Pwned: Actual word or owned misspelled
is pwned an actual word that people use to mean owned or is it just people accidentaly pressing the p instead of o key
originally it was just misspelled - then people thought it was cool or something and did it on purpose ;/

Oh, hell yeah it's a word.
You pronounce the "w" in the same way as in "cwm."
"Pwned" rhymes with "tuned."
See also "Pwnage."

I say it's not a real word because then you would have to consider every word in the 'owned' dictionary to be a real word, I've heard over one-hundred variations of 'owned' and refuse to acknowledge all of them to be real words.

I've actually heard from a person that pwned is supposed to mean pawned, and not owned, although I find it highly unlikely, and it would still just be a leetspeak word of t0t4l n00bn355, just to be 13371y correct about this. ;)
So no, it is in no way a word, it's just 1337...
Which is actually pretty damn un1337, which is nothing like the aleets, except that they look somewhat the same.

Dictionaries are descriptive, not prescriptive.
That said, I don't think pwned has enough usage currently to be defined as a word in our language. But I suppose a linguist would be the one to determine that.

Oh, if you said so.
No frikkin' way. Why? Because pawned already has a meaning that's a lot more common and well understood than "to treat as a pawn."
Example: "I pawned my tv to buy booze."
OK, so you've got what we'll call a "theory." Is it right? Maybe. It's less plausible than what we'll call the "owned postulate," but we'll leave that alone for now. But is it right cause you say so? Get the hell out.

Now, I'm not taking sides on the actual argument here, but this is not a good defense for your side. The term pwned was begun by a bunch of computer geeks - do you really think they care what the more common and well understood meaning of any word is?

I mention it because the simplest explanation is usually the correct explanation. Not being able to go back and ask the architect of the original typo what he meant, I'm showing that the "Pawned theory" requires the invention of a new definition plus a typo, whereas the "Owned postulate" requires nothing more than the typo.

pwned could easily be a typo for pawned - it is simply missing a letter.
And the simplest explanation with computer geeks is usually the one that no one but them would ever think of.

This is true, but when you look at threads, how often--prior to the advent of "pwned"--did you see "owned" and how often did you see "pawned"?
Do I need to dredge up a zillion photos of retarded kids getting run over by offroad vehicles; of kitties in pint glasses; of Mickey piledriving some kid; of some dude aiming a .45 at a kitten; of some kid passing out with his face in a dog's ass; of a baby with a suction cup on his head; of a grandma drop kicking a baby; of Mr. T cold-cocking Godzilla; etc. etc. all emblazoned with the slogan "Owned!"
We know "owned" was in use prior to "pwned." I have never seen a single instance of "pawned" in similar context. Have you?

This is true, but when you look at threads, how often--prior to the advent of "pwned"--did you see "owned" and how often did you see "pawned"?I think this is the clincher right here. I was playing Counter-Strike a lot, on servers all over Europe, when the word "pwn" first became popular. I have never seen it used in a way that it wasn't interchangeable with "own" -- it is always used in the exact same way as the word "own" was used before "pwn" came into being.
In my lengthy online FPS career, continuing now with AA:Ops, I have never seen anyone use the word "pawn" (as a verb) in a manner that bears resemblance to the use of "own"/"pwn".

While I agreed with your objections before, now I think you're just hanging on.
Why is it that the images previously emblazoned "owned" are now occasionally emblazoned "pwned"?
I think "pwned" is a different word than "owned," but I think the change has less to do with shifting the meaning toward "pawned" (whatever that may mean) and more to do with emphasis and making the word more visibly part of gamer/1337 vernacular.
This "pawned" business is like claiming that "j00" is more than simply an alternate of "you," but instead derived from a typo of "m00" which has been redefined in 1337 speak to mean "that person." That fits your reasoning about geeks ignoring occam's razor.

That's incorrect. It began during a game of Counter-Strike when two clans were in a scrimage. One person on a side misspelled owned and said "I pwned you." and the other team began calling him stupid for misspelling owned. So to keep from losing face, the first person's teammates began using it all the time and it just caught on because people think they're cool.

No one here disagrees with pwned being 1337 speak, right? Ok, look up the origins of 1337 speak and there you will have your answer. It is an intentional misspelling of the word "owned" made by hackers and 1337 people everywhere on the net to prevent common searchs from finding their websites, only recently made popular.

"Leet
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
(Redirected from PWNED!)
An example of a Leet web browser (Text instead of GUI) in Leet language on a Leet language version of GoogleLeet (often also Leetspeak, L33t, 1337, or l337) from the phonetic form of the word "elite", is a cipher, or novel form of English spelling. It is characterized by the use of non-alphabet characters to stand for letters bearing a superficial resemblance, and by a number of spelling changes such as the substitution of "z" for final "s" and "x" for "(c)ks". Leetspeak is traditionally used on the Internet and other online communities, such as bulletin board systems. Leetspeak is commonly used by hackers, script kiddies, and gamers.
However, leetspeak is not popular amongst all hackers. It is thought that leetspeak has lost some of its eliteness after "everybody" started to use it. It is nonetheless a cultural phenomenon well-known amongst hackers and many other Internet users."

And I pronounced "powned"
http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=pwned&r=f
A corruption of the word "Owned." This originated in an online game called Warcraft, where a map designer misspelled "owned." When the computer beat a player, it was supposed to say, so-and-so "has been owned."
Instead, it said, so-and-so "has been pwned."
It basically means "to own" or to be dominated by an opponent or situation, especially by some god-like or computer-like force.

To prevent overlapping definitions, it should be pronounced pweened, because pooned can mean other things(poon is a type of tree, pooned is short for harpooned in cyberpunk skateboard courier slang), Pune is a city in India, pawned means to pawn something off, pow-ned can be confused for British currency or american weight(goddamit), and powned is adding an extra letter to owned, when the original was formed by replacing a letter.
