Here's a crazy idea

Can homosexuals have the Oedipus Complex? Or maybe some reversed form?
For people who don't know: Oedipus (in Greek mythology) killed his father to marry his mother.

I can't see why a homosexual would not be able to have the same complex as a heterosexual could have, except I suppose that the genders would be reversed.
Also, there is some anthropological evidence that the Oedipal complex as Freud envisioned it doesn't exist per se. Apparently, the cause of the males harboring aggression towards their fathers isn't jealousy over the mother's affection so much as it is in reaction to the father's traditional role as disciplinarian in many societies.

Exactly! Can they?
Any psychologists on the topic?

Well, no matter how you slice it, murder and incest are both...distasteful, if not 'crazy'. I don't know if the genders or gender preferences involved have any bearing on the degree of distaste, or the degree of craziness, though.

So if the Oedipal complex isn't real, then nobody can have it. If the recent evidence is true, then homosexual males would show the exact same aggression against their fathers as heterosexual males (since the father's role as disciplinarian doesn't change), assuming the "wanting to sleep with your mother/father" part isn't true.
I forgot to mention that the same studies found evidence that another factor in aggressive feelings between father and son is competition to "sleep" with the mother...but not in the dirty way I know you are all thinking. ;) In some of the primitive cultures studied, the women kept their newborn babies in the same bed with them (rather than putting them in a crib) when they both slept, and this, due to taboo, indirectly meant that the father wasn't getting any sweet lovin'. So this would cause more aggressive feelings in the father directed at the child, which would then intensify the child's aggressive feelings towards the father.

In that hypothetical scenario, a woman could potentially kill her mother to marry her father, or perhaps her father to marry her mother. Neither of those instances are part of the myth. As for a serious psychological answer, I have no idea.

Though the theory was couched in the classic story of Oedipus Rex (which was an extreme case and different from the complex in all of the details), the complex itself is not, to my knowledge, so extreme as to lead to murder or incest (unless the person is already a sociopath in other ways, I suppose). In its essence, the complex just describes aggressive feelings towards the father and affectionate feelings towards the mother. So being distasteful or crazy fortunately doesn't have much bearing on the complex itself.
And I agree, both incest and murder are pretty gross.

There probably isn't a homosexual version. I think the complex hinges on that fact that your mother is different to you and your dad. Something like that your mother was once a male, but was mutilated by your father, and so your wanting to be with your mother is do with protecting her from your father.
Blame Freud.
I love Bree's (from Desperate Housewives) comments on Freud and his mum.
In Dr. Goldfine's office, he watches Bree sew the button back onto his jacket.
Dr. Goldfine: "I'm sure Freud would not approve of this."
Bree: "Oh, who cares what he thinks. I took psychology in college. We learned all about Freud. A miserable human being."
Dr. Goldfine: "What makes you say that?"
Bree: "Well, think about it. He grew up in the late 1800s. There were no appliances back then. His mother had to do everything by hand, just backbreaking work from sunup to sundown, not to mention the countless other sacrifices she probably had to make to take care of her family. And what does he do? He grows up and becomes famous, peddling a theory that the problems of most adults can be traced back to something awful their mother has done. She must have felt so betrayed. He saw how hard she worked. He saw what she did for him. Did he even ever think to say thank you? I doubt it."
She finishes up the coat and puts it on him. "There you go."
Dr. Goldfine: "Just so you know, many of Freud's theories have been discredited."
Bree: "Good."

freuds oedipus complex works for a boy wanting to kill his father to possess his mother - but theres more! he also had a theory about a girl wanting to kill her mother to posess her father, he called it the electra complex.
woo hoo go me and my minor in psychology!!!!!

I studied psychology for a year, most of it is insightful and helpful to people who have problems.
On the other hand freud is absolute cock.
the man was as mad as a 1 inch hospital.
his entire theory < oedipus complex > was refined from his case studies. dozens of vienniese housewives and 2 male subjects.
The theory that males wish to sexually possess their mothers and are afraid that their fathers will castrate them comes from these studies.
The 2 male cases.
the 2 males involved were little hans and a certain sigmund freud.
Little hans was a 4 year old kid, presented with an acute fear of horses.
and so the only articulate male to reveal all his problems to the good doctor was himself.
good old uncle sigmund wanted to shag his mother and thought his dad would cut his cock off for it.- good old siggy was MAD AS CATS.
oh, and the whole other sex, you know? all the women,? his other patients?
they had the same thing- but with the addition of 'penis envy'
you see the women WANTED to be men so that they could shag their mothers and be afraid of their father's knife wielding ways.
and this guy's insanity is still taught - with an -ology on the end of it, as a science.
oh , did you know he was a massive Coke-head as well?

Can homosexuals have the Oedipus Complex? Or maybe some reversed form?
For people who don't know: Oedipus (in Greek mythology) killed his father to marry his mother.
Ahh Oedipus...There was a man who really meant it when he sent a "I love you Mum" card on Mother's day.
And dare I say it? The first original Motherfucker.
Anyhow, from what I can remember, the term for a woman having an Oepidus complex is "Electra complex*".
It's pretty banal and frankly silly theory - The idea is that the girl is "envious" of her father's penis and wants to possess it so strongly that she dreams of bearing his children, thus the term "penis-envy". This leads to resentment towards her mother, who the girl believes caused her castration.
However, if you accept that this is a possible situation, it could easily be used for homosexuals as for girls. The boy could become "envious" of his father's penis and wants to possess it. This leads to resentment towards his mother, who the boy believes doesn't deserve it.
*Named after (surprise surprise) Electra, who was the daughter of Agamemnon and Clytemnestra who wanted her brother to avenge their father's death by killing their mother.
You Forgot Poland
24-01-2005, 16:13
Electra complex would be right in terms of the players (killing mom to get with dad), but wrong in every other regard. I don't mean "wrong" wrong (what's wrong with a little gay incestuous erotocide?), just inaccurate. Freud's read on the Electra thing is grounded in penis envy, which wouldn't apply to the son.
I suggest that we call this new complex "Springer Syndrome, variant 225c."
