Who?

Oh, an American celebrity no one else cares about...
Corneliu

He was well liked and was on top for like 3 decades.

He retired in 1992 after 30 years of being on the air.

Who?

Oh, an American celebrity no one else cares about...

Actually, everyone liked him. He did alittle bit of everything and many comedians owe their start to him. He launched alot of careers.

The country just lost a great person.

Surprise, but he wasn't known anywhere else (except maybe Canada).

I should start a thread about dead local Ivorian celebrities.
Corneliu

I wouldn't know about that.

I don't know how wide the tonight show was broadcasted so I won't comment on it.

However, he will be sorely missed by those that have watched him and by those that know him personally.

You don't know him because he retired 12 years ago. He is better than Conan, Leno, or Letterman ever will be. It's a sad day to lose the king of late night.

why comment on something when you have no clue about it??

Johhny Carson was 79. every one dies some day. also, since he has made no virtually no public appearances in 10 years, i would have to say, it isnt so sad- his body of work was already a legacy in itself. he could have died the day after he stopped making daily contributions to nighttime TV-

Listen, Fass, this is a thread for Americans to recognize a beloved variety show host. If you want to be bitter, go be bitter somewhere else you punk.

I still miss the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, even after its been gone for 13 years. He was always so warm and relaxing to watch, a true comfort, and for much of my life beloved by an entire country.

He made us laugh, even in bad times, and for that he, like Bob Hope, was a national treasure.

Good bye Johnny, we will miss you.
Fass

I do watch some TV. Now, how would that entail that I should know something about some dead, local celebrity?
Fass

Oh, so that's what he did. Seems even more irrelevant.

If you want to be bitter, go be bitter somewhere else you punk.

And I suggest you take your insolent ad hominems somewhere else.

(Holds envelope to forehead) "Goodyear, Bonzo and Bush." (Opens envelope) "Name a Blimp, a Chimp, and a Wimp."

That was the most memorable line from Carson.

Exactly. Why honour a celebrity no one outside North America's ever heard of?

unless you watched American television during a 30 year period beginning in the 1960s until the man retired in the 1990s of course you wouldn't know him.

then again, no one asked you to add your remarkable wit to the discussion either.

simply put, Johnny Carson was a beloved entertainer who made tens of millions laugh for 30 years

if you don't know he who is, or never saw him perform, then I am sorry that you missed out.

Oh, so it's flamebaiting to not know who a local celebrity is and wonder why his death matters?

He was famous in France and most of Western Europe since that's where he vacationed. Anyone who has ever enjoyed late night TV knows who Carson is. He actually saved Bill Clinton's career in 1988 after he ****ed up at the convention when he introduced Dukakis. I never liked Clinton, but you have to hand it to Carson. Clinton's appearance saved him.

Carson also had a role in creating SNL. He told NBC in 1974 that he didn't want them to run his reruns during Saturday night and to make a new show. That show is SNL and it is still on today launching careers of Bill Murray, Chevy Chase, Eddie Murphy, Chris Farley, Chris Rock, Dan Aykroyd, Jon Belushi, Martin Short, Billy Crystal, Will Ferrell, Mike Meyers, and many more

I enjoy late night TV. Oh, not American late night TV.

To sum it up: Some local American celebrity died. Nothing important. Nothing worth while.

Seeing as most people on NationStates are from North America, I believe it's pretty relevant.

They are? Well, maybe a thread about the death of the Mexican bumblebee man would be in order. Or some Canadian talk show host from Alberta or something...

The majority of attempts to find out the nationality show that about 60% of the people in NS are Americans.

Meh, slow news day in anglophone countries, apparently. Still, a run of the mill obituary about the quasi-known.

A lot of pissed off Europeans taking their hate on innocent people on NS as usual I see. Why come in here and flame. Go bitch in another thread. Who cares if you never heard or saw of him, that just makes me feel more sorry for you pathetic fools. Learn some individual respect.

Carson was a good man beloved by millions. RIP. One of the funniest men that ever lived.

Here in the US he was THE benchmark against who all other late night show hosts are tried - and none have equalled him, much less surpassed him.

He will be greatly missed...

Eternity....

"Heeeeeeeeerrreee's JOHNNNYY!!"

This may be a primarily American interest thread, but he reached out to millions for over 30 years.
