Well not really small, but mid-range. Apparently thinking that they (Boeing) can't do bigger than the 747, Boeing have opted to develop the 7E7 and try to convince the aviation industry that bigger is not better.
The case for going for the 7E7 over Airbus' A380 is that passengers will prefer to incur higher ticket prices and fly direct to their destinations rather than play less, but have to change at airport hubs.
:edit: I guess it took them 35 years to decide they actually really wanted to build something smaller. <.<

Actually Boeing is working on a small, unmanned, stealthy light bomber for suppression of enemy air defense.

I just wanted to post a satirical reply to the 'French build big airplane' and that 'it took then 35 years to build a plane bigger than the 747'.

Yet somehow you may have managed to start a serious thread.

Damnit, I hope not. I hate it when people on NS get all serious AND flamey, which I believe is what would happen on this type of subject.
"OUR PLANEZ R BETER TAHN YOURZ! WE CAN USE THE A380 TO FLY OVER TEH USA TO DROP NUKEORZ!"
