..Super Smash Bros. for N64, I decided today, is one good game. But... which character is the best? After you have voted please state why. (The poll might take some time, so don't worry)...

As for me, I believe Captain Falcon is probably the best, but my favorite character is Ness. Psi magnet....

If you would like to try this game on your computer, you can go here:

http://dohgames.com/

Now the first question people always give me is "Is this legal?" Yes, it's perfectly legal. I can't show you exactly how to download, but I will be as general as possible: Download the N64 emulator first, then the Super Smash Bros. Rom...

(edit) Sorry, seems I have forgotten Kirby by mistake, you'll just have to post...

Oh yeah, it's great; my N64 is sitting behind me. I'm best with Luigi, followed by Pikachu, Captain Falcon, and Kirby. Then again, anyone can be good with Kirby; he's pretty much the god mod character.

I'm best off with Pikachu, only because he was all I used in SSB64, until I became more of a Nintendo freak. Nowadays, I use Chu with Link, and sometimes Mario (same goes for SSBM)

Samus kicks absolute arse. Long ranged moves, that just get better at point blank. Not many combos but the individual moves do damage, and she has great pushing moves. Also, you practically need to knock Samus right out of the map to stand a chance of getting her out. Used correctly she can get back in the map from basically anywhere. And she's quick enough to get out the way of anything.

Samus > you all.

What's your highest on endless melee with her?

For me:

Link - 327

DK - 2436 - used only ground slap so I don't really consider this legit.

I can't remember. I should say that I don't play very well as Samus at multi-man melees, but she is completely unbeatable at duels. It's probably just over one hundred or something, but I tend to play multiplayer games against one person.

I don't remember SSB64, but in SSBM, Marth and Roy are pretty awesome, followed by Ganondorf and Captain Falcon.

The most useless characters are Pichu, Dr. Mario, Jigglypuff, Young Link...did I mention Jigglypuff?

On the subject of Marth and Roy, they are the two most fun characters to duel with. At first, Marth seems to have the advantage, but with skill and time, slowly it revolves to Roy. It's just when you start to master counter and all of their moves, they are fantastically good fun to play as. Still can't beat Samus though in a duel, though they can probably hammer her in a four player match.

Of you poor deluded fools... Jigglypuff, bad? Pichu, bad? Marth and Roy best for dueling? (Admittedly, a lot of fun, and you can watch strategies evolve and counterevolve over time, which insteresting, but still, Fox and Sheik own Marth and Roy for duels) Samus, best character?

You've all got it wrong... now if only there was a way to prove it...

Oh well, suffice it to say that there isn't a single character in the game that is entirely bad, except maybe Mew Two, although he can be very powerful when used correctly, just not as good as any of the other characters used correctly.

Let's not forget Jigglypuff's down+b, which is remarkably easy to hit with some practice, and which kills anything with around 50% damage or more in one hit.

Pichu is faster and does more damage than Pikachu, so to balance they made him damage himself and made him the lightest character in the game, but his double agility up+b goes so far that it hardly matters, I rarely die with less than 250% damage as Pichu, higher than almost any other character.

Faster and with a better set of moves.

Yes, you need to go Jigglypuff and use the down b move. It's very easy when you do that. The hard part is killing mewtwo as Jigglypuff when you never usually play as that character.

It's really easy with Jigglypuff, it takes two hits from the down+b to kill gigabowser each time, then fighting Mewtwo and Ganadorf is much easier.

Let's clear some of this up, downloading the game is illegal. :)
If you own the game, you are entitled to a backup copy, therefore it is only legal for YOU to download it. And anyway, you can only keep the game on your computer for 24 hours. If caught breaking the rules, you will be fined the original price of the game and the ROM will be taken off your computer.

Thing is, no one goes after the people who ROM games except for the latest consoles, like Gamecube, PS2, X-Box, and GBA. Otherwise, since they're not going to make any real money off their older console games, they ignore those, usually.

Jigglypuff is AMAZING in SSB. Can you say 'Jump above opponent, down+b, repeat'?

Down-B, when above an opponent (or whatever the sleep move is), is almost instantly fatal. It does INSANE damage. Jigglypuff was my best character because he was SO CHEAP. Luigi was also amazing with his up-B -- positioned correctly it only did a bit less damage than the down-b of Jigglypuff.

