You're quoting a man from 1871 to prove your point? Darwin's theories were only the initial jumping off point for current evolutionary theory. He was still a product of his time and thus believed that the Western/white race was inherently superior to what he called the "savage races." Also present at that time was a theory called "social darwinism", which held that the poor and uneducated deserved to be that way as a result of some kind of inherited inferiority. This was used to argue against social welfare of any kind, be it for a white person or minority.

There is a distinct difference between race and ethnicity; you should really not confuse the two. Race is, indeed, a largely "made up" social construct that classifies a person based on the color of their skin and other physical attributes. The three classic races - Caucasoid, Mongolid, and Negroid - correspond to what we now call white, Asian, and black. Of course, many people don't fit in those categories at all. Ethnicity is a matter of cultural identity; thus we have people of various races who may all feel they belong to a similiar culture. If you were to move to Niger, no, you would not be part of the Nigerian ethnic group, because you would not have the same background, upbringing, values, etc. that are common to those who are part of the Nigerian culture.

However, it is a very logical piece of reasoning that the pro-lifers tend to overlook because they're too busy moralizing. I really don't think that abortions would ever be likely to have an important effect on our population growth, personally, but the argument can be presented calmly and would be recieved better by more literate audiences than the rather inane "abortion is murder" line. Also, I tend to favor zero population growth, though this has nothing to do with abortion and everything to do with keeping a thriving and prosperous economy because of the heightened birth rates that seem to correlate with poverty-stricken countries or countries that have inadequate welfare systems, basically meaning that I want to achieve zero growth by making sure that nobody has to go hungry and by keeping a healthy and stable economy.

However, these issues belong somewhere else.
