We have to go to school on Martin Luther King day which is today but next Friday we dont go to school because of Stock Show. Stupid animals are becoming more important than an important day in History.

If Martin Luther King Jr was white, there probably would have been more importance placed. But then that's America, white and right ...

Woah, man. I think Martin Luther King day is a national holiday, and you have to get off school for it. I did. You could probably check to see if your school is doing something illegal and become like one of those activists on the news shows. Serious.

Yes, even the stock market shuts down on Martin Luther King Day. It is a national holiday, the stock show is not. By the way, where do you live?

Wait, in Wisconsin, you don't get off for even presidents' day. MLK not a school shut down or work shut down holiday. Some financial institutions follow it, but no, there are no laws being broken.

I work for an organization that is funded by the Federal government. The feds are off, as are we, the county, and I believe the city. All of our schools are closed, too. Please note I live in the evil, prejudiced, bigoted south.

MLK day is a national holiday, but there is no national law stating that schools/businesses have to get the day off. In most areas, it is an either/or between MLK day and President's Day. Schools in the south often seem to get MLK day off, but not President's Day. In the Northern areas, it is often the opposite. I believe the choice is a state issue, not a national one.

It's a bank/federal holiday, all government institutions are supposed to be closed...

It's a shame that nobody actually DOES anything for MLK day. Let us all sing, "We shall overcome".

Whatever. I think we place too much emphasis on holidays, and getting off of work, than on actually getting along. If you had a day off, how would you spend it? Arguing on this message board, like I am doing? That is very respectful to the cause of civil rights. I realize I am impugning myself here too, but I just think holidays like this are crap, because they don't really do anything except make racists and regular people feel good without doing anything.

Technically, I do have a day off, but I am at work nonetheless (as well as talking on the message boards).

but I just think holidays like this are crap, because they don't really do anything except make racists and regular people feel good without doing anything.

To a point, I think you are right. There are those out there who will say "Look, there is no more racism, we even have this holiday!" However, for many people, a holiday such as this is a day to remember what came before, to think about where we are now, and where we still have to go.

Well... Here, no one expects you to know when *any* major day is. I think it's cause they think that if they give you the day off school, it's an excuse to go shopping and get wasted, and that isn't what these things are meant to be about.

I remember when we had two holidays - Washington's Birthday and Lincoln's Birthday. Now we have President's Day.

Right now, we have Martin Luther King Day. To show how little faith I have in the future of humanity, I believe that in my lifetime, this will become Martyr's Day (or Assassinated Persons Day).

That's odd, my school district(northeastern Ohio) gets both days off. Of course, the School Board here is combrised of evil SOBs and we never get off for inclement weather. I don't think that has anything to do with it though.

I THink is very important because it's a day that one man spoke up weather the consequences meant dying. He had a vision of happiness and equality between races. I think our country today is based on equality no matter what the race and Martin Luther King inspired us to be what we are today. I am not African American, I'm Hispanic, but it still means very much to me. I honor Martin Luther King and in respect the School should honor him also, not the cows and goats.

I don't know about that one. John Brown was white, he led a slave revolt to free the blacks. Died a martyr to the cause. He's hardly remembered at all.

In Pinellas County, Florida, schools were closed yesterday to honor the birth of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., a civil rights activist who was assassinated in the 1960s. There were parades in Tampa and St. Petersburg.

It is too bad that school district leaders in some areas of the country have decided against taking this day off, in remembrance of a great leader who encouraged people to live in peace, and to treat each other as equals.

In our county, we elect the school district people who make such decisions. If I lived in an area where children went to school on MLK Day, then I would ask the local media to uncover why these leaders believe a day for showing off prize farm animals is more important than a day to remember a man who was murdered for leading the causes of peace and equality.

Thanks for the great quotes. We still have a long way to go to realize the ideal of America but because of Dr. King and people like him we make progress toward that ideal while we contend with those individuals of all races who would set aside the hopes and dreams for personal gain and gratification. The battle continues and it always will.

For those who wish to denigrate the place of "white" people, you are not the solution - you are another version of the same old problem. You energize and sustain the polarization that drives people apart. You need to reconsider your general;ized suppositions and prejudices.

At one point in time, schools in Mississippi were closed on MLK day because it "just happened" to fall on the same day as the state holiday honoring Gen. Lee and Jeff Davis's Birthdays. They had the best of both worlds.

You are misinformed. Much of the country does celebrate it, and many city offices are closed. However, not all of the states have decided to make it an official holiday, and non-city/governmental offices are not obliged to celebrate it any more than Valentine's Day or Kennedy's Birthday are.

Kennedy's birthday? Are you from Massachusetts? I heard it was a holy day of obligation there!
