Shirley Manson.

Oddly enough I'm listening to Garbage right now.

I voted Tori Amos, but I do like Shirley Manson. It was a hard decision. Why wasn't P J Harvey a choice?

Its all about Toris Amos, shes so beautiful and intelligent. But theres something haunting about her voice... like she could see right through you, like she knows something we don't.

For the record, I dont think of Sheryl Crow as a 'scary art chick' shes just damned smoking! - I mean... those lips... theres sex appeal dripping from every word she sings. Shes the female re-invention of Jimmy Page and Robert Plant all rolled into one.

Nor Gwen Stefani, the fact alone that she dated Bradley Nowell says enough... shes gorgeous, and so stylish it hurts.

Jewel isnt 'scary' either, in the 90's she was so wholesome and sweet looking. The princess of sweet sounds. She could have me on my knees.

Tori Amos. Although, I don't know about limiting her to the 90s. She still puts out albums regularly (The Beekeeper will be released next month).

Oooh difficult choice. I went for Gwen Stefani but it was hard to choose between her, Alanis, and the bird from the Cranberries (she has a fantastic voice! In fact...I should have voted for her instead. I wanna change my vote!!:P)

Shirley Manson rocks!! She's got an amazing voice, she's a great lyricist, she's gorgeous, and she's an inspiration to anyone who ever self-harmed, to boot.

Suzanne Vega is scarrier than half the women on the poll. Imho.

Simply: 10 choices, and she didn't make the cut. Neither did Meredith Brooks, Tracey Bonham or a slew of others...

There has never been, and probably never will be, anyone half as scary as Patti Smith

Think "Of" being "In", not "From". :)

So does Sheryl Crow, Garbage & Gwen Stefani...

She's another that just didn't make the cut... mostly as I feel her to be more of a 70s/80s artist...

I voted Tori, but it's definitely on the strength of her 90's work. I just heard her new single... And between that and her last few albums, I kinda feel she's losing her edge....

I agree. Neither Scarlet's Walk nor To Venus and Back impressed me, although From The Choirgirl Hotel was one of the best albums she's ever done (but again that was 7 years ago).

(I'm not sure what the term scary means - can't think of a single female singer - or any singer for that matter - that I find scary in the traditional sense of the word)

Gwen Stefani is a scary art chick? Trendy leader of a pop band? Huh?

Is Laurie Anderson an 80s thing, then? Or, I guess, if you're scared of Gwen Stefani then Anderson is down right terrifying.

I'm 31, and I've never heard of Laurie Anderson. Sorry.

It's not a matter of being "scared of", it's more a matter of an artist that isn't "traditional". Pink would be another example. Or Madonna, to a point.

Dude, Pink, Gwen Stefani, and Maddonna are pop stars. One could hardly accuse them of art.

That's fair. I'll grant that in retrospect, I probably should have cut Dolores for Liz Phair and Sheryl Crow for PJ Harvey or something.

Myrth? Nah. I like to leave moderators out of it. Further, to the best of my knowledge Myrth didn't have a recording contract in the 90s. :D

Laurie Anderson is a kind of female Peter Gabriel (or he is a male Laurie Anderson). Same affinity for experimentation.

If we are throwing names into the hat I would have included Kate Bush and Toni Childs.

Kate Bush = sooooo 80s.

Don't know Toni Childs.

And I've always considered Peter Gabriel to be at best a mediocre musician at the right place at the right time.

back in the 80s a friend of mine walked in on his psycho annoying roommate pleasuring himself in contemplation of his beloved kate bush poster. everyone was amused by the story, except the witness who claimed to be moderately scarred by the horrible visual seared into his brain.

somehow i could never take kate bush seriously after that. i know it wasn't kate's fault, but the thought of "dan" sweating and panting to murmuring sweet nothings at her poster always just made her music seem more pretentiously ridiculous.

I voted Tori Amos.
The scariest one, however, wasn't in your poll. That would be Diamanda Galás.
I don't know if she's my favorite, but she certainly was scary and arty, and pretty much ties with Tori.

Ah, but Galas is not a close friend of Neil Gaiman, therefore Tori takes the title of scary art chick.

Obviously not everyone agrees as to what constitutes a scary art chick.

Personally, having seen Y Kant Tori Read's video a lot, I don't really know if Tori is *that* scary. :)

When I think "scary art chick", I have to go back further in time, and conjure up Yoko Ono.

It has to be that combination of un-art and un-beauty and pompous egocentrism that makes you want to run screaming from the building when you see her.

I voted Sinead, cause she is pretty attractive. Especially if she grew her hair and wore a pretty blouse ;)
And she's scary.
When you say scary, I assume what would it be like to go out with them.
Sinead would be likely to hole you against the wall and personally claim you responsible for every bit of discrimination women have ever suffered, and then launch into a huge rant about how corrupt the Pope is.
Also I would hazard to say she'd have bad breath and doesn't shave - to show that 'real' women don't need to look after themselves like that.
Truly frightening concept.

As for the others - Manson would probably try to piss on you and throw a used tampon into your soup, if the news articles are anything to go by. But that's still not as scary as getting a 3 hour lecture from a deranged bald Irish woman on the evils of the Catholic Church.
Delores is just a poor man's Sinead.
And while Alanis has a face like a horse and albums with fucking irritating, appalling and pretentious songs she does have one thing going for her - and that's contained in the opening lines of her song "You Oughta know". I'll leave it to you to figure that out. ;)
