Greeks defend ancient nudes
From correspondents in Athens
January 19, 2005

US viewers' complaints that the Athens Olympics opening ceremony featured lewd nudity have infuriated 2004 Games chief Gianna Angelopoulos.

She has warned American regulators to back off from policing ancient Greek culture.
Ms Angelopoulos warned the Federal Communications Commission watchdog, sensitive after a deluge of outrage when singer Janet Jackson's breast was exposed at a Super Bowl game, not to punish NBC television, which aired the Games.

Male nudity, a woman's breast and simulated sex were the subjects of complaints about the opening ceremony on August 13 which were posted on the FCC website.

"Far from being indecent, the opening ceremonies were beautiful, enlightening, uplifting and enjoyable," Ms Angelopoulos wrote in a weekend commentary in the titled "Since When is Greece's Culture Obscene?"

"Greece does not wish to be drawn into an American culture war. Yet that is exactly what is happening," she said.

Complaints focused on a parade of actors portraying naked statues.

Among them were the satyr and the nude male statues, kouroi, both emblems of ancient Greece's golden age.

An FCC spokesman was not immediately available for comment yesterday.

Created by modern Greek dancer Dimitris Papaioannou, the opening ceremony was credited with giving the Games a successful start.

The FCC, whose authority only extends to US media, has said it is looking into complaints, nine of which were listed on its website, but it was not clear whether a formal investigation would be launched.

Ms Angelopoulos, who said the handful of American complaints were dwarfed by the 3.9 billion people who watched the opening ceremony.

"As Americans surely are aware, there is great hostility in the world today to cultural domination in which a single value system created elsewhere diminishes and degrades local cultures," she said in her commentary.

"In this context, it is astonishingly unwise for an agency of the US government to engage in an investigation that could label a presentation of the Greek origins of civilisation as unfit for television viewing."

Amazing, 9 prudes with an internet connection may get 2000 years of culture banned from American TV  . Poor Americans, there is always one (or nine).

Because that's what our government is for!
It keeps us "safe"... Or something.

Why did Europe get the normal people and America get the religious prudes during early colonization? What kind of wretched person would be offended by an art museum? If the FCC takes any action whatsoever against American broadcasters then I completely disown my government.

There have been cases in Texas of fundamenatlist Christians converting to fundamentalist Islam because they feel it allows them to be more fundamentalist then they already are. I doubt it's widespread though.

On behalf of this American,

I for one ENJOYED the opening ceremonies. It gave me new insight into the Greek Culture that I didn't have before and seeing the culture displayed proudly shows us that we ought to take pride in our culture.

These nine people need to get a life. Its the Greek Culture back in the days of Ancient Greece. I think these people need to research Greece more before stating something stupid.

I'm embarresed to be American! We're all such prudes it's damn unbelievable! And you know what else? I visited the Getty museum- renowned as one of the best collections of ancient art in the world -and for some reason all the male statue's penises had gone missing, and the female statue's seemed to be missing their vulva. I know that the ancient sculptors didn't usually put overly much detail on the female genitals, but damnit, I doubt they completely ignored them.

Yes, but it's one thing to speak your mind and say it's offensive and ignore it yourself; it's another thing entirely to attempt to ban millions of people (some of whom might not share your views) from seeing it.
