I think that forums are a great place to discuss such things, since you are pretty much anonomous here and need not fear being ostracized. The thread about diversity of topics got me thinking. I'm sure it's been done many times before, but hopefully not lately.

My fear?
Being alone forever. It's bad enough being alone for a short time.
I've had enough experience with that.

Wow, do I have enough neurosis kicking around in my head or what?

I think of a couple of methods used by the Soviet Union as the worst...One, being pushed into a box so constricting that you pass out & regain consciousness (sic) over & over. The other is electricution via the gonads...no one wants that!

wait, I don't get the box one--so they stuff you into a box too tiny for you to breathe? If that's so, how do you regain consciousness?

Sorry, this is probably horribly obvious, but it's too late.

One time I ate 9 gelcaps, I was so freaked out. I was actually forgetting that I was a person. I could not tell if my eyes were open or closed and I had no body. It was a really horrifying experience. Eventually after about 5 hours of straining to remain human (cant really explain it better) I was able to get up and I just kept kicking this rubber ball back and forth to my brother, I think the action of kicking the ball gave me a physical link mind to body. I felt like If I let my mind drift away it would never come back, quite a self imposed struggle, it seemed like life or death. Anyway that was one of my most horrific moments in life. By the way I do not use or condone drugs anymore.

I had this recurring dream where I would be told the world is going to end in 5 seconds, and that I could do nothing about it, and then I would wake up. Very freaky stuff.

Then, when my son was in the hospitol just after his birth, and I was going on like 4 days with only like 2 hours of sleep, and nothing to eat except for some food from the vending machine, I had a dream where some how he got trapped inside me. Couldn't explain it and I freaked out and the nurse made me sit down, checked my blood pressure, and made me do a drug test to make sure I hadn't done some drugs

Then, the other night after being on the computer WAY too late, I had a dream where I erased myself from history and was waiting to disappear.

So I guess what my biggest fear is, my subconscious playing pranks on me.

What is your deepest darkest fear? That religious fundamentalism rises even further. And in fact christian fundamentalism (veiled in benevolence) scares me far more than any other. When I read how even in this forum extreme christians are propagating their medieval views I get a headache. My personal hatred is that of stupid and uneducated people, and christians trying to live off the Bible while they do not really understand a single word of it are the prototype for stupidity.

----------------------------------------------

Hmm. I don't fear death per se. Inevitable. If I would die, I wouldn't be scared, rather more regret, that I didn't live my life to the fullest.

I think my deepest darkest fear is watching my loved ones die, especially right in front of my eyes, tragicly.

A close friend had witnessed such a event, he was driving a car full of friends, and the other car in front of him with another car full of friends was suddenly mowed down by a drunk driver driving a trailer. In a split second, he lost 4 friends.

I'm afraid of the dark. Especially when I go to sleep. I have the weird habit of reading H.P. Lovecraft at bedtime wich often has such a profound effect on me that I'm afraid of seeing my bedroom so I either turn my face towards the wall or try as I can to keep my eyes shut.
I also get the unnerving feeling that there is "something" under my bed, which sucks if I need to go to the bathroom or when I get thirsty. It's also kind of embarasing considering I'm twenty years old.
I think this fear began after seeing an X-Files eppisodes where Mulder and Scully were chaising some invisible monsters. In the end Scully went into a room to get something and then got back out without anything else happening. Then the camera went under the bed revealing one of the creatures under it. It freaked me out. Does anybody know which episode it was?

Why is death scary? Upon your death, one of two things will happen to you.

You exist.. or
You cease to exist

If you exist, you exist wihtout a physical body or physical senses so there is nothing to truly fear.

If you don't exist, then you wont be around to feel anything or even contemplate not feeling anything.

In addition, those who believe that they dont exist after death place far more value upon life than those who believe that some part of them goes on after death.

"Our greatest fear is not that we are inadequate, but that we are powerful beyond measure.

It is our light, not our darkness, that frightens us.
We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, handsome, talented and fabulous?

Actually, who are you not to be?
You are a child of God.
Your playing small does not serve the world.
There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you.
We were born to make manifest the glory of God within us.
It is not just in some; it is in everyone.

And, as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.

As we are liberated from our fear, our presence automatically liberates others."

Oh Lord... where to begin...

I. there being a shambling semi-humanoid being under my bed. Feeling it thumping against the bottom of the bed as it tries to crawl out from under it, then seeing it's long, skinless fingers scrabbling at the wooden edges. And then jumping out of bed and running to the door of my room, and turning around to see it coming out - all pale and skeletal with empty, bloody eyesockets and fang-ed grin. Oh yes, and running into my parents room and finding another shambling being gorging itself on their blood.

II. Blood dripping on my forehead in the dark. Not like, *lots* of blood. Just individual drops. And then, once I get the light on, there not being any source of the blood. *shudders*. Or a spider lowering itself onto my forehead in the dark.

III. something appearing when I blink my eyes. One of the worst is a body hanging from the light fixture in my room. If I think about *that* before I go to sleep, I can practically hear the rope creaking in the darkness. If I keep my eyes shut for any length of time longer than a blink, my heart rate goes up and I get all adrenalin-y. Some of the other 'mysteriously appearing things' include severed heads and eviscerated bodies.

IV. Some psycho with a very very large knife pushing open the window next to my bed and trying to climb into my room in the wee hours of the morning.

V. Fire.

And these are just the things I came up with while freaking myself out last night. Given a few more nights I could probably think up enough things to ensure my inability to sleep ever again.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm off to nail my windows shut and buy a large, large amount of coffee beans.

