do you manage it?!?! :D :p
