It's fun subverting teachers intentions for projects. We had to do a project on the history of a religion. The teacher never specified what counted or not, so I researched Anton LeVay and the Church of Satan. The teacher was uber-pissed, especially since he had to give me a 98% in the project.

Man, that's not fair. I made a speech once that advocated blockading Africa and various other third-world countries for their own good. It was well-researched and my presentation was close to perfect from a technical standpoint. But my bitch of a teacher docked crazy amounts of marks because she didn't like what I said.

That happened the first time I did anything like that, but I managed to somehow get the principal to make him grade purely by the quality and not the opinions. That was like the one good thing that the principal ever did for me.

Akhenaten, Nefertiti's husband and Tut's probable son-in-law. He was called the "heretic pharoh". He claimed there was only one god and he could talk to him. The culture of the period allowed for dozens of gods. He had all traces of other gods destroyed and made the people acknowledge only one. There is a lot of mystery concerning his life. When he died, the priests tried to eliminate all reference to him and to date his tomb has never been found.

I have plenty of good references on my Hero - The Divine Marquis if you should ask. He was well ahead of his time. I laugh at postmodernism due to the fact it was old hat to the Marquis, I laugh at those who say are behavior is genetically influence because the Marquis said that well before genetic science came into being. Then there is his influence on the Revolution

If it doesn't have to be an American you should look into Elizabeth (Erzsébet) Bathory. She was a wacked out 16th century Transylvanian princess who figured the way to prevent wrinkles was to bathe in the blood of young girls. She opened a finishing school for young ladies and hung a cage with spikes above her bath so the blood would drip down on her.
Eventually the locals got tired of her evil ways and walled her up in her castle.

Go back to some of the greatest but somewhat unknown generals of the ancient world. Hannibal Barca or Scipio Africanus. I'll bet your teacher has never had a report turned in on either of them. And seriously, isn't writing about some of the greatest commanders of the ancient world better than hashing out yet another essay on yet another WWII leader or civil rights activist?

There has never been a Henry the Eleventh of England. I presume you mean Henry II (the second). She's often overlooked nowadays, but back in the 1800 you couldn't read a US paper without the name Victoria Woodhull on it. She was America's first woman candidate for president. SHe has an intense history. I won't spoil too much, but lets say she was Vanderbilt's clairvoyance, knew of a scandal involving Harriet Beecher Stowes brother, and not to mention starting with literally nothing and raising herself to becoming the first woman on wallstreet (as well as one of the wealthiest).
Also, I would reccomend Cicero, one of the greatest Roman statesmen and orators of all time. Always fighting for the people, he was one of the strongest advocates for the Roman Senate (as opposed to the Roman Empire).
I have personaly done a report on Hitler. If you make the paper neutral like you should anyway, the teacher probably wont mind it. It still gives the shock value when they find out who your subject is to.

How the hell does a report on Hitler have *any* shock value? Answering the question "who would you must like to talk to for an hour?" question with Hitler doesn't even have shock value anymore. Hundreds of thousands of students have done papers on Hitler so much that Hitler is the historical paper equivalent of an ethics paper on abortion.
