:D (I know it's crap)
I got a program a while ago called "power tab editor". If you can play guitar, you can use it to make your own cruddy sounding songs. You can get it at http://www.power-tab.net/ and it's free.
If someone makes one, post it here :p

Why not record it with a real guitar?
I would, but I don't have a proper mic. I can try with the small one I suppose, but it will probably sound like indistinguishable background noise.
This was just for fun because I thought the program was cool, nothing serious :p

I use Guitar Pro (4) when making solos (for guitar) and such. It´s better ´cause you get up to 128 MIDI instruments, from drums to bass to whole string sections, ^^
But it´s damn expensive and you pretty much have to order it from France.

*grins* I thought it sounded like an 8-bit Nes or Sega game :p

Maybe I should had been more clear, I do play real instruments (first instrument: guitar, 2nd: drums) but it´s an easy way of trying out different sounds and tunings before actually having to spend ages listening for the right tuning and whatnot.
I´m just lazy :)

There might be a market out there for crappy 8 bit game style music...

Actually...that's a good use for it. This program might do the trick.

Yeah! I can see it now...me sitting with a laptop on a huge stage surrounded by thousands of adoring fans :D
Wow, thanks for the laugh, dude!
It does sound something like old nintendo music, the kind you turn your tv volume all the way down and listen to the radio instead.
Good luck with the real guitar!

Admittedly there are a number of midi files I enjoy, but they've been made on expensive software.

It's probably somewhat due to my compositional skills. If I had 3 guitars playing at once and some bass, i could probably do some nice stuff, but i'm simply crap :p

By the way, is anyone else having trouble with the forums? I keep on getting messages saying "invalid thread specified".

I personally don't use music software for my cheesy recording sessions. Then again,I've never tried so I might enjoy it.
I like the idea of laying tracks on my Tascam recorder n having all my instruments hooked to it ie.my keyboard, amp, guitar etc.It just feels more satisfying taping then remixing down to a tape deck.I should try it out as I'm sure it would speed up the recording process.
Peace
So how do you go about recording instruments properly on computer? What equipment do I need and more importantly what will it cost me? :p

I use Sibelius 3 to write my stuff. I have more music if it's requested. That one is an insturmental in 7/8 time.

Depends on the instrument. I have an IR drive connected to my soundblaster live card ($100?). You'll also need amps and mixing equipment. ($500 each?) Some instruments require pickups for best sound also. All up I think from $1000 to $20000 depending. I aslo recommend a 200GB+ hard drive. Raw music takes up space.

Well, I could probably afford a low-end system. I'll save up for a better amp first though :)

Unless you want to individually record 20 different instruments with individual tracks (and therefore effects, etc.), a low-end system should be ample. :) If it's mainly guitars, they're already designed for recording anyway. With one amp and a decent sound card, it's incredible what one can do. (especially if you play all the instruments yourself) ;)

Name a good program, I will download it. I need a creative release. :)
I actually recorded something :D
It sounds a bit tinny, but surprisingly not bad for a headset mic.
Anyone know any free programs that can record longer than a minute? (the windows sound recorder doesnt really cut it :p)
I'll upload it as soon as i can find a site.
Congrats...

If you can play guitar, get the power tab editor from www.power-tab.net
Otherwise, I think theres another one called FruityLoops. Haven't used it though.
www.freewebs.com/kanabia/jams/jam.wav
(should work...the file is only 1.3mb or something so its not the size that's causing it to download so slow, its freewebs.com's cruddy speed.)

you have to save them as .mid
Once you have made something, go to "export as MIDI" under "file"

Yes, I believe I have figured it out. These are a couple of basic midi's I created based on two little finger picking melodies I have been messing around with lately. I haven't even come close to grasping the setting up of the beats or the percussion yet, but at least the melodies sound close.
