Out of curiosity, how many of you like DeLoreans? I'm not really into cars all that much, but because of Back to the Future, I really want to buy one and modify it like the DeLorean from BTTF. Anyone know how much it would cost to get one?

I remember the unvieling of the DeLorean when I went to the SF Auto Show as a kid. (I don't think that was the official unvieling-I was pretty young so not up to date on everything that happened) And since I was young, and it was a stainless steel sports car with gull-wings I thought it was fantastic. I also remember when John DeLorean was busted for selling cocaine (there was a poster where a DeLorean sat in snow with a dealer plate and a bumper sticker that said "Enjoy Coke").

So, from that I think the car is cool. Something I think you forget somewhere between your teens and later is that sometimes you like a car for reasons other than it's 'stats'. It was a kind of dumpy, odd looking, under-powered car. But it was also stainless-steel car with gullwings and sometimes that all a car needs to be.

Here (http://browse.collectorcartraderonline.com/adbrowsemodels/Exotic/Delorean) is a listing of 16 of them for sale, to give you an idea of the price ranges. There is even a rare red one on that page.

I'm sure if you hunted around you could find a kit to convert it to the Back to the Future car. There are kits to turn 80s Trans Ams into K.I.T.T. (http://www.knightreplicas.com/)

So happy hunting.

I ought to introduce you to my brother. He's obsessed with back to the future *and* DeLoreans. When I was younger I made the mistake of saying I didn't know what a DeLorean was. We were in the car at the time (neither of us driving) and he drew a DeLorean for me on the back of the driver's seat, so I could see. Then, when we got home a few weeks later, he made me watch all the back to the futures back to back.

(in case their not up when you click, it's a Back to the Future DeLorean lighter and a Back to the Future II remote control car. Why II? Don't know...) and sure enough, there is (http://www.bttfdelorean.com/) a place you can get kits to convert your DeLorean to the Back to the Future car.

DeLoreans. I guess it would be really corny nowadays. But the 80's period was a strange one anyway.

Nowadays it's used to mock 80s consumption/style-the jerk fiance in TheWedding Singer drives one, and in The Simpsons episode where Troy McClure marries Patty to restart his career that peaked in the 80s he gets a ticket while driving a DeLorean. Chief Wigum even gets hit in the jaw by the door when Troy opens it.

If that's true, where do they put the flux capacitor, and where do they get them from? :D
I'd love a Delorean, but purely as a show off eccentricity. I can't drive, and if I could, I'd choose something a little... you know... better.

If it's in good shape, it's about 10000€. Maybe less, I'm not quite sure.
I don't like it 'cause it has a volvo engine. Volvo is crap...Just like Saab and everything else in Sweden.

Those cars sucked the big one. Underpowered and as ugly as sin. My brother owned one (for about a year) and said he thought it was cool at first, but was a lousy handling, underpowered steel beast. I'll stick with my plastic lime-green Bricklin.

Well, I suppose I could always enhance the steering and engine, if I'm putting in the money to turn it into a BTTF DeLorean. But it would mean a huge amount to me to have one like that, because I met my girlfriend/future wife because of BTTF.

You also have to take into account that with the way the doors open, rising up like they do, that you can never park in a conventional parking lot with a car on either side of you, or get in your DeLorean when someone parks next to you...well, not without doing a good bit of damage anyway

Actually, that's not as true as you might think. The gullwing doors have a small clearance, so they actually take up only a small amount of space. But, it's still something to watch out for.
Though this would be more of a car to simply have than drive around, though I can just imagine the odd stares I'd get driving through a town in the BTTF DeLorean... :D

Not true, at least, not anymore. I could easily get one for 20,000 dollars.

Wha-huh? The doors go up, not out. A conventional door requires WAY more side to side clearance than a gullwing, which requires virtually none. If anything, if some dillhole parks too close to you you can still get you door open and get in the car. The only possible problem I can imagine is parking in a low ceiling parking garage, but it would have to be an unreasonably low ceiling.

I looked at my own link because I had always thought that the average price for a DeLorean was @ $16,000 and I noticed someone selling one for $30,000.

For that much it better travel through time.

Why? Are you plannin' on racing it? Impressing the hot-rod crowd at the bar? No, you like the car because of an emotional connection-you don't owe anything to the natering neighbobs of negativity. It already does what it's ment to do, make you smile. Who the hell cares if someone thinks its underpowered or not as springy as it could be. You're about to stack it with replica props. You have a different goal. Despite the nattering, the Volvo engine (though I thought it was Renault, but I defer since I don't know for sure) runs as strong as you need it to. The hot rod crowd, by definition, cannot be saited. Don't worry about them and enjoy your dream car.

Signed a hot rod guy who also has love for the absurd vehicles that make him smile.

My uncle designed the light cluster on the DeLorean. I've known a couple of people who owned one.

But remember, the doors must go out to the side to rise upward, look at BTTF, the things open far outside the limits of a normal car's doors, the gull wings would still have to extend to the sides as they go upwards.
