Virus/Spyware warning!
(i'm not sure where this needs to be, so please move it or leave it)
ATTENTION! All NS players, after recent internet identity thefts around the internet I am offering advice to combat spyware/virus.
First of all do not open unfamiliar e-mails, do not if possible go into chat rooms, and do not give out personal info (obviously) Also run your spyware, spam, and virus blockers to make sure they work.

My comp is getting a bit old anyway. Time to dump her and get a new one.

Here is another ... run *nix with firefox (though they are making java popups now ... that work on firefox they dont seem to effect the *nix version)
But seriously add to that list things like
*standard spyware scans (personal recomendations are spybot s&d and adaware combo)(though roumers that m$ bought out a malware removal company and are going to have a program out theirselfs ... I am sure I will hear more about it)(also is a good thing to run a scan every once and awhile in safe mode)
*Do NOT install any active X control's that you do not know
Sites traditionaly loaded with spyware. Warez, Explicit, GAMES (sleeper one no one pays attention to but online game sites are BAD)Not to mention things like AIM (when you have games enabled)Hell even WMP has alexis installed with it.
All and all there are lots of things that can be done to protect yourself ... and remember everyone makes mistakes and installs/goes something or somewhere they shouldent.

No offense to anyone here, but the only person I trust with my computer is my computer. ;)

No you trust everyone that has ever had a hand in designing everything from software to hardware in your computer to have done their job right.

Ad-aware, and Firefox. The only two things you need to protect yourself from all spyware/adware. As for viruses...purchase a ten dollar CD of Norton 2003 and upgrade it to the latest version, and you're covered completely. Simple, really, and it only costs you 12 dollars at the most.

Yeah, but who the hell chose all that? ;)

Compleately ... you kidding? (not saying that they are not one of the best ... I prefer them but compleatly is a joke)

True that ;) I prefer to eliminate most of the software by making changes and such (an advantage on *nix) but still somewhat depenent on others and hardware ... compleatly dependent for me

Ever since I started using them I've had not a single problem. At all. I'd say that's completely alright.

I use AntiVir (http://www.free-av.com). It's free, and works quite well (found a dozen Trojans right in the first run...)
Aside from that, anyone who uses Internet Explorer gets what is coming to them. Use Opera, Firefox, Safari, Netscape or whatever the hell you want, but run from IE. (Of course, this here is typed through the Internet Explorer at work. If I had a choice, I certainly wouldn't use IE).

Well personally I have dealt with 6 network aware worms that managed to elude them for a week+ (we use a combination of Norton and Symantec corporate (in a process of a switchover to Symantec corporate))
I have had to personally submit 2 viruses that they missed completely.
Really just because you have not had an issue while using them does not mean 100% (I have 100’s of examples of where things went wrong with them) along with bad code and horrible installer support (along without a check for previous versions)
Actually I have found that AVG catches stuff that Norton doesn’t sometimes :D ( in general slower then Norton by an hr or two but … they are free cant exactly compete with the Symantec powerhouse)

Touche; nothing's perfect. It works for me at any rate, and I haven't really had any problems, so I'm not going to complain.

True … and I prefer them honestly all my windows machines run them … BUT nothing is 100% you have been lucky (and probably sitting behind a router that either does NAT or includes a true firewall)

Actually yes, that's true; I've got every defense possible at the moment up on this computer. And thus far, it's worked.

Ok good...
Remember 2 software firewalls = BAD
Hardware & software = Good (well at least not bad ... not really nessisary either unless you are woried about internal viruses ... specialy on large networks)

Eh, not a problem; I'm on a wireless LAN at home with software and hardware firewalls on every computer connected. I'm trying to get everyone else to go Firefox but they've so far been...unopen to my suggestions. Reminds me of me before I tried it.

Me too (with firefox) though I used opera for awhile and once I found out that that firefox has mouse gestures (extention)(like opera) I was hooked
