Please don't tell me that the Europeans, Asians, and Australians are also addicted to garbage like Survivor, Fear Factor, and The Real Gilligans Island.

Most non-Americans tend to view the whole thing as a large joke, in my experience.

I view it as a joke now and Im american. It's awful. Seriously, these shows are the epitome of evil. They're the anti-christ.

Unfortunately, yes, they are. In Australia; big brother, Australian (even American) idol, the bachelor, and fear factor are all very popular. We also have "desperately seeking sheila" and "Outback Jack". All garbage, I agree. Our tv's are clogged with it.

well being Australian I can tell you that we get a LOT of reality TV, about half of it is American, half Home-grown (or Aus versions of American Shows)

We get Survivour, The Apprentice, Richard Bransons Rebel Billionare, Fear Factor and a few others

we also get Australian Idol, Australian Survivour (which SUCKED), Australian Big Brother

and a whole slew of others, so channels are slowly reverting back to pre-reality TV (7 and 9) but channel Ten is going full steam ahead with a whole slew of shows

OK, we've established Australia is possibly even worse than the US. How about Europe and Asia? What about South America and Africa? The Middle East? Is it everywhere? :(

Okay, well, probably not Europeans. I know that some Canucks dig it, and apparently some Aussies, but probably not much more.

And nice to know more Americans hate it.

How about "Who Wants To Assasinate An Infedel?" its the latest Iraq TV craze! To compete all you have to do is grab a gun and go outside.

We in Australian seem to have a lot in common with Canada - good and bad.

South America has the craze as badly as the USA or OZ. Big Brother Brazil has been topping the ratings here for the last three years, and boy is it bad.

Well, I'm a Brit living in Thailand and working in China and Kazakhstan. I can tell you that there's NO reality TV shows, local grown or otherwise on local stations. There is however a lot of bewilderment on the subject of why these things are made by the round eyed barbarians.

Having said that, the latest pieces of dreck being promulgated on Star TV, the regions satelite carrier, apart from American Idol, are "My Big, Fat, Obnoxious Fiance" and "Manhunt". I think we also had "For Love or Money 4" before Xmas. Publically embaressing yourselves and doing the whole emotional hang out is not something that, generally speaking Asian's do.

On a similar subject, we may one day forgive the Japanese for thier actions in WW2, but I personally can't bring myself to ever forgive them for Karaoke Bars.

Big Brother and Idol were both invented in Europe, so I'd say that the reality TV situation is probably just as bad over there as it is in Australia and the US.

hopefully they will stop making them as ratings are starting to plummet on reality tv shows becuase they SUCK. maybe they will make real shows now with real actors that can act and are funny, unlike friends

All over the world.

IIRC, many of the shows popular in the US were imports from Europe.
American Idol came from Pop Idol. Survivor was thought up by a Brit, and began in Sweden. Big Brother was from the Netherlands.

The appear quite popular in Africa (http://www.time.com/time/europe/magazine/article/0,13005,901030623-458741,00.html).

And then we have Japan. :)
Japan had reality TV before it existed - Takeshi's Castle and Za Ganman (more on the second in a bit) were big in the 80's.

Most comedy/variety shows include reality show sketches.
Dempa Shonen has done several famous bits: Nasubi (http://www3.tky.3web.ne.jp/~edjacob/nasubi.html) and Saruganseki, a couple of guys who had to hitchhike around the world with 10,000 yen (about $100 US).

However, the modern reality shows are faked to some degree.

South East Asia, the people "we're" crazy over survivor, Fear Factor.
Survivor and Fear Factor is getting kinda old.

Never seen the Real Gilligans Island.

HOwever Apprentice here is big, and so is American Idol.

We recently had our own Malaysian Idol last year. Which the turnup wasn't as crazy as America, but nearly the whole population of Malaysia watched Malaysian Idol on tv.

*Heck, 2 years ago, the Australian Idol that won was a Malaysian born Australian*

The British started Idol didn't they? With Simon Cowell eventually going to the US because it pays more there.

I am American and rather like a few of the reality shows, but I agree that a lot of them are garbage and poorly put together. I am basing this often on the concept of the show and less on the output, since I frequently have only the concept to go off of (being stuck at work during prime time usually.) Survivor's still fun to watch, and the Amazing Race is still the best show of all, but I can't bear to watch shows like the Bachelor.

Only good thing that came from our American reality show?

That Simon guy from American Idol. He needs to be in some movies. Sign him up a contract. Perhaps then we can take attention away from reality tv and more toward our trashy movies.

Then again, Drawn Together....
