What's wrong with "Queer Eye"

I think it is great that gay and lesbian people have become so mainstream that shows like “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy” (and Girl) cause little or no controversy. I support gay rights, including the right of gay people to marry and adopt children (neither of which is currently allowed in my state). I supported gay rights 20 years ago and continue to support gay rights today.

Here is my problem with the “Queer Eye” programs - they further perpetuate the idea that style is more important than substance. It was bad enough that women have been judged by looks alone for decades, centuries, millennia, but now men too are to be judged, not by the content of their character or what they have accomplished, but what they look like.

We are a society of shallow appearances that constantly reinforces the idea that clothes not only make the man, but are more important than the man. Shows like “Queer Eye” continue to perpetuate that fiction.

Not to sound homophobic, but most gay guys dress like like total fruitcakes. The problem with getting dressed by gay guys is you will look really really gay.
Seriously getting dressed as a guy is the easist thing in the world. Get some jeans a t-shirt and some sneakers, new balance is fine, so is nike. Whatever. There, you are dressed. End of story.

yeah i find it sad that equality doesnt mean judging women the same way we judge men... by their accomplishments. it means judging men the way we judge women... by the way they look

I think liberals have a moral dilemma about Queer Eye. On one hand, it forces homosexuality on society, which they like, but on the other hand, it perpetuates stereotypes, which they don't like.

As a liberal I would have to say you are 0 for 2. Nothing is forced (TV lives and dies by ratings), nor do I see it as sterotypical.

I'm just tired of a world in which we judge each other by the designer labels emblazened across our chests and what brand of bottled water we drink.

"You mean you're a 40yo cab driver from the Bronx and you don't use the right moistuiser? I'm shocked!!!" :D :p

Seriously, I don't know a single gay person who likes the show, it's only kept alive by straight people, ESPECIALLY the girls! *Shakes head in wonder* Personally I think it's just bad TV! I think that there would be a market for a decent show on male grooming, with practical advice (IE how to get rid of stubborn greese stains, clothing for diffrent body types, the correct application of cologne and how it's diffrent from aftershaves. What a balm in and how it can be used, getting rid of ingrown hair ect. I think the show is directed towards wemon, who will probably buy their partners this stuff they don't want and then buy some more when we don't use it!

As for "Queer as Folk," the UK versian was pretty good, the American clone is SO unrealistic!

Well, I mean, I don't really have a problem with that show being aired....

I just personally hate the show, it annoys me to hell...

"Queer as Folk" is one of my favorite shows. I liked the British version, but i like the U.S. version too.

As for "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy," i like it, though i don't watch it regularly, i usually forget or don't notice when it's on. I have seen it lots of times though. I don't think the straight guys look "gay" at all when they are dressed by the Fab Five, i think they usually end up looking good. People would be more likely to assume their girlfriends bought them the clothes than some gay guys did. The show does focus on appearances, but it doesn't focus on only that. It also focuses on helping these guys with their self esteem, introducing them to culture, just helping them see there are other options out there, even if they don't keep up with them after the show. In the end, it's a TV show, not one that is supposed to be taken too seriously. At least i personally don't believe it is.

Ah conspicuous consumption. My favorite windmill to tilt at. I live(d) in and around Silicon Valley, where it is still rampant. Pristine H2s make my brain bleed.

I think that Queer Eye, which is problematic for it's celebration of the superficial, is only emblimatic of the problem. One of the early indicators was when advertisers found out that they could sell to men the same way they sell to women with the magazine Maxim. Sure Details and GQ predate it and are more directly like Cosmo, they just forgot to add fart jokes.

I remember a New York magazine cover story with a picture of a man as "The Thinker" surrounded by beauty products. The headline? "Men, the New Women."

Queer Eye makes me sleep. Really. I've slept through a episode before while my sister was watching it.

It's like those shows where they make a ugly looking house beautiful. Except its making a man beautiful.

Queer Eye is a terrible television program!!!!! It just further perpetuates these stereotypes that most gay men don't even fit it. I only know one of out about 20 that fits the images portrayted by that show. That show should die and all copies be burned.

End of story.Straight guys are fucking vain. It's pathetic. Don't blow money on Nikes or any of that shit. Get a nice pair of Reeboks, and you won't have to buy shoes for another twenty years (dumbass). Besides, I don't have dicksucking money to blow on poorly made, unforgivably ugly, overpriced shoes. My dicksucking money is for college and rent.

To the OP, Queer Eye for the Straight Guy is funny. The food makes me drool, but the guys do not.

I think liberals have a moral dilemma about Queer Eye. On one hand, it forces homosexuality on society, which they like, but on the other hand, it perpetuates stereotypes, which they don't like. The liberals are also trying to take over your mind, turn your children gay, and convert everyone you know to Satan worship. Be afraid. Be very afraid, for I am watching you. I watch you while you masturbate. You are astonishingly poor at it (loser). Try the other hand. Try someone else's hand. Try the invisible hand.

As for my choice of bottled water: I like going backpacking in the mountains. Why? Take a guess. I always carry along a two liter bottle of Sun Drop. If I exhaust it, I just run some water from the stream though the water purification system and drink up. That's the closest I ever come to drinking bottled water. The rest of it's crap.
