Can you spell your own lack of religion?

Seriously, I'm not usually worried about spelling, but I'm pretty sure the following is the most misspelled word on this forum:

Atheist, root word theist, as in theism or theology.

It is not, I repeat not, athiest, which means absolutely nothing. If you are an atheist, at least be able to properly spell your own philosophy. If you are opposed to atheism, at least be able to spell the philosophy you are opposed to.

Ok, done.

For lo, the Holy Book commandeth that Thou Shalt Not be athy, nay, not even a little bit athy.

Which is why even today athy people are not on good terms with organised religion.

It's just worse with the athier people among us. And as for the very athiest - well, I shudder to think.

It gives us the ability to drink shitloads without getting drunk on account of us not believing in alcohol, in addition we can also levitate on account of not believing in gravity- its a fun life being an athIEst.

Nah, atheist doesn't mean believing in nothing. It means not believing in a god or gods. Good grief, I'm posting. I only came in here to see what CelebrityFrogs had written.

From http://home.teleport.com/~packham/atheist3.htm

ETHICAL ATHEISM or EXISTENTIAL ATHEISM (Sartre, Camus):
Because life is absurd, there is no god. The idea of god is inconsistent with the idea of freedom.
PSYCHOLOGICAL ATHEISM (Feuerbach):
Ideas of god are simply of psychological origin.
SOCIOLOGICAL ATHEISM (Engels, Bakunin):
Ideas of god are false because they have caused social repression.
PRAGMATIC ATHEISM:
Ideas of god are not useful, therefore they must be false.
METAPHYSICAL ATHEISM (d'Holbach, Marx):
Since only matter exists, god - being immaterial - cannot exist.
EPISTEMOLOGICAL ATHEISM:
Knowledge of god is impossible. There are several subcategories:
SKEPTICAL ATHEISM: (based on Hume, although Hume was not atheist)
Since one cannot be certain of knowing anything, one cannot know of the existence of God.
LOGICAL-POSITIVE ATHEISM (Ayer):
Any statement about a transcendent being is fundamentally meaningless.
LINGUISTIC-ANALYSIS ATHEISM:
Since the term "god" cannot be defined, it cannot have meaning.
OBJECTIVIST ATHEISM (Ayn Rand):
Proof of anything about god has never been satisfactorily given.

Given that that's quite simply not what the word means, I'm going to have to ask for some kind of source or argument for this rather far out there claim.

Ok. so.
atheist.
a-the-ist.
a: greek negation or english word meaning 'a'
the: english article or french for 'tea'
ist: german for 'is'
-> atheist= a tea is / or: no tea is, means roughly 'tea does exist' or 'tea does not exist.
i'm very confused now.
...and I have no clue how that's supposed to back up Gran Togaland's claim...

Actually Atheism is not a lack of religion. That spot is occupied by agnosticism. Atheism is the active belief that there is no god.

Had you bothered to look in a dictionary -

Atheist - from the Greek Atheos meaning without god [ a = not + Theos = God]

Concise Oxford Dictionary (4th Edition 1961)

In truth, the term "lack of religion" does not imply anything about a belief or lack of a belief in a god. A theist, agnostic, or atheist can all be devod of an actual religion.

However, militant atheists tend to get angry when you point out that their belief in no god is on par with the belief in a god, and I was making a point about how to spell it - not trying to start an argument.
