New terms and phrases? "Owned?"

I keep seeing a number of words and phrases used online with which I am only familiar by context. Anyone want to venture a definition of, for example:

* Owned

" Pwned

" Teh

There are others. Got any other examples for me?

"owned" may one day find its new senses in the OED (i believe it will and should) as the use to denote "domination of" stands to reason.

"pwned" and "teh" are contemptable idiocy and nothing else.

Hmm. I've seen "teh" used for things where a "the" wouldn't work, for example "I am teh handsome."

And what does "owned" actually mean? Surely it doesn't mean that you actually own someone, as in: "FOX News reporter gets owned."

They are stupid terms used by "Techno-Nerds" to make up for the fact that they lack a meaningful life!

I'll venture a definition of 'owned', which I read in a newspaper article about netspeek. According to the article, 'own' is a verb meaning 'to defeat', thus making 'owned' a noun meaning 'defeated'.

Sometimes people who write like idiots and dont understand english correctly use "the" where it doesnt belong before adjectives. "The gay" "The awesome" and whatnot.

This degenerated (as the actions of degenerates often do!) into "teh" which is a common typo of "the."

The provenance of owned is unclear, though I have observed it used (and used it myself) in online games for quite a few years.

It generally means "dominated" or "destroyed" or "completely annihilated" and sometimes carries a shade of meaning which is along the lines of "shamed."

Thats my Amateur Philologist two cents.

No, they are used by people who think they are. I am a "Techno-nerd", as you put it, but feel no need to use 1337 or AIM-speak, and the same goes for many of my friends. If I say "teh", it is because of a typo, really. pwned probably came form a typo spelling owned, actually.

"Pwned" supposedly developed out of a common typo because of finger placement during gameplay on a QWERTY keyboard. Or so says the Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pwn)

I see more sarcastic use of it lately, as a general pwnage of script kiddies and the like.

A variant of "definite article," specifically reserved for cases where "uber" should be included.

Tjord- Oy Gevalt

zaftig- methorexic

Neocons- Jewish

Rich- Jewish

Theoretical physics- Jewish

Terrorist- Spanish Peanuts

Yes, I actually have seen someone argue that "theoretical physics" was a liberal code-word for Jewish.

There was an arguement about whether or not "neocon" did, someone argued "just because it's applied to a few Jews doesn't mean that, in every case, it always means Jewish. There are Jewish physicists, does that mean "Physics" are a synonym for Jewish?" Rather than admit he might have been wrong in a few cases, he made a very impressive arguement, with multiple cites, mention of the persecution many great scientists faced from the Nazis, and quite a bit of head-spinning doublespeak.

Of course, his explanation for everything was "you're persecuting me."

'own', and 'pwn' usually have a much stronger connotation than just 'to defeat' - if you 'pwn someone' your victory is so thorough that you've demonstrated your complete and utter dominance over him in the realm of whetever game you're playing. At least that's the idea I think.

Actually, the funny thing about 'pwn' and 'teh' is that both came into (relatively) common usage because people liked to make fun of the idiots who would write these things by mistake.

Of course, now it's almost impossible to tell the real idiots apart from the fake idiots, anyway.

Teh, I believe, isn't a misspelling of the, but instead is generally used as a adverb modifying an adjective, increasing the power of adjective (ie I am teh leet, you are teh ghey) etc...

I think.

I think 'teh' IS originally a mispelling of 'the'. By saying "I am the leet", you are saying that you so completely epitomize leetness that you represent the entirety of leetness not just a specific instance of it. It's like the difference between saying "I am a ninja" and "I am the ninja". Then the typo took hold...

I will attempt to define them to the best of my extremely amateuish lexicographic capabilities. And, by the by, what you wanted to say was "Neologisms".

own (ōn) vt., vi. owned, own'ing [slang] 1. to utterly defeat or destroy 2. to dominate --own'age n.

pwn (pōn, pūn) variant of OWN, typically connoting a more casual and less intense circumstance

teh (te) adj., definite article [slang] 1. varient of THE 2. denoting the greatest or foremost in a subject, action, or quality; typically self-referencial

Pwned is USUALLY more intense than own. For instance killing one guy while getting shot three times in a game is owning. Killing three guys while not getting shot is pwnage. More intense.

Perhaps I have to add it as just a variant of own, since I have heard it used the other way. That's the problem with colloquialisms. Also, I realised that I forgot to include 0wn as a potential alternate spelling...

* Owned"0wn" (is properly spelled with a zero, but some think that this rule is stupid and ignore it) goes as synonymous with "excel above the rest" or "defeat all competition."

" PwnedCute mispelling of "0wned."

" TehA cute or mocking mispelling of "the" or a slang word for "the epitome of" or "the highest extent of" such as in "I am teh cool."

Come to think of it, I think that the popularity of "teh" may well trace back to a website called somethingawful.com and its "jeff k" or "jeffy k" or something like that section.

Old distant memory, so I may be mistaken.

I'm pretty sure this just mocked the already common usage in online gaming, but its still funny on its own.

Perhaps this is a bit telling, but I always believed that the growth of the word "Owned" came from prison culture.

As one "Owns" their bitch, they utterly and totally demean and dominate them. The total subjagation of the induvidual to one who is physically and socially stronger within the prison. The sentance would be, "Shut up Bitch; I own you."

To fall into this status, to be "Owned" thus came out of that enviornment. From where it went from there, I cannot say for certain, but I remember seeing it in the mid to late 90's in its early forms occuring in amateur basketball games. This was before it made the transition to competitive online games, and later general use.

I'm sure you've read enough definitions of these terms, I haven't been a part of the boards for awhile but if you don't mind me asking how old are you?

I'm just wondering, because I remember my professor in Linguistics talking about how each generation comes up with different words or different meaning for words, meanwhile previous generations can't comprehend or keep up with the changes and instead of trying to understand they turn into grammar fundamentalists. And if you do belong in that said generation, I'm glad you decided to inquire about it rather than bash "them young 'uns" :)
