You know with Bush wanting to goose step the planet to try and force his vision of political paradise down every throat, I just hope you're ready for American political refugees seeking asylum. The only question is, will you be swamped by American economic refugees first.

My guess is the economic. Bush just waved the battle flag in front of every totalitarian regime on the planet, including the biggest one China. Which just happens to be buying up surplus dollars. Which just happens to be keeping the dollar afloat.

Of course we can speculate if Bush's inauguration speech is just a load of empty undoable crap, just because the man has nothing else to flog before the American people.

The third part of your post will stand. Even if the pig bush had the intentions to do it, which is like a joke, the USA does not have neither the legitimacy or the resources to do it.

What I loved about his speech was the fact he was quoting Lincoln about freedom, when he has people locked in Guantanamo (sp?) Bay without trial.

Pheonix, you have a valid point. The only problem where I live is that the Prime Minister/government can't wait trying to kiss Bushs butt by sending soldiers here (to Iraq), backing him up there, totally ignoring the people's will everywere (No, I'm not in Britain, but in Norway)!

Well didn't Lincoln suspend the writ of habeus corpus? I mean that still sucks, but at least its not hypocritical.

I guess you forgot the moment in history when Lincoln, at the beginning of the Civil War, sent Federal troops into the Maryland legislature in Annapolis, and forced them at gun point (rifles actually aimed at the legislators in the room) to vote to stay in the Union.

Or maybe you forgot the Union troops (who, ultimately, were under Lincoln's command as he was the President) who were sent to New York and fired on the crowds of protesters who didn't want to be drafted. The first use of the Gatling gun in the United States.

Does everyone somehow have a purely rosy view of Lincoln? Is everyone really that ignorant?

Since when is the US a two party system? Last I recalled we have an infinite number of political parties depending on the will of the people and those who feel they can run the government.

The only reason we appear to have a two party system to uninformed jackasses is that we do have two parties that end up being so much more prominent than all others that the others don't even show up.

Granted I disagree with my government interfering with other countries' policies, but I also disagree with misinformed nutjobs bashing that which they apparently are not educated in. Argue all you want, you're wrong.

Rather than respond directly to this post, having given up flamming for Lent, kindly allow me to refer you to a defintion of the term "sovereignty:"

http://plato.stanford.edu/entries/sovereignty/#1 ( click "Definition" )

This defintion is quite long, since the term "sovereignty" is generally defined by practice at the time it is being defined. The bases of sovereignty are several, usually having little or nothing to do with the desires and wishes of the people. This is where the rub is.

My contention is that without an opportunity for the people to participate in the process of government, there can be no real sovereignty.

Oooh, lucky you, Lent doesn't start until 2/9 this year, so get those flame-retardent undies back out of the closet.

I would suspect that the sovereign monarchs of, oh let's the 1500s would disagree mightily with you. Democracy has never been a pre-requisite of sovereignty. And if you have your way and such a participatory opportunity is required, who judges whether the people's opportunity to participate is real or sham?