I can honestly say that I'm not afraid of too many things, but there are a couple really big ones that I can mention.

i. My greatest fear is that of losing the love of my life, I found her, and I'll never let her go

ii. Suffocation by any means. Be it by smothering, drowning, or simple lack of oxygen in the air I happen to be breathing, suffocation scares me a lot

iii. Panic. Namely this is the cause of my claustrophobia, I don't fear small spaces really, I fear people around me panicing in small spaces

As for phobias, I have a couple, but I don't list them as fears because I can get past them, they just cause me a quick burst of anxiety that I find uncomfortable.

i. Snakes - They creep me out a little, but I've been known to snake-sit for people, something about having no discernable body parts just gets me in the gut.

ii. Heights - I get vertigo really easily. I'll climb ladders and get up on roofs, but I better not be able to see the ground at all.

That's about it. Now I feel really exposed because I just gave away ALL my weaknesses. DAMN!

Nope, I just stayed up until 6am (so that I didn't have to go to sleep in the dark).

And, for the record, it was 80 hours, and had more to do with the huge amount of art stuff I was trying to get done, rather than random night terrors.

Dark places, heights, and being alone.
I sleep with the lights on, and I won't go into movie theaters unless there is people in them. In fact I won't go into any building unless someone else is in there too. And heights make me feel like I'm going to fall. I always lose my balance. And the only way I can sleep with the lights off, is if someone is in the same room as me.

Yes i remember the episode not the name but i heared there will be a new movie.

Oooooh, the claustrophobia person reminded me of one of the night terrors I was forgetting!

Being kidnapped, placed in a room with someone I really care about tied to a chair. And then being given 3 hours to shoot and kill them or we both get locked in and will starve to death. And then I'd naturally take the bullet out of the gun and destroy it, being the weak fool that I am. And then the time runs out, the lights go out and we're just left there.

And then eventually they go insane and start trying to eat me due to... insanity. And hunger, I guess (there'd be water in the room to ensure we survive to this point).

And so then I'd be stuck in the dark with a crazy person throwing themselves against the chains binding them to their chair. And knowing that if they get out they'd kill me. So I'd have to find the gun and then kill them with that - no bullet, of course, so I'd just have to use it as a good old blunt weapon.

And having to kill someone I care about would drive me insane, so I'd probably end up eating them and then dying of starvation.

What FUN things my sub-conscious comes up with. I really must remember to send it a thank-you bomb.

Sorry about the random tense shifts... I went to sleep at 6am, because of all the terror and the waiting-until-sunrise-to-sleep and all. Spelling errors are due to spellcheck.net being an BASTARD and refusing to work. Rrrrr.

I'm always afraid someone I love or myself is gong to be killed in a car accident. Freaks me out if someone is 5 seconds late cause then my imagination kicks into overdrive.

Also that someone is going to break in my house and stab me like 47 times. I'm a light sleeper which sometimes means no sleep at all. I hear every noise in the house. I open my eyes and look at the bedroom door probably 1000 times before actually dozing off, in case I see someone in a ski mask heading toward my bed. I think I watch the evening news too much.

The second one doesn't bother me, since I know it would either be very quick for me, or they would be the ones to die. But the first one is kinda like me worrying about my family a bit, especially when they're late and there's been a snow or ice storm, or I've heard an ambulance.

You must have inherited this from me! ;)

I'd rather burn in the fiery pits of hell for all eternity than cease to exist. Bad thing I'm an atheist, eh? Lol. I don't know, just not existing really really scares me. It's like it would not only cause me to stop living but to undo my entire life. No memories, no feelings, nothign. It makes everything feel worthless.

My biggest fear? That the people I love will die. It’s fairly unlikely that I’ll ever be buried alive, or that a shadow person will appear from my closet, or that I’ll ever be abducted by aliens...by my family dying isn’t just likely, it’s inevitable. I KNOW that they are going to die one day, and to me that makes it far scarier than anything that my imagination could come up with.

My greatest fear is another world war.It looks like it's closer and closer.A war with unconventional rules where we wold fight against fanatic terrorists that don't give a damn about life.Bombings and stuff like that happening on a weekly basis or even more often is realy scary to me.Imagine everything you know standing in rubble with collapsed buildings all around the place, all around the world.

I'm also a little scared of heights.Strange thing cause I love flying.I only fear heights in open places(moutin peeks, building tops).I get a sick feeling of the gorund collapsing under my feet. When I'm flying it's a different feeling.Beeing straped in that seat with another pilot that is actually flying the aircraft(by the way, I'm 15 so I can't actually fly it) makes me feel a lot safer in the enclosed, almoast claustrophobic cockpit. It's also great seeing your city from above in the sturdy old Antonov-2 biplanes they fly here(EU, Romania, Constantza).

But if she dosent she knows that the Partisans would make more of a mess of her body than the Germans would so she paints and dies as a Martyr nice aye.

And another one there was an American born Greek in Greece who got off side with the Partisans so they put her in a bag with a starving cat and hang it in a tree.

My fear is of something most likely going to happen if we don't do something in the next ten years. A die off. I'm basically afraid of us running out of power in the entire world and die off slowly because of the utter dependancy on technology. Most people can't catch their own food and millions of people competing while in a mass hysteria state, the odds aren't good for most of the population.

And of course the usual paranoia about bald men wearing suits who take pet goats for walkies.

May I seriously suggest you take some survival courses or read some books on survival to help ease your fears. There is nothing like sitting in front of a campfire in the wilderness to ease those fears. Also learning how to identify edible vegetation and how to use a gun or bow and arrow for hunting will insure you won't starve. Learning to fish is also good.

No need to fear the shut down of technology if you are willing to learn the basics of survival. Enjoy life.