My favorite all-around character, though, was Ness, because he could hit you from ANYWHERE. If you were behind him, Down-A. If you drop down on him, up-A. If you're in front of him, FORWARD A GG NO RE KTHNXBYE.

<3 the bat.

And he had the best throws in the game. No doubt about it.

Unimpressive. Sheik is so incredibly broken in SSBM it's unfair... and I LIKE using Sheik. You have to acknowledge that when using him/her.

EDIT: Pichu is terrible in SSBM? Clearly you've never seen me play as him. I got good with Pichu PRECISELY because everyone says he sucks. Hell, I like him MORE than Pikachu.

Yeah, not that well balanced, unlike the rest of the game. Sheik is incredible, and since you can switch back to Zelda to finish, or to play against certain opposing characters, it's just way too good.

Samus. In both the old and in SSBM.

On a fighting scale... well wait, Sheik? You people crazy? Sheik and his/her twin sister/brother are nothing, man, nothing. Reflecting shots back at Samus? Chuckle chuckle, I don't shoot that way and when I do, I make sure to be ready to evade. The ball mode bit is an incredibly fun mode of movement shifting, and when used unpredictably and for evasion it's really, not even very fair IMO.

Only Link really comes close to the ultimate superiority of Samus, though of course all characters can be used effectively. No character is so ultimately, universally (for all players) powerful that it totally dominates otherwise we'd all agree on which one that was, wouldn't we?

As for class and style, well Samus is the chick in power armor. The rest are all freaks.

Zelda and Sheik aren't good because of the reflecting move, they're good because Zelda is extremely powerful and Sheik is extremely fast. Pit two players of equal skill against each other, one using Zelda and the other using Samus and Zelda will win 9 out of 10 times.

Sheik does very little damage and has only one or two good finishing moves, but because she is so fast it doesn't matter, she can hit you ten times as fast as a normal character could hit five, so she does as much damage as anyone else, but keeps the other person out of control for the whole time, then you can either switch to Zelda to finish with a smash, or you can do the forward+A in the air to kill them off the side.

The up+A in the air is a decent finisher... come to think of it, just about all her air attacks are decent, but the forward+a is the best. I have a few hundred hours of play time, probably about 50 with Sheik alone, so yes, I've tried most everything. There is no doubt that Sheik is unbalanced, and I never really use Zelda, but the fact that Sheik is so good without using the Zelda half at all just shows that she's even further unbalanced.

Actually, the explaination of why Samus won for you is probably that even with players of the same skills as each other certain characters are good based on the skill of all players. In other words, beginning players with Marth can beat experienced players with other characters, but beginners with Luigi won't do as well. So Luigi might seem worse than Marth if you test every character against every other character using beginners, but if you test with experts Luigi will beat Marth much more often. Samus is another of those easy beginning characters, strong moves, medium-fast, a lot of power, not too complicated move set, nice and easy, and very powerful in the hands of a beginning crowd, but nothing compared to the really good characters (Marth {he's always good}, Fox, Peach, Luigi, Yoshi, Captain Falcon, Young Link, The Ice Climbers {speaking of power}, Ness, Zelda/Sheik, Pichu, and Jigglypuff... that's a lot of characters, but they're all so good).

If thats true, then that also serves as an explanation for why you think the characters of Marth, Fox, Peach, Luigi, Yoshi etc etc are better than Samus. I mean who says Samus is a "beginning character?" Or that I was playing with a "beginning crowd?" Samus isn't and I wasn't.

I'm not saying you aren't good at the game, I'm saying that if you look at the best players around you won't find anyone playing as Samus, she's just not fast or powerful enough, though she is very good. Player dynamics are very important. The play style of each person as well as their ability, and their relationship outside of the game all factor into how they interact within the game. I don't think there is any way to make an objective comparison of any two characters except to put them into the hands of many players and see how they work out in the long run.

Exactly. It really isnt based on the basic attacks of the character; its about the different strategies that you deploy with that character. There are infinite strategies and its impossible to see which one is the best. Ordinarily, people would say that Ganondorf is a slow character, but in my hands, I surprise people with how quick I can deploy his attacks.

Ness can take a beating in the new game, and does a lot of damage with simple attacks like his dash and his air attacks, so you usually only have to get off one good baseball bat attack to kill.
