Nothing has ever or will ever prevent me from reaching my dreams. But then again, your dreams may (and almost certainly will) change over time.
When we were five, we all wanted to be firemen or astronauts or some such. As we got older we re-evaluated based on new options and opportunites, and better self-knowledge. Life is a constant series of choices where you edit your priorities.
For example: I could earn more money to realize more material desires - or I could spend more time with my wife and kids.
I choose the family. I still glance over at the Porsche dealership in apreciation as I drive by, but I'm driving by with the kids in the car for a family outing that means more to me than a machine. Does that mean that I gave up a dream? Or does it mean that my dreams changed?
For me it's the latter. Some people given the choice would prioritize differently, spend less time with those they love in order to devote themselves to their work in order to realize that dream. I found that when looked at closely that there were new dreams that mattered more to me instead.
Of course, if you are going to peg your dream as: "To have more money than Gates", then you will likely fail and you can decide to blame things for getting in the way if you like. But realistic dreams are acheivable, and if you attain them quickly then you can always upgrade to new ones.

As a child my dream was to be a doctor, but once i got older it was no longer what i wanted. Plus, i am horrible at math and science...lol. Since i was 17, my dream has been to have a career as a writer. Not be famous or wealthy necessarily, just be able to do it for a living. That dream is slowly coming true. I work freelance for my local weekly paper and have worked freelance for my local daily paper in the past. I have self published two books of poetry and had other poems published in various anthologies. Just recently a company wrote a script for a short film based on one of my poems. They will go into production in three weeks.
My ultimate dream is for there to be world peace and equality for all, but mankind is still working on that.

Well, if your posts on here are any indication, you're not lacking in intellect. Just keep in mind that there's more than one way to skin a cat ... if you want to go to college badly enough, there are ways to accomplish that.
In addition, please don't underestimate yourself. One of the prime rules of goal-setting is to set your goals high enough to make you stretch and really work to achieve them, but not so high that they discourage you. I suggest you look at careers and talk with people who already work in those careers in which you have an interest. Find out what they did to get to where they are, and if being where they are now is truly where you want to be.
I have several resources to which you can refer if you like.

I've had many dreams, accomplished some, failed at others, and some have yet to be.There have only been two things that have ever hinder me and which hinder me less after each experience.
1) Ambition, or more specifically the lack of it. If you have an idea that even just "sounds neat," get up and do it. Most people think of cool ideas and say "Yeah, that sure would be cool." Then sit down and thing about something else. But if you have a good idea, speak up and execute it.
2) Other people, or more specifically the fear of their criticism. A few days I learned something about myself, which I will get to. You see, I like being social. And sometimes it comes naturally to me. But sometimes I just can't seem to say anything to anybody. I call these "quiet spells." However I recently realized the difference in my thinking when I'm in quiet spells as opposed to being social. When I'm in a quiet spell, its because I'm worried too much about what others might want to do or what others might be thinking. Remember, those are mights. I prooved to myself that just dispensing of that predisposition at any given time allows me to be social again. You see I was having a quiet spell on friday, when I remembered the recent realization. So I just stopped caring what other people might think when I talked to them, and it worked.
So yeah I rambled a bit about lessons learned. But 2 points, be ambitious, and don't worry about what other people think.

What prevented my dreams? My dumb ass...
I think so far most of my dreams have been achieved.
As far as academics: I got into the school I wanted, got into the program I wanted, and if all goes as planned I'll graduate in 2 years, start my own practice in 5 years or so.
I still want a family (someday in the distant future) so I have yet to achieve all my dreams I suppose.....
But as far as misc. dreams, I think I've done well for myself :)
And no one has really prevented me from anything, only pushed me forward.

The one thing that sort of prevents me from doing much right now is lack of a high-school diploma...
Straight F's all through. I couldn't even show up regularly. I need to go back and get a degree, but first I need to get my sleep problems and mental problems helped. And that's what I'm currently busy grappling with.
Unfortunately, my lack of circadian rhythm has me in a stranglehold right now. No way to show up at night classes at the moment...
At the moment, my goal is simply to earn enough money to support myself with a modicum of comfort, and to hopefully settle down with someone who loves me when that time comes. It would be nice to have a job in one of my fields of interest, but I can't quite see it happening at the moment.
The one good thing I have to say about my current situation is that nobody can really take much else away from me right now. I guess I can't do much but go up from here.
EDIT: Oh yeah, and I'm *finally* not physically alone. Which sorta feels like electroshock therapy after thinking I have no value to anyone for so long.

The major obstacle to me achieving my dreams is that my amazing ideas inevitably get shot down in flames. I'll just be sitting minding my own business and suddenly I think something along the lines of "Wouldn't it be great if you could get little miniature zen gardens that you could keep on a desk or something". I'll look into materials, how I would make it, how much it would cost, etc. Then one day, I walk past the local new age shop and see stacks of miniature zen gardens in the window. LOADS OF THEM. I hate it when somebody gets to an idea before me.
I'm not sure how coherent that was.

Your circadian rythum problem is a new one on me. Have you contacted anyone involved in research in this area? Do an online search to see if there's anyone near you to whom you can talk, or just contact the recognized experts. Ask them if there are any treatment programs for this sort of problem.
