Arab Strap

Neo-Anarchists

Anybody ever heard of them?
I saw their name mentioned in conjunction with Nick Drake's somewhere, and I figured that since they were mentioned in conjunction with him and they ripped off the name of a Belle & Sebastian album, they'd be worth a check-out.

I'm really liking them, personally.

No, Belle and Sebastian name dropped them. Arab Strap formed in '95, The Boy With the Arab Strap came out in the late 90's. And any indie/folk band out of the UK is somehow linked to Nick Drake.

But they are pretty good.

Oh, I was confused, I thought Arab Strap was more recent than that...

I hadn't heard of either of them until early this year, so don't worry about it. If it hadn't been for my recent interest in Belle and Sebastian and allmusic.com I wouldn't have known that either.

Very good band... saw them many years ago (mid-late 90's?) in Leicester, supporting Prolapse, I believe.

If you LIKE Arab Strap - you might want to see if you can find some Prolapse as well - "Pointless Walks to Dismal Places" was a magnificent debut album.

Yeah, Arab Strap are cool, I saw them when they were in town a while ago. Also saw B&S recently too.

I have a couple of their tracks on an old Matador sampler and they seem pretty cool. The B & S name drop was hardly complimentary though...

Yeah I have. I've seen them live too. It was really cool since the venue was quite small and intimate. Also the supporting band was really good, they were called Eva and were fronted by Jenny Reeve, well worth looking for imo.

Also Grandaddy

Grandaddy's Sophtware Slump was one of the first Indie albums I ever bought, both that one and Sumday are very good albums. "Stray Dog and the Chocolate Shake" is fantastic, not to mention a fun song to name drop amongst your friends.

When was it released? 1999-2000? Or is it their most recent?

I didn't find the B&S name-drop to be that uncomplimentary considering the origin of the name, which suits the band. Ian Rankin name-dropped Arab Strap as well as "that drunk bloke from Falkirk always trying to get his end away" or something like that.

I've never had the good fortune of seeing them live, but they're certainly great.

Not sure, it says (C) 1997 on the back. It is their first album. Once you get that they also have an EP called 'The Broken Down Computer Collection' which is also good.
