...practically every thread degenerates into either a political or a religious discussion; almost nothing else is left. And it gets boring to see the same arguments replay time and again, over and over; it's ridiculous. It's why I try to create unique threads like the melee weapon thread or my alternate universe thread, yet no one pays attention to them. What I ask...is why must we just go over the same territory all the time? Why?

maybe because a melee weapon thread and an alternate universe thread are dumb ideas that dont deserve any real attention.
But you're actually right, I try to make a post on why the world needs Celine Dion to die, and it soon goes into a board about the merits of bombing Canada, and ends up as a " no, our healthcare is better" thread

Actually, that melee weapon thread got 24 pages to it. That's beside the point.

It's not that I find it annoying that people don't reply a lot; it's that people just don't seem to want to talk about anything else, and those that do argue politics are just repeating the same old tired arguments.
I think we should start a non-politics thread about something everyone likes that has no connection to politics. Is there such a thing? *runs off to library to find out. gets distracted when running by the krispy kreme store, stops, eats a donut, forgets what he was going to do, and goes home*

People may pop into a topic like "What is your favorite X," however there isn't going to be much debate. It's just a bunch of people listing "I like X because Y." Such a topic isn't really going to draw you in. You probably aren't going to want to read every response unless you are just bored.
Debate topics, especially those which people are very opinionated about, will draw a lot of people in, and hold them there for a long time.

What do you expect people to discuss? Sure there are other themes but they tend to be either technical or plain stupid. One possibility is to discuss preferences in media, or arts, or even sports (though this would quickly degenerate into USA vs Europe again). I think I might try starting a thread that discusses something else, say the best book you read last year, for example, with a poll asking about how many posts before it becomes a religious or political discussion.

The Melee weapons thread got loads of response, i liked it, dont be so hard on your threads.
Now lets discuss what Chick would say to this thread.
Joke, please don't anyone actually do so.

Ok let's debate who will win Pats vs. Colts. With Ty Law out, it will be difficult for sure, but Corey Dillon should be able to have a good day against a mediocre Indianapolis defense. Plus, it's in Gilette Stadium. Pats by a Vinatieri field goal!

Why are things like this?
Because when the apocalypse comes, there will be four groups of people left.
The ones assuring everyone that it's alright, and that extra arm isn't the end of the world.
The ones blaming it all on those ones.
The ones blaming it on everyone but them.
The ones content that it's all for the best, was pre-ordained, and who really needed that city anyway?

And every once in a while a thread like this turns up bemoaning these cycles.
Well at least you have tried to start new threads, generally people sulk and do nothing.

people are interested in politics and hold strong political opinions (also religious beliefs), thats why threads pandering to these shared interests get so much attention. hell i posted a religion/athiests thread the other day cos i wanted to express a passing thought and its got 7+ pages by now... and i haven't even looked at it since lol!
personally i enjoy arguement and debate (for fun - i hate it when things get personal and bitchy) so thats why i keep at the same arguements: its fun to argue with different people with different takes and opinions on the subject.

It is the fault of Christian Evangelists preaching too hard and Democrats having a failed candidate.

To be perfectly honest, more or less up till now I was interested in participating in those discussions. But now, they're boring.
And to the person who said you find my threads a welcome change from the norm...thank you.
