Oh my god... I had the weirdest experience. You know the tingly feeling you get when part of your body falls asleep or wakes up while you're conscious? Well I had that feeling over my entire body, but not constant like normal, it came in waves that moved from the tips of my limbs to my head and ended up hurting my teeth, and as it built to a crescendo I couldn't move because my entire body was asleep but my mind was awake. It was really scary actually, because I have an incredible fear of paralysis and it took a huge force of will to move my arm to wake up, and even then it just sort of flopped over and freaked my sister out.

Now, you see that's why I dislike zenarchists, they take the IOM to be a personal enlightenment rather than a transformation of the world. It shouldn't just be a single lightbulb going on for a single ego, but instead the simultaneous relaization of the kingdom of heaven on Earth and the taking of that kingdom by storm. Or something. Fnord.

The only distinction between the two philosophies, at least in my understanding, is that in one each person carries around their own universe, so a transformation of the universe can take the form of a transformation of a single ego. No one says that it's impossible for a simultaneous destruction of the barrier between heaven and earth for all people, but doing it for single individuals at a time is much easier.

What's more, I did it that way in the RP because it would be a bit stupid to end the world in the middle of a story arc.

The old idios kosmos/koinos kosmos distinction?

In this area I am more ignorant than knowledgable. The majority of what I know is gleaned from symbolic or just generally confusing works, or I made it up so that it logically fits. If you mean the map/territory distinction, then yes, that's what I'm talking about, the fact that each person exists in the universe, but lives in their mind exclusively.

That wasn't what stopped me, the fact that a bunch of people would have gotten annoyed at me and I wouldn't have had as much fun is what stopped me.

No, one is rather the road of solipsism, while the other is the belief that there does in fact exist a real world (call it the noumena for want of anything else) which exists independently of perception. The first sees the transformation of the individual as the transformtion of the cosmos, while the other requires a transformation of the cosmos in order to transform the multiple individuals within it.

I disagree with your interpretation. I believe in both an existential universe and an internal percieved universe. The symbols we use to describe the universe we observe define the universe we use to make our decisions about how to act in the universe with which we interact. In other words, there is a filter between the mind and the universe, and on one side exists a universe which can impinge on the senses of all people, so changes are understood by everyone, while on the other side is a universe which is unique to the person who believes in it and changes in which only affect that one person. So transforming the universe on the personal side of the filter is as effective as transforming the universe on the existential side, but only for that single individual.

Well, I wasn't really claiming that you were a solipsist, instead explaining the idios kosmos and koine kosmos distinction.

Instead, it seems like you are arguing for the immanetization of the eschaton as (if you'll let me get all Blakean for a moment) being

To see a world in a grain of sand,
And a heaven in a wild flower,
Hold infinity in the palm of your hand,
And eternity in an hour.

While I'm holding out for...

I will not cease from mental fight,
Nor shall my sword sleep in my hand,
Till we have built Jerusalem,
In England's green and pleasant land.

Ok, I'm just saying I disagree with the idea that one is solipsist while the other is not. In my understanding both are solipsist in some ways and not in others, and in neither case does it matter since a belief in solipsism does not negate any other potential cosmological understanding, it just puts a mind as the outer limit of the universe instead of something else.

That seems to go beyond solipsism though, which is traditionally the belief that only the self exists (or in some cases that the existence of the rest of the world is dependent upon the continued existence of the self).

I file that under "I can't know, and it doesn't matter either way." If the universe exists only in my mind can it be said not to exist at all? No. Even if I am all that exists physically, I still live within a "real" universe inside my mind. In fact, I believe that everyone does live within a universe inside their minds, and that those universes die with those minds, but that we are all reflections of a greater reality that encompasses ourselves.

Yes of course, but like I say, "it doesn't matter" because we can't know, and even if we could it wouldn't change anything about the way we live.
