From Farewell to Arms by Hemingway

(About war in the mountains between Italians and Austrians in WW1)

"I know it is bad but we must finish it."
"It doesn't finish. There is no finish to war."
"Yes there is."
Passini shook his head.
"War is not won by victory. What if we take San Gabriele? What if we take Carso and Monfalcone and Trieste? Where are we then? Did you see all the far mountains to-day? Do you think we could take all them too? Only if the Austrians stop fighting. One side must stop fighting."

There can be a finish to nuclear war.

And we should finish it before it starts. Preemptive strike.

Only if everyone gets a marshmallow on a stick first, so we can all toast one at the end...

I'm going to need to get a lot of radiation as I like my marshmallows burnt. You know, where the outside is black and crispy and the inside is just straight goo, if it is glowing, so be it.

And we'll make sure we outlast the enemy so we can take their marshmallows too.

if bush started an honest war then i would understand why an honorable american ending would be suitable. but he set a terrible example and mislead many, therefore, i don't believe the soldiers should have to uphold there end of the bargain. no wonder bush won't speak with the canadian parliament, to many americans are onto "thou shalt not lie" commandment that he blatantly disregarded for dad. erg!

Most of the soldiers think they're doing the right thing, and they like Bush.
Why else would most of them vote for him?
