Sure the a-bomb, opposable thumb and katana blades are all deadly weapons, but an anti-matter bomb would have to be the deadliest and most unstable weapon of all time. You see when anti-matter and matter meet, they anhilate each other releasing energy with 100% efficency (as opposed to uranium which is <10% efficent) a single grain could wipe out NY city in seconds

1. Biological Weapons. The US has stuff stored that can destroy practically all the human race if they ever got out.

2. Russian 200 megaton hydrogen warhead. This bitch can rip four US states if dropped right in a high altitude blast.

3. The knife, slipped between more ribs than anything in history. The oldest weapon and still used by armies today.

4. The firearm in all it's mutations, including the ICBM tipped with that 200 megaton Russian super bomb.

I'd have to say that hands down the most potentially lethal weapon made by man was the Anthrax biogenic products developed by the Soviets. Imagine having the capability to in one dispersal wipe out two thrids of the earth's human population. That's how lethal the Soviet-grade Anthrax was, and they were pumping out some 4,000 metric tons of it every year during the Cold War. It was so scary that the head of the program sabotaged it and fled to the US.

Second most potentially lethal I'd say was the Doomsday Device, a proposal submitted to Krushchev to fill an entire oil tanker with fissile material and detonate it as a contingency should Communism fall. It was so horrific even Krushchev dismissed the idea.

Scariest weapon ever developed: The Tsar Bomba, a 100 Mega-ton fusion bomb developed and tested by the Soviets in 1961. They dropped it over the Arctic circle and it blew out windows 500 miles away in Norway and Sweden! There's a picture of it here: http://nuclearweaponarchive.org/Russia/Tsarbmb.jpg

The biological and chemical weapons. Why?

The atomic bomb, while devastating, has no long term effects. Japan is up to speed after two atomic bombs within one generation.

Now a biological weapons can have much longer term effects. Spread a plague or blight into a nation's resources (water, food) and you've ruined pretty much everything targeted. Infect somebody with a new strain of plague and send them into a highly populated city to cause an epidemic, people who are infected but haven't experienced symptoms traveling from city to city and spread it further. Massive amounts of Kurds in Iraq died when anthrax was spread around them. Something on a larger scale could prove devastating as well.

Couple a things.

One, Military analyists will say that there isnt anything you can do with biological weapons that you cant do better with conventional/nuclear ones.

Two, you ever hear of Radioactive fallout?
You drop a nuke on something...you pretty much ruin the spot for the next 50 years.

Biological weapons.

The only time, and I mean the ONLY time that population growth of humanity has stopped has been during the black plague outbreak in Europe.

You have to consider how likely it is to happen when you consider how deadly a weapon is. Giant Nuclear weapons may have a higher potential for destruction, but in the long run, more deaths are going to be caused by epidemics, natural or man-made.

Man -

not just the mind - though the mind maybe the measure of the man ( and can you tell me who said that?)

not just the opposable thumb- though it helps us maintain our precarious edge over felines.

not just our inventiveness ( all you bio weapon and bomb supporters - just remember man invented them )

not just the pen - for a pen with out a thumb, and a mind and inventiveness is just a tube with dark goo in it

not compassion, for compassion is only part of the whole.

but us, man as a species, a whole, we are the deadliest weapon ever.

Yeah, just gamle ole is deadly in itself, but it would be a pleasureable death, that's why my socks are tossed in as the painful factor.

The problem is we still really don't know what anti matter is or why it is. Considering how disasterous the side-effects of a nuke are, I hate to think of what an antimatter bomb might do. It could set off a chain reaction that destroys the entire galaxy. But probably not. Still, better to be safe than to be phased out of spacetime. :p

I would say biological weapons...

There's so many ways to manipulate the genetic code of relatively simple viruses and bacteria that you could make weapons that are highly resistant, if not immune, to all conventional medical treatments.

Then of course, there's the ability to change the method of transmission (from fluid transmission to air transmission...etc.)

Finally...human travel makes it sickening to think about. Start with one person...he infects 3 people in London. One goes to New York, one to Calcutta, one to Tokyo. Each of those three infect three more...you get the idea...
