Have you ever met anyone you've encountered online in real life?

I just wondered if any of you had ever made friends/lovers online and had met them in real life? Good experiences? Bad? poll to come if I can figure it out.

Out of the people I've met online that I've met, they've all been good experiences.

In fairness as well, that number is currently about a dozen, mainly from online communities, but with a couple of more personal contacts.

I've met 2 people online, and they were both great experiences. I have visited them, and them me, several times. I also have a few friends that I have not met in person, but we talk on the phone and send Christmas presents, Birthday, etc. I have only been online for about 4 years now, and I used to make fun of people who developed online relationships. That was due to lack of ever experiencing it. I usually dont knock things until I try them. I admit...I was wrong. I know people who have not only met, but have fallen in love, married and started a family. Good luck to any of you who have an online relationship or who may be meeting someone in the near future. You may just walk away from it with a friend (or more) for life. :)

Not in person, although I've talked to people that have met them in person and I heard only positive things, so maybe I will one day.

Yes, and he was lovely. We had drinks and discussed the merits of socialism.

You can make one yourself, Peechland, if you have access to an inkjet printer. They sell this special paper-- you print out your picture, then you iron it on to whatever you like. I've considered it, given the number of NSers in my vicinity.

It's the aboriginal flag :p

And I have met 2 people I've known online first. Only still in contact with one of them though, her being Unfree People on NS.

My experience was so weird, I used to play Counter-Strike on a particular server quite often, and started using the name Mr Playa, and someone else that was on often picked up the name I Hate Mr Playa in response to me killing him alot.

Months later a new semester started and i was taking a VB programming course, and a kid a few computers down from me I noticed was visiting some CS websites so we started talking. It came around that he played on the same server I did alot, and asked the name I used. He almost fell off his seat, and through his laughter i made out "Im I Hate Mr Playa".

Just thought this was an extreme coincidence and rather funny.

Quite a few, yes. Most from groupmeetings from a few fora, some through chat. Sofar only two "bad" experiences - bad in the sense that it didn't click IRL as much as it did online. No axe murderers or men posing as girls sofar ;)

Only met one... was meeting a girl (or rather woman) I had known for a number of years when she came to Toronto last summer for the anime con. She's a good friend of mine. ^_^

Yes, quite a number actually. Some business-related, most not.

Nope, I really, I have no interest in meeting most. Thats how I sort of met my girlfriend, although I kind of already knew her before that.

I go to gaming conventions every year. I've met hundreds of people at these conventions after having met them online first. Normal as anything to me.

Some people from the UK and Germany mostly. One guy from the US even. He was here in Belgium for his sister's wedding, and he had some time to kill anyway.

This other messageboard I go to has a large concentration of members around London, so it's sort of natural for them to meet up.

many many
all good experiences.

turns out that the people you know online who you meet in real life are UTTERLY average people (which makes them seem, as a group, rather below average)

those who lie about themselves never show up no matter how banal the lies. they are just too embarrassed to admit the truth and be just the average people they are in real life.

in any case, its worth meeting your online friends in real life. as long as you meet for the first time in public (dont meet the ones that say "oh dont tell your parents, just meet me at the motel 6 down by the train tracks"!) its at least as safe as hanging out at the local mall for the afternoon.

I've met about ... eight? I think eight people from online. They were all from a roleplaying chat site though; haven't met anyone off of NationStates that I didn't already know from somewhere else.

No, but I have had someone claim to have met me. She said I met her somewhere in Florida, and then later again in Floriad but that I was rude and ignored her the second time. I politey told her that I had never been to Florida - or to the United States for that matter.

Most of the friends i have now are ones i met on-line, on the New York Rangers webboard. I have met almost all of them in person, which is quite an achievement since they are all scattered around the US, England, Finland and Sweden. I have been to New York twice to hang out with them, the last time this past July. One of my friends from England went down in July to celebrate her 21st birthday so i went down at the same time and we shared her hotel room. We spent the entire week hanging out and meeting our friends. Both experiences were great, they are some of the nicest people i know, really not that different from who they are on-line, except that some are a bit quieter...lol.

From NationStates I met Katganistan and Tactical Grace in real life.

I've met others whom I've known from other online forums, but I won't go into detail.

I've met quite a few from online. I met my best friend from online at GenCon in 1999. We're still best friends and chat a lot.

I haven't had any bad experiences meeting people.

No way! They could be a axe murderer!!! They'll come and chop me to bits, take my wallet and find where my house is, then go to it, chop my familiy to bits, my dog, my sister, my mom, my dad, my brother.. And then they'll chop my computer to bits, and then my tv to bits, and then my beloved porn books to bits. Then He'll go after my neighbours and chop them to bits, and to my friends and relatives, chopping them to bits.

Finally, the axe murderer would axe-murder the nation chopping it to bits.

I'm scared!

Yes, a couple of times actually. The first time I had just gone to the 21st birthday of some prat who was the son of some guy my father worked for. Met a guy, played pool, drank, sang karoke and went home. Started talking to a guy I knew from chat and he saw my pic and asked, "wern't you just at a 21st birthday party?" Small world. Eventually a largish ammount of us decided to meet up and spend a week on the gold coast, one guy asked to borrow some money on the second last day to save him going to an ATM. A bit later when in town he went to use the ATM, we never saw him again.

I met another guy online, he told me he worked at HMV and since I was going there the next day I told him I'd say 'hi.' Turns out I already knew him.

Met someone for sex from the internet once, was OK, not spectacular. Would like to do it again, my first 3-sum. I just hope I never meet someone from NS, otherwise they'll know I had a 3-sum! How embarassing! Yes, I know, I'm a prude.
