"DID WASHINGTON STATE DISENFRANCHISE TROOPS?"

Democrat Christine Gregoire was sworn in as governor of Washington this week even though it took three counts for her to secure a victory of only 129 votes over Republican Dino Rossi, and even though questions remain about whether the state gave troops overseas an adequate chance to vote. In a January 10 report, the Seattle Times revealed that the U.S. Justice Department had threatened to sue Washington State because it was so late in sending absentee ballots to military personnel overseas. Washington, in fact, was the last state to do so.

As opposed to Ohio trying to refuse registrations because they were printed on the wrong cardstock?

Please. This is more likely just another case of foot dragging, nothing more.

This may not be what you're talking about, but I know that in one of the more important elections there was a recount because things were suspect, and after each time the recount got more exact the Democrat won by a larger margin. Think of that what you will.

That's because if you look deeper and more carefully into elections in the US, you can finally begin to see past Republican election tampering and find out that the Democrats actually win most of the time.

Every state should do quadruple vote recounts. The results would astound you.

:headbang: Frankly, BOTH parties suck, but I'd rather a Democrat be in charge. As to the military being screwed, when my father was in the Army back in the 1930s, they couldn't vote, period. At least now they can, and while there MAY have been a deliberate ploy to bypass the troops, it would have come from the previous, Republican, governor and not Gregoire, so what's the point?

Everyone deserves to vote (even felons IMHO) and if this was a deliberate attempt to prevent those serving your country from exercising their democratic rights then it's shockingly ghastly and appalling! Otherwise it was just typical bloody studpid politicians as per normal.

Just wondering, was she a returning governor? Or was this someone else's blunder? Is the state governor responsible for sending out ballots, or is that the duty of some ellectoral commission? When were they sent out, how long would they take to arrive and when was the vote?

Sorry about all my questions.

they seriously should. since every statewide recount will give you a slightly different result (due to various sources of counting error that will never be totally gotten rid of, etc), it only makes sense to do multiple independent counts and take the average as the 'official' count. and that would force people to figure out all the mistakes that got missed on the first count and give more accurate results on that end too.

You are kidding, right? You don't do multiple counts? WTF? We do a MINIMUM of seven counts! I know, I was one of the people counting at the last election! Not only that but they are counted by diffrent people from diffrent departments at diffrent locations each time! We tally the results and if there is no consensus we count them again until there is NO error. These are important things, votes. That's why so many people died for them throughout history.

the one time i watched a vote count, i saw the crazy old people who run the precinct throw away perfectly good votes because they couldn't work the newfangled scantron machine properly.

I don't see why that would suprise you. Take a look at the states that voted heaviest for Kerry : California (Arnold Schwarzenegger), Illinois, New York (George Pataki), Maryland (Robert Ehrlich), Vermont (James H. Douglas), Massachusettes (Mitt Romney), Rhode Island (Don Carcieri), and Connecticut (M. Jodi Rell). Every one of those states with the exception of Illinois has a Republican governor.

Actually that policy was dropped.

And it was an old law, not a new one. It wasn't an attempt to disenfranchise people, just an attempt to standardize procedure. Now, it seems retarded in retrospect, but it was just an attempt to make stuff common across the board.

THROW BALLOT PAPERS AWAY???!!! ARE YOU MAD???!!! Even votes that are informal (that is to say those that are not valid because they are not filled in right) are still kept in order to ensure that the ammount of votes counted matched the number of voters. I hope for democracy's sake you and the scrutineers objected?

"Trying"

Have you taken a look at some of the legal codes for some of the states? There are some rather laughable old laws that would never be enforced today. That was one of them.

I'm just saying that there was no malicious intent in attempting to enforce the rule, just someone thinking "Hey! This will get efficiency up!"

In a January 10 report,

Hello, birthday.

Anyway, I'm glad I'm libertarian. At least I (usually) don't need a 'stop being on my side, you're making my side look stupid' sticked. So much Dems vs Repubs wank. I say we just have a battle to the death, Anne Coulter vs. Michael Moore. Winner takes earth.

Oh my god, I'm having nightmares tonight.
