Generally changing up is one by one until the engine starts to make a low sputtering groan, then you've gone too high ... and if the engine is making a fast vroom-grrrr noise, then you're too low, and you need to change up.
Changing down gears: best to change down one by one, unless you need to stop fast in which case you can jump one gear (you can jump more, but I wouldn't like to see your engine ...) You don't need to be in first gear to stop! You can stop in second, provided that your clutch is in.
Oh, and don't EVER change from fifth to second on the motorway. I speak from personal experience (an accident! really!), a rather grumpy over-revved motor, a terrified mother, and overheating. *hides* Although I was on my L's at the time.

That reminds me of something. I'm not sure if it actually happened, but: An elderly man driving a Roller is about to park his car when a young hoon in a convertable steals his space. He than calls out "You have to be young and quick to that, pops." At which the driver of the Roller proceeds to drive over the top of the young mans car. OMg. Your RPM dials into red. Your going what 10 miles a galleon with that! Though you'll probably be driving madly fast.
Change your RPM around 3k, or 3.5k. Depends on how much your car can rev. If possible probably rev around half before red.

Hey, I'd like to know too - my tip saved you two hours of being yelled at...
Basically you can't drive a manual without practical instruction - it's bad for the car, for other people, and for you when someone crashes into your car because you stalled on the freeway. My advice is to get someone who has a manual (an old one :p) to take you for a few lessons with L-plates attached.
And I change up gear at 3 revs, getting towards 3.5 if I'm going uphill. Mostly I listen to the engine noise.

I'm guessing your trying to drive manual right?
I'll teach you. But I won't bear any consequences if your face ends up in the obituary section of the newspaper tomorrow. Make sure you try it in a empty parking lot.. Or somewhere safe that you can jam the breaks.. Make sure you have a friend who CAN drive next to you.
First.. You press the clutch.. Press it down to full.
Then you shift in the gear to Gear 1. While still pressing the clutch.. You lift it Slloooooooowwwllllyyyyy.. Don't release it immidiately or the engine would die. And you'll get a nice shock.
Make sure you lift the clutch to about 2/3's.. And the car would start to move abit. Then you press a little bit of the accelerator to move faster. and slowly take your feet off the clutch (This is the balancing part that everybody hates).
-------------------------------
To break (The important Part).
Press your Clutch down to full then hit the breaks.. So that the engine won't die. If you don't press the clutch. Your engine would die. (Quite fun, especially shock a friend who is drinking).
--------------------------------
There have fun. Don't drive too fast. And always test drive in a place you wouldn't kill someone. Make sure your friend who knows how to drive is in the car with you. So that he can pull your handbreak while you drift into the ditch. :D

My main problem with autos is that you can't change the gear when you know the engine noise sounds wrong. And they tend to change late and over-rev. And when you need to change down gear to go up a hill, you have to shove it into overdrive.

Australia has some odd laws. People who only learnt to drive on an auto should have to shove the L-plates back on for at least a month if they're switching to manual. It's a little dangerous to have a driver unfamiliar with the controls of the car, and the gears are pretty important - there could be a fast-track provisional licence system for drivers switching from autos to manuals.

The only way I can see Manual having more control, is the instant pickup or the shifting of gears when needed.
But Auto, you have both hands on the wheel.
Serendipity Prime
13-01-2005, 16:55
Manual you should have both hands on the wheel too- except for the second it takes you to shift. Though, honestly- I usually only drive with one hand, no matter what I'm driving.
Personally I like manual better because of the being able to choose the gears, you can end up with much more power going up hills, make it easier on your breaks going down- and being able to choose exactly when to shift. (Autos sometimes linger too long in their gears- prob transmission problems that nobody seems to want to deal with.)
Helennia
14-01-2005, 10:58
I also once thought that people in autos were safer drivers because they would have both hands on the wheel ... until the day I was in the car with a member of my netball team and she answered the phone with one hand while searching in her bag for her address book with the other. At least manual drivers know they need two hands, so they tend to keep at least one on the wheel.

Certainly true with an older/badly designed auto but most modern ones are probably as good as us in most situations. It is really only off-road or high performance where manual would have the edge. Don't get me wrong I do think that manual is more satisfying to drive but what I realised from ending up with an auto is that it is a matter of taste rather than actual difference.
