curious michael says: man in gods image? are you sure? (serious thread)
Hey....if man is in gods image, and woman never existed before man, and there is only one god...why did god have a willy?
im NOT joking. im being serious. if man is created 100% in the image of god...well...yes...why?
a second question: if you are into paradise lost and you go along with it (and i dont know if the chruch does or not...i cant remeber), why did god refer to man as knowing of good and evil "like one of us"? The kay word there is "us", and it can not refer to angels, as it is made clear (i think...i should re-read it, but it takes so so so long...) that agels have no knowledge of this - only god does...who else is there?
I apolagise if this seems rather...well..childish...its not meant that way, and it is picking at threads, but still...im curious.

Let me put it this way, if horses had a God, it would be a horse. We imagine a higher being "being" just like us (looks anyway) but it's just that he doesn't do any of the crap we do. Even though we can think critically, we don't on this one.

Despite the rhetoric and dogma your church smothers you with Jorge is right.
Man actually created God in his own image.
No one really knows what god looks like if there is one. To assume we are his image places us in a comforting position of favor. I gives us undeserved importance in whatever master plan controls the universe. It's bullshit designed to help you sleep at night.

God is really a creepy flying, rat-hippo thing that occasionally appears in a random small town in Colorado. And yes, I do like South Park, thanks for asking.

To the question of Gods willy, theologians commonly cite St Anselms ontological proof
"God is the most perfect being that can be concieved,
which is a more perfect being a god that cannot write his name in the snow?
or a god that can?
The god that can write his name in the snow is clearly the most perfect being
therefore God can write his name in the snow, therefore God has a willy"
oh dear.
...whereas i do value all of your replies, i was aiming this discussion at members of the NS community who DO belive that god created man - i personally think it was the other way around, but that is, afterall, why i am asking the question...
i was thinking about asking for "no answers based around the idea that god must get bored/lonely"...i wish i had, now ;)

And so he can play with it. That's why he gave himself one.

Yes. They belong in the kitchen.
(I am kidding, by the way, I don't disrespect women, I just felt that was an appropriate response)

Well, who wrote the bible? Men. You think they're gonna have God be a woman? Hell no! God being a woman would make women question those old guys with beards and why the women should have to be in the kitchen and make babies all day. Honestly, how many of those people do you believe actually even met God? Or saw Eve take that first crunchy, delicious bite of that apple? None. Hell, maybe they meant that God made us in his spiritual image. That's why I dislike all these arguments about whether God is a man or a woman. If he's a man, he would have to have a who-dilly, and if he was a woman, he would have to have a cha-cha. Personally, I don't believe that he is either one, I just call him he because it's easier.

you guys are BAD!
i would like to suggest that since we all look different and yet we are all made in the image of god, that perhaps something more GENERIC is meant by it. perhaps to GOD, we all look alike, sorta like an anglo americans first visit to china "how do they tell each other apart? they all look alike!" perhaps the slight rearrangement (or addition of) naughty bits is irrelevant to the whole issue

Gee, isn't this surprise. A reasonable responsible to a religious flame-bait question. It seems to me only the most concrete thinking three year old would really think that in "God's image" means some physical representation of that which if it exists (and I believe God exists) couldn't possibly have physical form. I guess this will irriate both the atheists and the Christians.

You are assuming that "image" means physical appearance. This is incorrect. Man (people) has traits and abilities like God, such as free will, creativity, etc....
Most theologians will tell you that the major differences between God and people (when they were created, not now) are that God is infinite, man is finite; and man is physical, God is not.

God's "willy" is called "Yesod"... yes, I'm serious ... look it up.
Worse than that, men's souls issue forth from Yesod ... we are the Divine spooge.

Yesod is the channel through which Tiferet strives to unite with the Shekhinah and pass on the creative and benevolent divine forces. It is symbolized as the male phallus, sanctified through the covenant of circumcision. In Eden, it was the Tree of Life. It is now represented earthly by the Kohainim.

I rather suspect it's a remnant left over from a text plagiarized by the Bible authors from some other religious text of that time which had polytheism. So God might have been referring to his fellow Gods. With how obscure the writing is, it's easy for some small slips to get through the watchful eyes of the editors.
ah.
paradise lost is an epic poem by john milton, and so isnt part of the bible....or edited by the vatican etc - it is a standalone work, which was supposedly dictated to him by angels or some such thing....anyway, it depicts the time of creation and mans fall from grace - but srry its not a bible passage

First, its on Earth man came first. Woman and man were both already in Heaven. But man came first on Earth. So for man to be in Heavenly Father's image isn't hard. You could assuke Heavenly Mother's image was used for inspiration of woman. (yes God the father's married)
a second question: if you are into paradise lost and you go along with it (and i dont know if the chruch does or not...i cant remeber), why did god refer to man as knowing of good and evil "like one of us"? No, Angels are us humans before being on Earth and given a body...
Thus US is all of us back in Premortal state.
..ah. right where to start...
okey - god the father may be married, but *not* in the paradise lost/christian view of the world..which is what im trying to investigate...by discussing with christians e.g. catholic, anglican whatever.....
second...there are no female angels. angels sexuality is touched upon simply by raphael blushing and saying to adam somehting to the tune of "lets just say we have our ways" *wink*
again, in the christian mythos angels and humans are completely 100% in no way the same thing. human souls as i recall are stored in the room of gauf and are placed in the unborn child by god..or breathed into them at the moment of birth - one of those 2 anyway.
now...as to what you have said - those may be your belifes and i do respect them, but the dscussion here is about the facts of widely accepted christian belifes and how that tallies with paradise lost - so on those grounds you can not say that angels are our pre-human form..because thats not true - neither in the bible nor in paradise lost. it might ACTUALLY be true in life, i just dont know, thats not wjat the discussion is about. nor for that matter does that appear in any other text i have heard of which forms part of the jewish religions (apolagies, thats not meant to sound dismissive - im not saying its better or worse than the christian side of things im just saying it for completness' sake that bastardsword's interpretation does not appear in either...i think...i know that malkuth is the female principal...but i dont think thats tyhe same as him beoing married...otherwise the systemma would surely be unecessary...as god would not be totally removed...i think...actually that bit confuses me but anyway - apolagise if i have that wrong).
On the same basis i have to say "no, god is not married"...because hes not in the mythos we are discussing...or i am discussing...alas everyone else seems to want to discuss something else lol! my fault..i shoudl have made it clearer.

God is a spiritual being, and created us in his spiritual image, not a physical one.
Even regarding the quite possibility of it being a lie, why does everyone take it in the literal physical aspect?
Maybe we are all like him in the sense that we are curious, emotional, and sentient beings?
