This is a newsletter that St. Mary's church in Colorado Springs sent out.

"If Your Child is a Gothic, Reform through the Lord! Listed below are some warning signs to indicate if your child may have gone astray from the Lord. Gothic (or goth) is a very obscure and often dangerous culture that young teenagers are prone to participating in. The gothic culture leads young, susceptible minds into an imagined world of evil, darkness, and violence. Please seek immediate attention through counseling, prayer, and parental guidance to rid your child of Satan's temptations if five or more of the following are applicable to your child:

·Frequently wears black clothing.

·Wears band and/or rock t-shirts.

·Wears excessive black eye makeup, lipstick or nail polish.

·Wears any odd, silver jewelry or symbols. Some of these include: reversed crosses, pentagrams, pentacles, ankhs or various other Satanic worshipping symbols.

·Shows an interest in piercing or tattoos.

·Listens to gothic or any other anti-social genres of music. (Marilyn Manson claims to be the anti-Christ, and publicly speaks against the Lord. Please discard any such albums IMMEDIATELY.)

·Associates with other people that dress, act or speak eccentrically.

·Shows a declining interest in wholesome activities, such as: the Bible, prayer, church or sports.

·Shows an increasing interest in death, vampires, magic, the occult, witchcraft or anything else that involves Satan.

·Takes drugs.

·Drinks alcohol.

·Is suicidal and/or depressed.

·Cuts, burns or partakes in any other method of Self-mutilation. (This is a Satanic ritual that uses pain to detract from the light of God and His love. Please seek immediate attention for this at your local mental health center.)

·Complains of boredom.

·Sleeps too excessively or too little.

·Is excessively awake during the night.

·Dislikes sunlight or any other form of light. (This pertains to vampires promoting the idea that His light is of no use.)

·Demands an unusual amount of privacy.

·Spends large amounts of time alone.

·Requests time alone and quietness. (This is so that your child may speak to evil sprits through meditation.)

·Insists on spending time with friends while unaccompanied by an adult.

·Disregards authority figures; teachers, priests, nuns and elders are but a few examples of this.

·Misbehaves at school.

·Misbehaves at home.

·Eats Goth-related foods. Count Dracula cereal is an example of this.

·Drinks blood or expresses an interest in drinking blood. (Vampires believe this is how to attain Satan. This act is very dangerous and should be stopped immediately.)

·Watches cable television or any other corrupted media sources. (Ask your local church for proper programs that your child may watch.)

·Plays videos games that contains violence or role-playing nature.

·Uses the internet excessively and frequently makes time for the computer.

·Makes Satanic symbols and/or violently shakes head to music.

·Dances to music in a provocative or sexual manner.

·Expresses an interest in sex.

·Masturbates

-Is homosexual and/or bisexual.

· Pursues dangerous cult religions. Such include: Satanism, Scientology, Philosophy, Paganism, Wicca, Hinduism and Buddhism.-Wears pins, stickers or anything else that contains these various phrases: "I'm so gothic, I'm dead", "woe is me", "I'm a Goth".

·Claims to be a Goth.

If five or more of these apply to your child, please intervene immediately. The gothic culture is dangerous and Satan thrives within it. If any of these problems persist, enlist your child into your local mental health center. ~St. Mary's Catholic Church"

Self-mutilation is NOT a Satanic ritual. It is a severe mental problem in many cases. it is very tough to deal with, and sheer hell to go through. Don't trivialize it.
I do agree that counseling and therapy is needed, though.

No, this is because we want pale skin. Also, some of us, like me, can't spend very long in the sun before we start to get sunburn since we have naturally extemely pale skin. Also, have you ever been out inthe sun wearing multiple layers of black clothes? It's not much fun. On top of all this, I have extremely sensitive eyes, and I prefer the dark since it doesn't give me eyestrain. But that's just me.

Why do so many people think that Role-playing is bad/unhealthy. It builds a good imaginatian, and depending on the type modeling skills, painting skills, drama skills, ect. And why do people seem to think it is anti-social it requires one to interact with other people, otherwise who are you roleplaying with. And howcome so many people equate wearing black with being a goth it is a perfectly sensible color that goes well with most otherthings.

They may think it's the work of another and are trying to stay out of each other's business, or they may just want to ignore it because they think it's rubbish, or maybe they don't even know about it. I'm not even going to touch this one. If this is real (which I am about 89% sure it isn't) I have officially lost faith in humanity.

Yep, the "goth" media witch-hunt is just the longest in a succession of similar convenient scapegoats for anything and everything.

I have been priveleged to be involved in almost all of these: when the latest media craze was "Evil Heavy Metal Corrupts Our Kids!" I was a card carrying metalhead. When it was "Evil Dungeons and Dragons Corrupts Our Kids!" I was (and still am) an avid payer of D&D and other RPGs. When it was "Evil Computer Games Corrupt Our Kids!" I was happing blowing people away playing Postal, Carmageddon and other such "nasty" video games.

Media hype such as this merely presents people with a convenient scapegoat when some kids goes out and kills himself or someone else - it is much easier to say "Little Billy was driven mad by [insert latest media scapegoat here]!" instead of saying "Little Billy was neglected by his parents, and clearly had sever mental issues which were never diagnosed and/or addressed".

This thing is not real as I've seen it several times. Some of the things on it make sense, and some are stupid. You can tell its fake from the Count Chocula part though.

According to that list, the Pope is a goth. Hasn't anyone noticed the upside down cross carved into his chair? It is the cross of Saint Peter and no self respecting Catholic orginization would include it in a list of Satanic symbols.

Of course, it has been used by extremeist Protestants like Jack Chick as proof that the Catholic Church is an instrument of Satan.

Hmmm. I guess the reason for it is that St. Peter was crucified upside down so the Pope has it in his chair to symbolize that he is the succesor of Peter.

the inverted cross is the cross of the martyr, or witness. Its only a satanic symbol because they use it differntly, using it symbolize the reverse of christ. Its not the symbol you use, its how you use it and what it means to you.

Another thing that is said the do at a Black Mass (satanic ritual) is recite the Lords Prayer backwards, to symbolize the reverseing of what it says.

Even the bible speaks about graven images, it says not to make because G-d didn't appear as anything other then fire, not that other images are made for other gods and goddesses. Its saying that often times the symbol becomes to focal part, rather then the ideals and the meanings.

Whats so bad about being a goth? I've met goths of every walk of life, I've known pagan goths, christian goths, and atheist goths. Its the inside that counts, not that out. From the inside we are known, from the outside we are seen.

I just noticed that it classes philosophy as a "cult religion". Oh my god, I'm planning to study a satanist cult at university!!! Does this mean that formal education has also been corrupted by the devil? :)

I dunno how I'd define it. I guess since the music really kicked it off, it's one of the most important bits. But there are so many directions in which the subculture took off, it's pretty muchly become just another ambiguous label.


And I hate it when people come up to me and ask me if I listen to Cradle of Filth. It's annoying because I do, but it has nothing whatsoever to do with my appearance, which is why they're asking, but I can't say no, because I do. I usually just have a psychotic break and start stabbing them with a spork or a pencil or something.
