I would really like to hear from any Jazz fans out there. I posted this early today and only got about 5 response. I will try it again. I would love to hear what you are listening to.

There was a thread a while ago by Pure Metal that got a ton of responses.

Right now I'm into:
Sex Mob, Garage a Trios, Pharoah Sanders, The Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Eric Dolphy (I'm always into Eric Dolphy), Uri Caine, and I'm in and out on Medeski, Martin and Wood.

I got a Zoot Sims/Al Cohn not too long ago that I hadn't listened to until recently that had some great tracks.

I don't know, what else do you want to know?

Thanks, for the reply. I am mostly looking for some different names/sounds that I might try out. Garage a Trios and Uri Caine I am competely unfamiliar with.

Garage a Trois (which I might be spelling wrong) is a funk jazz band like Medeski Martin and Wood, and they are a little hit and miss as most funk jazz can be.

Uri Caine is fucking fantastic-run, don't walk!
It's a a little bit of third stream meets free jazz in the John Zorn style without quite as much nonsense. He does a collection of Mahler interpretations that are great, and some others. He's on the Winter & Winter label which carries some fantastic stuff.

Also check out The Phillip Johnston Transparent Quartet. I have The Merry Frolics of Satan and its great.

You dont get more progressive then Coltrane, he is still waiting for Jazz to catch up.
I still listen to some of his stuff and think "What in the f*ck is he doing?"
Only later in traffic or during sex, or in an arguement does it come back to me and I say "OK, that really is music."

Latin jazz is the greatest form of jazz ever conceived by mankind. This is a fact, not a theory like evolution. It's also great because those lousy Americans didn't create it, and because I'm pretty damn sure the W doesn't even know what latin jazz is.

You're like an artist that works in arson.

I wanted to add The World Saxophone Quartet, with Julius Hemphill and Oliver Lake and Dave dammit, forgot the tenor player and he kicks so much ass. Murray, that's it.

And Hammiet Blueit. There are some Bluiett albums with a standard group on Bari sax-that dude kicks ass as well, but you have to be into free jazz for that stuff to rock. Otherwise you'll get iratated.

Not in New Orleans. Starting a party, or ending a wedding, with a band marching down the street is a several times a day occurance. I do so love that city. Other NO and early jazz artists to watch for...Leon Redbone, Fats Waller, Big Joe Turner, Bix Beiderbecke...you can branch out from there.

Coltrane is the master. You have to check out Thelonious Himself with Coltrane. He also appeared on Miles Davis' 58 Sessions.

I'm also into quiet storm style jazz...Sade, Natalie Cole, Al Jarreau. For cool jazz, Modern Jazz Quartet, Miles Davis, Ahmad Jamal.

Check out Joe Williams on albums like Count Basie Swings, Joe Williams Sings.

I saw him at a festival concert and we ended up walking out on Tony Bennet (after meeting him-shakes hands like a gangster) because after Williams it was just a let down.

I'm more into the missing links between ska en jazz. A very good example is the New York Ska-Jazz Ensemble. You should really try to get one of their albums. It's absolutely great. Futhermore a lot of the really old ska is quite similar to Jazz. Bands like the Skatalites play more or less the Jamaican answer to New Orleans Jazz. Try it, you sure you'd like it!!

I won't miss a Tain concert even if it means skipping rent and living on the streets. One of the rules I've found consistant in jazz: Drummers form the best bands. Art Blakey, Tony Williams, Tain, Max Roach.....you want a good band put together, let the drummer do it.

I have no idea why that works, it just does.

Hey, this thread is back so I can make a serious reply this time.

Latin jazz really is great. Probably one of my favorite musical genres period. And Arturo Sandoval is the god of latin jazz. He's just an amazing musician (and his piano ain't half bad either).

In general I like my jazz loud and fast (combos aren't really my deal). Ergo Maynard Ferguson really hits the spot for me, as well as the aforementioned Arturo Sandoval. Of course I like old school stuff as well, big band mostly, cause like I said, I like it loud.

There was a jazz quintet over here that was composed of 4 college students and 1 high school student. They were amazing. The high-school kid is a friend of mine. He's a total trumpet prodigy.

The band had a drummer, a bassist, a trumpeter, a trombonist, and a saxophonist.

They did one EP with an amazing cover of Watermelon Man on it. Unfortunately, I lost the fucking thing and haven't been able to find it for 2 months, and there was only an extremely limited run of it. i.e., under 100 copies.

Dizzy was a huge influence on Arturo. Have you seen the HBO movie about Arturo. Its pretty fun. There is a great scene where Arturo calls Dizzy in his hotel room because he can't get into the States when he is trying escape from the Cuban secret police. Dizzy tells him not to worry because he has the number for this "cat" in the government. Turns out it was the Vice-President. Great scene!!!
